About This Slot

Hotline 2 from NetEnt will be a welcome arrival for fans of its high-octane predecessor. The game is inspired by Miami Vice, the TV drama series of glamour and crime with its stylish cops and villains, car chases, iconic music and sunset locations. The main characters in the game are detectives Quinn and Riviera, who are investigating a jewellery heist masterminded by the elegant jewel thief, Kitty Weiss.

RTP, Variance and Top Payout

The classic 5-reel layout has a strong resemblance to the previous Hotline slot but it’s had a thrilling 2020 revamp. You’ll find Expanding Wilds on reels 2, 3 and 4, which can substitute for all symbols except the Scatter. If you hit a Wild on a Hotline, it expands to take over the whole reel and you’re treated to a video of a sports car purring along Miami bridge.

Interestingly, this game has a variable RTP, which can alter due to the set up with the middle three reels – the Hotline zone. Each of these Hotline reels can be activated individually with all 3 Hotlines bringing the RTP to a pretty good 96.05%. Plus, the minimum bet is just 0.10, making the game suitable for all bank rolls.

Symbols and Graphics

The symbols in Hotline 2 include detectives Quinn and Riviera, jewel thief Kitty Weiss, and a range of colourful jewelled-encrusted necklaces. Kitty is the highest paying symbol, rewarding you with up to 2.66x your bet for 5 of a kind. The other high paying symbols are the detectives and a third cop, while the sparkling jewellery symbols award the lower payouts. The full paytable is visible from the menu, which can be accessed by clicking in the bottom left corner of the game screen.

Fans of the 2018 original will notice the potential payouts in Hotline 2 are much lower than in its predecessor, where 5 Kitties could net you 200x your bet. Although it might be disappointing to find less generosity from Net Ent this time around, Hotline 2 makes up for this with its revamped Hotline feature with Bonus Buy option.

Gameplay and Features

Hotline Feature

Hotline 2 makes up for the shortfall in payouts from its symbol matches by boosting the winning chances in other areas. The exciting Hotline feature is activated at random, turning the game to night-time mode and triggering Stacked Wilds on the central reels, which increases your chances of hitting a bigger win. You can also use the Bonus Buys to active the Hotlines individually.

Bonus Buy

It’s possible to activate the Hotlines at will using the Bonus Buy feature. At the base bet, only reel 3 is a Hotline, but when you activate the Double Bet bonus buy, reels 3 and 4 are both Hotlines and the bet is doubled. For even more Hotline action, use the Triple Bet bonus buy to turn reels 2, 3 and 4 into Hotlines and triple your bet.

Scatters

The Scatters are exotic pink flamingos, which can trigger 7 free spins if you land 3 on the reels together.

Free spins

When the 7 free spins trigger, you’ll get more height added to the reels if you also hit the Wild symbols. These launch 2 additional free spins for even more potential payouts. The number of paylines also increases during free spins from 243 to 1944, giving massive potential to clock up some hotter rewards.

Wilds

The Wild symbols appear on reels 2, 3 and 4 in both the main game and the Free Spins round. They can expand across the entire reel if they appear on a Hotline and add extra rows to the reels if they appear during the Free Spins round. When the Wild stacks up on the reels, players are treated to a car chase video for full Miami Vice effect.

Our Verdict

Hotline 2 is a thrilling continuation of the Miami crime story and players who love the 80s theme are in for a treat. Although the basic payouts aren’t as high as with Hotline, the Expanding Wilds and the potentially lucrative free spins with increased rows and paylines help to make up for it. The animations and sound track create an involving atmosphere, while the medium volatility, good RTP and low minimum bet make this suitable for all pockets. Slots fans are sure to enjoy their return visit to the sun-baked streets of Miami this August!
