Phoenix Paradise
By Thunderkick
Phoenix Paradise is a high variance mythological slot from Thunderkick set in a jungle paradise. The game plays on a 5 reel and 3 row grid with 15 paylines. The gameplay is very simple. When more than one of the game's Phoenix Wilds combine they invoke multipliers of up to 32x applied to any win line they complete. These Wilds can also randomly convert into Walking Wilds that come with re-spins.
There are also elusive Phoenix Eggs that trigger free spins when three are collected in the cups at the foot of the reels. The bonus round has the best potential because every Wild becomes a Walking Wild and more spins can be triggered by landing more scatters. The top payout is 10,000x and spins start from 10p.

Theme and Design
Thunderkick’s reputation is build on high production values. You can see that in all of their games – Phoenix Paradise is no exception. Set against the backdrop of an idyllic forest scene in 3d with lush green vegetation, streaks of sunlight and ancient stone statues of birds of paradise, it’s a great looking game. That quality is carried through into the reel set, studded with ruby stones and populated by inticately drawn symbols including a wide-eyed adventurer.
The soundtrack is upbeat too, with jungle drums and flutes creating a joyful atmosphere. In short it’s a great game to lose yourself in for a few minutes, as immersive as any of Thunderkick’s best slots including ones like Birds on a Wire of Pink Elephants.
RTP and Variance
Phoenix Paradise is a slot with multiple RTP settings. Thunderkick are producing more and more games like this. It means that the RTP setting will be chosen by the casino you play at. It could be any one of four: 96.13%, 94.12%, 92.14% or 90.11%. Obviously, you want to play at the highest RTP when you can.
We checked five popular UK slot sites to see which they had chosen. This is what we found:
- Casumo (independent) – 94.12% RTP
- BacanaPlay (Skill on Net) – 92.14% RTP
- Barz Casino (White Hat Gaming) – 94.12% RTP
- All British Casino (L and L Europe) – 94.2% RTP
- Dream Vegas (White Hat Gaming) – 94.12% RTP
It may be hard to find a slot site that runs this game at the optimum RTP level. We recommend Casumo from our list that has the game at 94.12%, a little under average but not far off the 96% mark.
Phoenix Paradise is a high variance slot, perhaps not as volatile as other Thunderkick games like Fruit Warp or Pink Elephants, but unpredictable nonetheless. If you like high volatility, check out our list of the best high variance slots too.
Maximum Win
The top win here is 10,000x which isn’t bad at all and about mid-range for Thunderkick. For comparison, Beat the Beast Mighty Sphinx comes in at 4,444x and Divine Lotus at 8,709x. They do also have some higher potential games like Gods of Rock (20,000x) and Baron Bloodmore (25,000x).
Symbols and Paytable
This is a 5 reel slot game with 3 rows and 15 fixed paylines. You’ll need to land 3 or more matching symbols on a payline from left to right to score a win.
The paytable shows some really good value at the premium end, and all the symbols are beautifully drawn, in keeping with the rest of the game. Low paying symbols are the cards from 9 through to Ace. At the Ace level, five on a payline earns you 7.5x your bet. Meanwhile, Premiums are represented by the Phoenix Dagger, the Blue Urn, the Red Tiara and the female Adventurer. The Adventurer is top payer with a value of 10x, 15x or 75x for 3, 4 or 5 on a payline.
As well as the standard symbols there are also THREE specials that are important to the gameplay. These are the Phoenix Wild which is your basic wild to sub in for all others, the Walking Wild Fiery Phoenix, that will activate the Walking Wilds feature, and the Eggs Bonus Scatter, which will activate the free spins round.
Features and Gameplay
This is not a game packed with features. But that makes it easy to follow. Your attention at all time should be on the grid to see if Phoenix Wilds land, because they have special powers, and the elusive Egg Scatters which will trigger free spins.
Wilds Combine To Create Multipliers Of Up To 32x
First of all, the Phoenix Wild can land at any time and on ANY reel.
He will always sub for all other symbols to complete winlines but he also brings a multiplier to the table. And the more Wilds in the payline, the higher the multiplier is, as follows:
- 1 Wild – 2x multiplier
- 2 Wilds - 4 x multiplier
- 3 Wilds - 8 x multiplier
- 4 Wilds - 16 x multiplier
- 5 Wilds - 32 x multiplier
Rarely – twice in 200 spins in testing in fact – a Phoenix Wild on the reels will start flaming in a Mystery Wild Activation feature. This signals a re-spin and Phoenix Wilds will all walk one reel to the left before another re-spins is activated. This continues until ALL wilds have dropped off the final reel.
Why is this good? Because it means you get more chances to win from each wild and more spins for your money. Plus, if more Wilds land during re-spins, the feature extends further. Like I say though, it was a very rare thing indeed and didn’t produce much!
In Free Spins, All Wilds Are Now Walking Wilds
If you want to land that 10,000x top payout then you are going to need to enter the free spins round in Phoenix Pardise. And that is no easy task! You have to collect 3 Phoenix eggs which land in a little cup at the foot of the reels when they appear.
If you are lucky enough to land 3 you will get 8 free spins, plus another 4 if you land 3 more scatters during the round.
The game is very weighted towards payouts in this feature because now every Wild that lands is a Walking Wild so the chances of scoring re-spins and wins are higher.
Final Verdict
Phoenix Paradise is really nice immersive slot with great sound and visuals and a very pleasant place to spend some time. It does feel a little bit like Thunderkick by the numbers at times though - the theme and artwork are very similar to previous releases, and the features and gameplay, with Wilds with payline multipliers of up to 32x have been done many times over too. Personally, I prefer their early work like Birds on a Wire, Flame Busters and Fruit Warp, and I think they are at their best when being more creative with the gameplay. However, if you like the style and you want a tough, high variance slot that looks like it might produce some special moments in the free spins round then this could be a great choice for you.
Testing Notes
I played 200 spins on Phoenix Paradise for real money at Bacana Play to test the game for this review. These are the numbers from that session:
- Stake Size: £0.10
- Start balance: £12.97
- End balance: £1.22
- Biggest Win: 15x
- Free Spins rounds: 0
- Session Time: 13 minutes 51 seconds
For such a pleasant looking slot, Phoenix Paradise delivered a brutal experience with zero free spins rounds and just two Mystery Wild Activations. That left me feeling that not much had really gone on during my 13 minutes 51 seconds on this game. So, much as you would expect from a high variance game. Frustratingly, 4 or 5 times two Eggs landed but the third was elusive, and the first Mystery Wild produced just a 3x win, and the second produced a blank! Not my day.
