Theme and Design
A Ghostly Tale For a Dark Winter's Evening
If you want to try a slot with a dark side but find the adult horror movie stylings of NLC’s latest production, Possessed, to be a bit too much for you then I recommend checking this game out instead. There is certainly a spooky element to the design with a sepia landscaped background, haunted house and ghostly lady, but it’s altogether more old-fashioned. There is a fortune-telling element woven in with spell books and crystal balls and the atmosphere is complete with an eerie soundtrack to accompany your spins. It’s more mystical that terrifying. A good slot for a cosy winter evening.
RTP and Variance
Madame of Mystic Manor runs at an RTP of 96.25% which is about average for an online slot game. It has a medium-high variance so it will be quite a volatile slot with an unpredictable payout distribution with plenty of wilds, free spins and multipliers to help it go off every now and then.
Maximum Win
The maximum win in Madame of Mystic Manor is 5,000x. That is quite low for a medium-high variance slot, but still means you can win £1,500 with a minimum 30p bet. If you are looking for better potential, check out our list of the highest max win games including slots with max wins over 100,000x.
Symbols and Paytable
This is a 5-reel slot with 4 rows per reel and 30 paylines. To trigger a win you will need to land 3 or more identical symbols across a reel from left to right, starting at the left most reel.
There are 9 pay symbols in the paytable. The win values do not come out as whole numbers as the stake set up is a little unusual. Stakes range from 30p per spin up to £45 per spin, and the wins are as follows:
Low value symbols are the cards, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. These are valued at from 0.23x for 3 Jacks up to 1.16x for 5 Aces. The premiums are the candlestick, the hourglass, the crystal ball and the spell book. These are valued at from 0.5x for 3 candlesticks up to 15x for 5 spell books.
There is a Wild, and it appears on reels 1 to 4 as a ghostly woman carrying a candlestick. She will substitute for any pay symbols to complete pay lines. And she also pays out 1x for 3 on a line or 2x for 4 on a line.
Features and Gameplay
Hot Zones and Returning Wilds
In both base game and free spins rounds, hot zones are central to the gameplay. Here is how they work.
When a wild symbol lands anywhere it will create a hot zone around itself. Hot zones remain in play until an Oracle symbol lands to activate them in the Returning Wilds feature. The Oracle symbol is represented by the lady with the crystal ball and she only appears on reel 5. When she appears, all symbols that are in hot zones become wilds.
And that’s not all. If another wild lands in a hot zone as it is waiting to be activated, then this adds a multiplier value to the hot zone, which will be applied to the wild that appears there when the Oracle drops onto reel 5.
What does this all mean?! Effectively, you are building towards a moment when all hot zones will be filled with wilds and wild multipliers. Potentially, the longer you wait for the Oracle to appear, the more hot zones may form on the reels and the greater your payout will be.
Free Spins With Persistent Hot Zones
There are two free spins rounds in the game. To trigger the first you will need to land 3 or more scatter symbols, represented by the eye on the triangle. Scatters only land on reels 2, 3 and 4.
To start, you get 7 spins. During the round, hot zones are persistent. That means, if they are activated by the Oracle, after the wild transformations and payouts, they don’t disappear, but instead remain in place for the next Oracle to land when the process repeats.
This is powerful because it means you can keep adding more hot zones and building bigger multipliers as more wilds land in them. The round ends when you run out of spins, but it can be extended as each time the Oracle lands another spin is awarded.
Super Free Spins With Sticky Wilds
The second free spins round is called Super Free Spins. This is triggered by landing 3 or more scatters when the Oracle also lands on reel 5.
In this enhanced feature, there are no hot zones. Instead, all wilds are sticky when they land and carry a multiplier. For each subsequent spin, when the Oracle lands then the value of those multipliers increases by 1x.
Final Verdict
This is a fun game for those who enjoy features like Wild Frames and Sticky Wilds. The theme is fun and well executed, and the maths felt nicely balanced with a reasonable hit rate and regular feature triggers to keep you engaged. The free spins round also looks well configured to trigger some huge wins thanks to the persistent hot zones, making this a good game for high variance enthusiasts.
Testing Notes
I played 250 spins on Madame of Mystic Manor on Blueprint Gaming’s test server prior to release to test the game. This is what happened.
- Stake Size: $1
- Start balance: $1,000
- End balance: $931.88
- Hit Rate: 21.6% (54 winning spins in 250)
- Biggest Win: 47.36x
- Free Spins Round: 2
Madame of Mystic Manor is a fun, if simple, game. The hit rate was a little on the low side at 21.6% (roughly 1 win in 5 spins) but it was still reasonable. One or two times I saw 7 or 8 dead spins go by but most of the time there was something going on, from a small win to another hot zone lighting up.
In the base game you should just be looking at building up as many hot zones as you can because the more in play when the Oracle drops, the better. I never had more than 4 in play at one time, and that only produced a 5x win, but you can see the potential. The Oracle landed 8 times over my 250 spins (3.2%) so don’t expect her to be dropping every time a hot zone appears. However, on 6 of those occasions a win was triggered, so she almost always triggers a win.
Free spins triggered twice and produced by far the best moment in the game, a 47.36x win. At that point I had 8 hot zones, one with a 3x multiplier. It’s a modest win but demonstrates where the big payouts are going to come from.
I can’t fault the game. It has a nice way of building wins through the Hot Zones and Returning Wilds and the theme is fun with good sounds too. Anyone who can build 10+ hot zones before the Oracle drops is going to do well!
