Triple Royal Gold, released in October 2022, is something of a departure for the studio Thunderkick who normally specialise in strange and quirky slots like Pink Elephants and Birds on a Wire. This time around they bring us a simple, 3×3 one arm bandit style slot machine instead that would look at home in the surroundings of a traditional Vegas casino floor. The gameplay is equally simple with a cascading wins mechanic at its heart and a progressive free spins round with the chance to build multipliers up to 27x.

Thunderkick have gone for the same art deco, retro styling that Red Tiger have in their Great Gold game that is also a simple 3 reeler. In this case both the machine and the backdrop shimmers with greens and golds that invoke a sense of wealth and money whilst the frame around the reels is studded with golden lights. It’s a gamblers dream – just you and three reels without any of the complicated features and themes that modern slots providers love.

That said there is still room for some state of the art 3-d animations in the form of a spinning diamond wild. And the sounds are superb too – just listen to the click and whirring with each spin of the reels, and the upbeat jazz soundtrack that switches pace in time with whats happening on the reels.

Thunderkick do a great job of invoking the time period and if you love the 30s and the idea of travelling back to the Vegas of that era, this slot is for you!

Triple Royal Gold is a simple 3 reel and 3 row slot. All you need to do to trigger wins is land two identical symbols on adjacent reels from left to right regardless of which row they appear on. That gives you 29 win ways on every spin.

There are just FIVE paying symbols – a horseshoe, a bell, a set of bars, a lucky 7 and a crown. They are valued at 1x for 3 horseshoes, 1.5x for 3 bells,  2x for 3 bars and 2.5x for 3 7s. The crown is unique because it also pays 1x for just 2 instances and 5x for 3 instances.

There is also a Diamond Wild that substitutes for all other symbols to complete paylines. But it has NO value beyond that.

And finally, there are letters that spell out the word B-O-N-U-S. These can be collected to unlock the free spins round.

Playing Triple Royal Gold, your task is simple. In the base game it’s a matter of landing 2, or usually 3, identical symbols on adjacent reels. Winning is aided by the popular Cascading Wins mechanic, not normally used in three reel slots but welcome here. After a win, winning symbols are removed and new ones drop in to replace them. If more wins are created, then the process repeats.

In this case there is added excitement because you are also trying to collect the letters that spell out the word B-O-N-U-S. Every spin in the cascade sequence is a chance to land another letter and get closer. Once you have spelt the word then the free spins round opens up. But keep in mind that the letters only count when they are appear as THREE on a winline.

Into the free spins round and there is now a progressive element to the game. You start with 8 spins. Each time a winline is formed with one of the five symbols on it, the symbol lights up under the reels. If you can light up all five then you get 2 more spins and your multiplier increases by 1x, up to a maximum of 27x.

It’s a simple but effective slots mechanic where your hope is to just hit a lucky run where you keep scoring wins, boosting your free spins further and adding to your multiplier. If you keep doing so you can win up to the maximum 5,000x.

In testing we finally unlocked the free spins round right at the end of our session, producing a £7.95 win from our 10p bet that you can see in the screenshot on this page. It was a tough one to crack and one of those games that teases a lot and looks like it might never deliver. Finally, thankfully it did! Still miles short of the full potential, but that is high variance gaming for you!
