Fishin’ Frenzy
By Blueprint Gaming
The first of Blueprint Gaming’s popular fishing themed slots series, Fishin’ Frenzy paved the way for more than 15 slots to follow in its footsteps. It's that good it's also been made into an offline version found in real life casinos and bingo halls. The original game is low volatility and played on 5 reels and 4 rows, with 10 fixed paylines. With a 96.12% RTP, and a minimum bet of just £0.10 this slot is a great place for players on a budget, or those new to slots games. The fun free spins feature with a clever cash collect fisherman promises to throw in a few extra payouts of up to 500x every now and then.
Did You Know? The original Fishin' Frenzy slot was created by Australian outfit, ReelTime Gaming, who licensed the format to Blueprint Gaming and Merkur. Surely they can't have foreseen how popular the brand would be a decade or more later.

Theme and Design
It's A Little Dated, But Fishin' Frenzy Has Retained It's Charm
The design of Fishin’ Frenzy might divide people. It’s not as flashy as some of the more modern 3D slots (remember this was released back in 2014). However, its cartoon charm, colourful symbols, and under-the-sea theme are probably what most people are looking for from a fishing slot. The interface is user-friendly first and foremost, making it a great choice for beginners.
The soundtrack is excellent too. You’ll hear waves crashing, seagulls squawking and the quiet tick of the reels spinning. Sure, it’s not super flashy, but it’s a classic fishing theme that has plenty of fans and the format has been repeated copied many times over by Blueprint’s rivals.
RTP and Variance
This slot has an RTP of 96.12% which is just a smidge onto the more generous side in terms of other slots. It combines this with low volatility, meaning you probably won’t be hitting massive wins all too often, but you also won’t have to weather any dry spells.
The 96.12% RTP is the highest of any games in the Fishin' Frenzy slots series.
Overall, it’s a great choice for players who are a little more cautious with their budget, wanting to enjoy plenty of gaming on a tighter bankroll.
Maximum Win
For a low volatility slot, a top payout of 5,000x your stake really isn’t bad! Fishin’ Frenzy manages to balance a wallet-friendly gaming experience with a pretty generous max win. While there’s no progressive jackpot or any dizzyingly high winnings on offer, we can’t fault it here.
Symbols and Paytable
Played on 5 reels and 4 rows, this slot has 10 paylines. You make wins by matching at least 3 symbols along a payline from leftmost to right. It’s a great slot to start out with as making wins is super simple.
There are 10 pay symbols, plus a wild and a scatter symbol that we’ll come on to shortly. The low value symbols are card symbols which pay from 5x your stake for 3, up to 100x your stake for 6. The premium symbols are the life ring, fishing tackle box, reel, and pelican paying from 20x your stake for 3, up to 2,000x your stake for 5.
The wild symbol is the fisherman, who substitutes for any pay symbol to help make a win. He also pays out 1x, 10x, 50x or 500x if 2, 3, 4 or 5 appear on a payline. That’s an unusually high return from a Wild symbol.
Features and Gameplay
While this game keeps it pretty simple on the whole, there are some bonus features to explore. These definitely bring a new dimension to the game and enable you to make much bigger wins.
Wilds
In the base game, the fisherman symbol acts as a wild and can be substituted for any symbols, excluding the scatter, to make a win.
Scatter Symbols
The fishing boat is the scatter symbol (it even says Scatter on the hull). If you land three or more of these then the free spins feature is triggered as follows:
- 3 Scatters: 10 free spins
- 4 Scatters: 15 free spins
- 5 Scatters: 20 free spins
Free Spins
The free spins feature is the highlight of the game. During your spins, any fisherman that you land on the reels will catch any of the fish on the reels, awarding you their corresponding prize. If you just land the fish without a fisherman then you don’t get the win. This cash collect feature fish carry values of 2x, 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x or 50x - a pretty exciting day’s fishing by all accounts.
The Cash Collect feature in Fishin Frenzy free spins round has been the inspiration for many fishing slots since, most notably Pragmatic Play's Big Bass games. Find out more in our Big Bass Bonanza slots guide.
Gamble Feature
The final feature is known as the gamble feature. If you make any win then you can choose to gamble your winnings on a double or nothing bet. It can double your winnings, but you might lose everything. So, sometimes it pays to exercise a little caution.
Final Verdict
It’s impossible to knock this classic. Sure, the graphics aren’t as shiny as some of the newer slot games and there might not be an absolutely mammoth jackpot to chase, but it’s got everything you’d want from a slot. The basic pay table is surprisingly generous and the simple 10 ways to win makes this the perfect slot for beginners, or just those who love a simple, straightforward slot game.
The fishing theme is great. It runs through the background, the reels, and even the soundtrack. In fact, the fishing theme is so excellent it paved the way for more than dozen spin off games. Overall, if you’re on a tighter budget, or enjoy a simple fishing slot, you can’t go far wrong with Fishin’ Frenzy.
Testing Notes
Test spins and results analysis by Mark Wadie on 03.07.24
Results from 200 spins with real money on Fishin Frenzy at PlayFrank.
- Stake Size: £0.1
- Start balance: £19
- End balance: £10.05
- Win Rate: 16.5% (33 winning spins in 200)
- Biggest Win: 65x
- Free Spins Round: 1
There is no denying the charm of this game. The graphics and sound affects take you straight to the arcade hall on a seaside pier and its refreshing to play a slot with such a simple format. This game is sometimes described as medium variance, though we categorised it as low variance ourselves. In truth it sits somewhere between and that showed in this test where the win rate was surprisingly low at just 16.5% of spins. That said, the balance rose and fell a few times and the wins were good when they did drop thanks to the generous paytable, and despite the long wait for the bonus feature to trigger, the game never felt boring.
The all-important free spins round dropped just once in 200 spins and delivered a 65x win including 3 cash collects in 10 free spins. This feature might have been ripped off and repeated in many other fishing slots since, but it is as compelling as ever. I watched some big value fish drop in a few times only to come up short with no fishermen to collect them. Maybe next time.
