A little under a year after they blew the online slot world apart with their astonishing Bonanza Megaways™, still one of the most popular games at any UK slot site you choose to play at, Big Time Gaming brought us White Rabbit Megaways™. This 2017 release takes the Alice in Wonderland fairy tale, the inspiration for so many cultural events from movies to comic books and songs, and brings it to life on the slot reels with stunning artwork, animations and sounds.

The game is set in a magical forest, complete with giant sleeping caterpillar and giant mushrooms all under sunlit trees with rich colors everywhere you look. There are 5 reels and varying rows of symbols thanks to the Megaways – these start at 2 and potentially grow up to 7 rows with paylines increasing in proportion, giving up to 16,807 ways to win in the main game and up to 248,832 in the bonus game were 12 rows are possible.

As you will see when we review this game in more detail, what is most astonishing about White Rabbit is that Big Time Gaming could follow up Bonanza with a game that is even better! Let’s dig in to find out more.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 9

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

The RTP of White Rabbit is a particularly excellent 97.24%, which is well over average for an online slot. The RTP can in fact increase even further up to 97.77% with the Feature Drop option available outside the UK. Meanwhile, the 20p minimum bet and medium volatility rating make this highly playable, more than Bonanza in fact whose super high variance can be off putting to those who are more risk-averse than your average high volatility fanatic.

The 13,000x stake top payout was very high at the time, though it has since been superseded by slots with much higher potential like games from No Limit City. The biggest wins are achievable with the max Megaways™ and by utilising the bonus Wilds with Multipliers in the free spins round.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 9

The symbols in White Rabbit Megaways include high cards, precious gems and the Queen of Hearts. Characters from the fairy tale also appear when the high cards land as larger symbols, including the Cheshire Cat. You’ll also find the White Rabbit on the reels as the Scatter symbol.

Simply find 3 symbols on consecutive reels to receive a payout, regardless of which row they are on.  The Queen of Hearts herself is unique because she only needs 2 symbols to pay out a reward, with up to 25x your bet available for 6 of a kind.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 10

Megaways™

Let’s start with the Megaways™ mechanic for those who don’t know it. At the time of release this was of course a relatively new idea but now of course there are 100s of Megaways™ slots on the market, and likely many more on the way in the coming years. This expanding reels mechanic means you have up to a potential 16,807 ways to win in the main game where up to 7 rows can be displayed on any line, and an incredible 248,832 ways to win during the Free Spins bonus game where up to 12 rows are available.

The reason there are so many paylines is because wins are triggered when the identical icons land on adjacent reels left to right, regardless of their position.

2 Wilds

There are 2 Wild symbols in White Rabbit.

The regular Wild that lands on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5 can stand in for any other symbol in the game to create more potential wins. There is also a Bonus Wild, which can turn up at any time and offer 2x or 3x Multipliers. The caterpillar it the trigger for these Bonus Wilds which appear when he blows smoke rings from his position under the reel set.

Free Spins

Things really start to get interesting when the Free Spins round kicks in, and just like all other Megaways™ games, this is where you can start to stack up some very impressive payouts. You need to land 3 White Rabbit Scatters to trigger 15 Free Spins. When this happens, the backdrop changes to show the reels falling down the famous rabbit hole from the story.

You’ll start with 5 or 7 rows on each reel. Now, when cupcake icons land this will expand the rows by 1 each time. Once any reel hits a maximum of 12 rows, another 3 to 12 Free Spins are added to your total. And when all six reels are showing 12 rows, then your win ways reach the maximum total of 248,832!

And … when a reel is showing 12 rows, it becomes a Queen’s Reel which means it has enhanced potential with more Queen symbols and Wilds available.

Feature Drop

Outside the UK you have the option of buying your way into the Free Spins round for a cost of 100x stake. This can be preferable to experiencing that frustrating wait for the right number of scatters to land. You can also collect Feature Drop symbols during the main game, which work to lower the price of the Feature Drop option by 0.2x up to 2x.

The Final Verdict

Like a great band who debut with the perfect album, Big Time Gaming faced a tough challenge in following-up on their legendary Bonanza Slot (alright, it wasn’t their first, but you get the picture). Buy boy did they deliver. For many, Bonanza is still the greatest, but you can’t overlook the quality of White Rabbit that delivers an abundance of thrills and spills in both the base game and bonus rounds.

This slot is gorgeously designed, utilising all the best parts of the Alice in Wonderland narrative and characters. The classic fairy tale is brought to life with charisma and invention and visuals and sounds that are wonderfully quirky and perfectly crafted. The popular Megaways feature gives loads of ways to win in both the main game and the bonus game, while the regular appearance of the Bonus Wild Multiplier adds a dose of random fun to the proceedings.

In terms of maths of course the unusually high RTP of 97.24% is excellent and setting the variance to a medium level opens up the game to more players than other highly volatile titles from the BTG back catalogue. From experience we can say that it is not as hard to unlock the free spins here as it is in Bonanza, and the cumulative effects of free spins with Bonus Wilds is still a wonderful joyride, though it lacks the intensity of Bonanza’s Avalanche Reels and multiplier combination that has sparked so many epic win sequences.

Perhaps the only improvement visually could be to add more characters from the story as regular symbols, including the ‘drink me’ potion, which would be fun. But we’re only nit-picking. No question, for pretty much any slots fan this game is worth spinning for the atmosphere and visuals alone – Big Time Gaming have done a brilliant job with the design and mechanics, making it a near perfect slot.
