A Case of Riches
By Play n Go
A Case of Riches from Play n Go is inspired by the super-sleuth, Sherlock Holmes, made famous in the Victorian novels by Arthur Conan Doyle. It is a simple slot played out on a basic 3 reel and 3 row game engine with a nicely balanced medium variance. The base game includes Wilds with up to 3x multipliers and Re-Spins. The feature round utilises a board game to unlock free spins with modifiers including symbol upgrades and guaranteed wilds. The maximum win is 5,000x and spins start at 10p.

Theme and Design
A Case of Riches has a very distinctive atmosphere, invoking the 20th century London streets of Sherlock Holmes, with a backdrop of a dark alleyway surrounded by looming buildings and a night sky just visible through the gaps. The look is completed by an ornate reel set, with a kind of Victorian styling, and iconic sleuthing symbols on the paytable. The soundtrack wouldn’t sound out of place in an Agatha Christie movie, whilst our Holmes-like hero wears a typical deer hunter hat and smokes the classic pipe. It’s fun but won’t appeal to all slots fans out there.
RTP and Variance
Riddle Reels has 5 available RTP settings – 96.22%, 94.75%, 91.51%, 87.72% or 84.47%. Whilst most slot sites will run the game at the higher settings – usually 96.22% or 94.75% - some will choose lower. I recommend you check the RTP on loading up the game before you spin to make sure you get value for money. For this review I checked the RTP at several sites we use to test games and found it to be running at 96.22% at Barz Casino from White Hat Gaming.
Riddle Reels is also a medium variance slot so it will provide a fairly even distribution of wins, and that is certainly how it played out in testing.
Maximum Win
The maximum payout for Riddle Reels is 5,000x. That is not bad for a mid variance game. If you want a higher payout you could try Raging Rex 2 (30,000x) or any in our list of slots with the highest maximum wins.
Symbols and Paytable
Riddle Reels plays on a 3 reel and 3 row grid with 9 paylines. Whilst the paytable values don’t look that big, keep in mind that you have plenty of multipliers to help increase their value.
There are 8 symbols in total. The low paying ones are the weapons represented by a noose, a hammer, a dagger and a pistol. They are valued at from 0.4x for 3 nooses up to 1x for 3 pistols. The premiums are the characters: a woman in purple, a man in green, a lady with golden hair, and a man with a cane. These are valued at from 2x for 3 of the woman in purple up to 12x for 3 of the man with the cane.
Look out for the Wilds as well – there are 2 of these – the regular wild, and multiplier wilds (2x and 3x). They can substitute for all the other pay symbols to complete paylines. And of course, if a multiplier wild is included, its multiplier value is applied to the total win. If you’re lucky enough to hit more than one multiplier wild, the value is combined for even bigger wins with a maximum 27x multiplier available (3x3x3).
Features and Gameplay
Wilds and Re-Spins make up the features in the base game but where Riddle Reels gets really interesting is in the bonus round where your luck and sleuthing skills combine to help you unlock a potentially huge Mega Spin!
Base Game Re-spins
Re-spins are triggered by landing TWO magnifying glass scatters in the base game. The scatters are held in place while the other reel spins. If you hit another scatter, you’ll trigger the Case of Riches bonus feature, otherwise a separate Mystery Feature will begin. Here, the 2 locked scatters transform into ONE random symbol from the paytable then duplicate on their reels. Depending on what is on the third reel, this may trigger further wins.
Case of Riches Bonus Sleuthing Game – Bring Your Magnifying Glass!
The main event is the Case of Riches bonus. This is activated by hitting 3 scatters in the base game or during a re-spin.
The aim here is to solve a murder mystery! The round is set up like a board game with 14 spaces on it, you roll the dice and Sherlock Holmes moves around the board to solve clues. You get four rolls of the dice and each clue awards a free spin with a modifier.
The modifiers available are:
- All low payer weapons transform into the same weapon type
- All premium suspects transform into the same suspect type
- One reel is GUARANTEED to be wild
- Or … no modifier is awarded
After each clue is solved your free spin plays out with the modifier. Also, there is a clue meter with 4 places on it at top right of the screen. If you fill the clue meter from your trip round the board during your 4 spins then you trigger a Mega Spin.
If you don’t fill up the clue meter you get another crack at it with ONE MORE SPIN. Here, you spin a wheel and if the pointer lands in the right area, then a Mega Spin is granted. If not, then you return to the base game.
Mega Spin Feature
The Mega Spin feature gives you 1 free spin with either a wild reel or multiplier wild reel, while the other reels are filled with a suspect or weapon. This increases your chances of scoring a big win.
Final Verdict
A Case of Riches is an involving slot with an immersive mystery theme. Fans of murder mysteries, Sherlock Holmes and Cluedo will love it, as the atmosphere is compelling with a fun narrative and well-crafted character and weapon symbols. The simple design with just 3 reels and rows makes this slot easy to play whilst in the base game the multiplier wilds have the chance to sky-rocket your payouts, particularly if you can land more than one on a payline.
However, my favourite part is the multi-layered bonus game, which is complex to keep interest levels high, while increasing your winning opportunities. As you earn free spins you’ll be looking to get a good modifier to go with them each time. My favourite is the Guaranteed Wild Reel or the Suspect symbol transform. If you can turn all instances of premiums into the same premium then you have a better chance of scoring bigger wins. For the Mega Spin the best configuration is probably Multiplier Wild Reels where the other reels is ALL premium suspects.
As with all slots its about the right combinations. Earn a good one in the bonus round and you could be pushing towards that top 5,000x win.
Testing Notes
I played 200 spins on Riddle Riches for free at Casumo Casino to test the game and this is what happened.
- Stake Size: £1
- Start balance: £25,000
- End balance: £24,975.20
- Biggest Win: 60x
- Bonus Round: 1
- Session Time: 25 minutes 43 seconds
Initially A Case or Riches came across more like a high variance game with little or no features triggered in the first 100 spins. However, in the second half of the session it did improve with 6 re-spins and one bonus round. The bonus feels quite complex at first with its mix of clues, dice rolls and free spins. But once you’ve played a few dice rolls it falls into place. My win was just 14.8x but the feature took 3 or 4 minutes to play out so it gave good value for money in that respect. The best win I got over 200 spins was a solid 60x from a re-spin that you can see in the screen shot below.
