About Octopus Treasure

October Treasure is a deep sea online slot game from Play n Go that arrived in the UK in October 2022. It joins a long list of deep sea monster and deep sea fishing slots that includes Beat the Beast Kraken’s Lair, Atlantean Gigarise and Mega Don. There is an easy parallel between fishing in the deep for treaures and spinning the reels hoping to catch a big win, so its no surprise that slot providers enjoy creating a game or two around this theme.

Octopus Treasure is set in the very depths of the ocean, and the star of the show, the huge octopus actually rarely shows his face. Instead he sits behind the reels, tentacles grabbing at symbols and triggering features at various times. The animations are fun and the bubbling backdrop with battered coral and shipwreck detritus makes for pleasant scenery.

The game itself is a middle of the road affair – medium variance and a few fun but not particularly original features to drive your payouts including Wilds and Symbol upgrades.

What We Liked

  • Nice graphics and fun animations
  • FOUR modifiers in the base game
  • Treasure Spins can be infinite
  • Nice 2-part bonus feature
  • Well-balanced, medium volatility gamep

What We Didn't like

  • Low payouts and mid range maths

RTP and Variance 8/10

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

The RTP of Octopus Treasure is 96.25%. This is very average for a video slot but how does this compare to other Play n Go games? Here are a few you could try with a better RTP figure (all these games are available at the casinos listed on this page):

  • Rage to Riches: 97.12%
  • Xmas Joker: 96.98%
  • Wildhound Derby: 96.93%
  • Mystery Joker 6,000: 96.91%
  • Sticky Joker: 96.74%

The game plays at a medium variance which means a relatively even distribution of wins. This maths model is similar to games like Gates of Troy or Count Jokula from the same provider.

The top win is 5,000x which is good for a medium variance game. If you want bigger potential from Play n Go you would have to try a more volatile slot like one of these:

Paytable 8/10

The action takes place here on a reel set carved out of gnarly old shipwreck pieces lashed together with the bobbing Octopus in the background. The symbols themselves are not particularly high in value but with the help of multipliers can still push out some big wins.

Here are the highlights of the paytable:

  • There are 5 reels, 3 rows and 20 fixed paylines in play at all times. These are fixed, there is no expansion feature.
  • Wins are triggered by landing 3 or more identical symbols on the reels from left to right.
  • The low payers are the card suits, diamonds, hearts, spades and clubs. Spades have the highest value at 2x for five on a line.
  • The premiums are the pieces of treasure including ceramic pots, bags of gold, silver vases and daggers and crowns. The crowns pay out the most at 3.5x for five on a line.
  • Wilds are also important – they sub in for all others to form wins and pay out 5x for five on a line

NOTE:  There are no free spins in this game but there are re-spins which are triggered by landing a KEY symbol on reel 3.

Gameplay & Features 8/10

So those are the numbers, but how are you going to win big in Octopus Treasure? Here’s how …

Keys Are CRUCIAL to landing any payout …

When one lands on reel 3, then the Octopus reaches round, grabs it and unlocks a chest that sits above the reels. This brings up one of FOUR modiers:

The 4 Modifiers in the game are:

  • Wild Coins – watch the coins drift to the bottom of the screen. When they land, you must pick one to reveal a symbol. ALL instances of that symbol visible on the reels are now turned wild to create wins.
  • Treasure Grab Bonus – the octopus himself picks symbols to award instant cash prizes on.
  • Wild Reels – choose from the pots displayed on the screen to turn reels wild. You can turn more than one reel wild in this way!
  • Gold Pile – the octopus randomly transforms some symbols into higher paying symbols from the paytable.

PLUS … it doesn’t stop there. Sometimes a random multiplier of 2x, 3x, 5x or 10x gets applied to your win.

No Free Spins BUT Re-Spins Offer the Best Chance of Hitting 5,000x

To trigger re-spins you’ll need to land  3 oyster scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5.

When this happens, then the reel set is modified so ONLY KEYS appear. During your re-spins every key that lands is collected and the total at the end of the round tells you how many Treasure Spins you get. During this feature, you are GUARANTEED to play with one of the modifiers – wilds, treasure grab, wild reels or gold pile – so your wins are significantly boosted.

And … any key that lands during Treasure Spins get you an extra spin in the feature! And there is no limit to how many times this can happen.

Our Verdict 7.8/10

Octopus Treasure is a fun slot. Here are some of the things we like about it:

With four modifiers in the base game there is plenty of variety to keep things interesting. With a balanced medium variance the wins are also fairly regular so it doesn’t get boring. We also loved the re-spins feature because it has two stages – you have a chance to grab as many keys as you can before unlocking the Treasure Spins where you are rewarded for your collection. And, we loved that you could keep re-triggering the Treasure Spins by collecting more keys. This extended the gameplay in the bonus round to give us more chance of winning.

However, if you prefer the free spins mechanic to re-spins then this won’t be the game for you. And if you like bigger potential then you should try one of the other Play n Go slots we mention on this page.

But for those who like deep sea slots and medium variance with regular pay outs, Octopus Treasure is a fun game. So, enjoy!
