About Cat Wilde in the Eclipse of the Sun God

Fans of Swedish developer, Play n Go’s infamous high variance slot game, Book of Dead, will be excited to see that protagonist, Rich Wilde’s now equally daring sister is back for another adventure in Ancient lands in Eclipse of the Sun God slot game. Once more we venture into Aztec culture, in a smart, 5 reel slot set-up with neat graphics, a rich and compelling theme and intense gameplay.

Cat Wilde brought some serious high variance action our way in last year’s Doom of Dead game, and this one looks to be just as treacherous. So be ready for a rough ride. The payouts start when you land 3 identical symbols on a payline from left to right and can reach as high as 5,000x in the feature rounds …. if you get that far!

What We Liked

  • Classic Cascading Wins slot game
  • Sumptuous graphics
  • 5,000x top win at medium variance
  • 70x multipliers in free spins round
  • Stars Cat Wilde!

What We Didn't like

  • Variance could be higher

RTP and Variance 8/10

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

Like most Play n Go slots, Eclipse of the Sun God has a pretty decent RTP of 96.22%, which sits in the average range for the UK. The variance is advertised as medium but it is pushing a bit higher in our opinion, so be ready for some tough runs with little return. Really, any hope of reaching the big wins, which max out at 5,000x, is going to come only in the free spins round which we will explain in a moment.

Paytable 8/10

The low value icons here are represented by the cards, 10 through to Ace, with wins of between 1.25x and 3x available for up to 5 on a payline.  These symbols have been meticulously designed to resemble Aztec statues in keeping with the game’s theme.

Meanwhile, premium icons deliver between 6x and 37.5x your wager when 5 land on a payline for you. They are represented by the Sun Watch, a Key, a Skull and Cat Wilde herself.

Look out as well for the Wild icon which is depicted by the Sun God which replaces all other symbols except the Scatter when contributing to winning combinations. Note as well that Wild symbols trigger a prize of 50x when 5 land on one spin. During the base game Wilds appear only on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th reel, whilst in the bonus round they can land anywhere.

Finally, check out the Moon Goddess which represents the scatter and is needed to trigger the free spins round.

Gameplay & Features 8/10

On the surface, Cat Wilde in the Eclipse of the Sun God might look like a straight-forward slot game but dig beneath and you’ll find some interesting gameplay and classic features that keep things upbeat even when the wins aren’t landing.

Here’s how it all works:

Cascading Reels and Multipliers

Fans of Gonzo’s Quest will note a similar style of animation as here, symbols that are designed as stone blocks that fall down in place on the reels against a Temple background. When a win is formed, icons that are part of it disappear. A cascade of new icons falls down in place of those ones and new wins may be created.

With each cascade that occurs, a prize multiplier increases by 1x, up to a maximum of 10x. Again, fans of NetEnt’s famous Conquistador slot will recognize the pattern.

The Free Spins Feature

The Moon Goddess Scatter that triggers free spins only appears on reels 1, 3 and 5. When it does land, it will grant 10 free spins.

But that’s not all. In the bonus round the scatters act as wilds too. And when you land 5 additional Scatters you will earn 5 extra free spins. This little extra can re-trigger to give you a maximum of 40 free spins.

And … at the same time, with each winning cascade your multiplier will continue to grow, up to a maximum of 70x!!!

Our Verdict 8.0/10

This adventure slot will have a very familiar feel for many of us as it takes different parts from a great many classic slots from Play n Go and their big rivals, NetEnt’s best games. So, if you are looking for something groud-breaking then you may wish to look eslewhere. On the other hand, what it does with classic features like progressive multipliers and free spins it does very well, and that 70x top multiplier is definitely something to get excited about.

In short, this is an engaging game and one that will have a broad appeal thanks to its combination of medium variance, crowd-pleasing features and respectable top payout!
