How We Review Slot Games

We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.

Clash of Camelot from Play n Go is based on a story from the legend of King Arthur – rival Mordred returns to the kingdom to attempt to usurp Arthur, who is non-plussed with the idea and prepares to do battle. The slot is one in a long list of games that draw on the legend including Play n Go’s own Merlin and Morgana, Mighty Arthur by Quickspin and Book of King Arthur by Just For The Win. It offers fairly basic slots action with gameplay built around wilds and multipliers, but stands out thanks to its massive 35,000x maximum win.

What Our Reviewer Says ...

"A simple high variance slot based on a well-worn legend with plenty of multiplier potential but rather basic graphics"

Overall Score: 7.4

Theme & Design

Our Score 6

Clash of Camelot tries for a dramatic opening animation setting the scene for what is to come but falls it bit short thanks to some slightly naff graphics! Once you are into the game there is a pleasantly mystical atmosphere with the reel set framed by a rocky backdrop at night with mist rolling across moonlit hillsides. The setting gives way to a stony rock face in the bonus round, in a scene awash with golden light.

Overall, it looks like Play n Go are aiming for epic but don’t quite get there as the artwork is just not that nice. Still, if you enjoy your Arthurian legends and historical slots then you’ll like the clashing knights, medieval crowns and jewels that bedeck the reels.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 7

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

Clash of Camelot has five possible RTP settings of 96.28%, 94.28%, 92.29%, 87.27% or 84.25%. You should check the RTP settings in the game before you play for real. We don’t recommend playing at lower than the 94.28%. We verified the RTP at there casinos:

  • Casumo (independent): 94.28%
  • MrQ (independent): 96.28%
  • BacanaPlay (Skill on Net): 91.29%

In this small sample, MrQ is the only site to offer Clash of Camelot at it’s optimum RTP setting. If you are concerned about RTP then this is the best place to play. If you are looking for a Play n Go slot with a higher optimum RTP you could try Rags to Riches – 97.12% – or Wildhound Derby – 96.93%.

This is also a highly volatile game. That makes it unpredictable with wild variations in payouts and a high-risk factor. In that respect it is similar to games like Book of Dead or Wild Falls 2 from the same provider.

Maximum Win

Our Score 9

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

The maximum win in Clash of Camelot is 35,000x which is excellent. To achieve this you would need to be playing with high value multipliers (100x) that come with Wilds in the free spins round. This compares favourable with most other Play n Go slots.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 8

Clash of Camelot plays on 5 reels with 3 rows of symbols each. Wins are triggered by landing identical symbols on adjacent reels from left to right, regardless of position. That gives you 20 active paylines.

Symbol values are good.

Low payers are the cards, 10 through to Ace. These are value at from 0.2x for 3 Tens on a line up to 4x for 5 Aces on a line. Premiums are the goblet, the broach, the ring and the necklace, valued at from 1x for 3 goblets up to 25x for 5 necklaces.

Clash of Camelot Paytable
Clash of Camelot offers good value particularly at the top end of the paytable

Wilds are also crucial to the gameplay. The basic wilds are crossed swords that substitute for all other symbols to complete paylines. They also have a value of 2.5x for 3 on a line, 5x for 4 on a line and 100x for 5 on a line.

In addition, watch the crown at the top of the reels which displays a multiplier value of 2x, 5x, 10x, 25x or 100x on some spins. If a wild lands on that spin it then takes the multiplier value from the crown as well.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 7

In keeping with the narrative of the game, all good things happen when Arthur and Mordred come to blows. As well as spending most of the base game hoping for high value multiplier wilds to land you should also be looking for Arthur or Mordred Wilds which land on reel 1 and 5 respectively.

Clash of Camelot Arthur Wild
King Arthur Wild always lands on reel 1 ready to do battle

Not only do these symbols act like standard wilds but they also trigger the free spins. To make that happen you need each one to land on the same row. Arthur, on row one, will land first with a battle cry, then you sit and wait to see if Mordred is game for the fight! If he is, then you get to pick from one of four free spins options.

Each option is defined by a Battleflag labelled with Courage, Nobility, Honour or Bravery.

Choosing Courage gets you 5 spins with a 10x multiplier; Nobility gets you 10 spins with a 5x multiplier; Honour gets you 25 spins with a 2x multiplier; and Bravery get you between 1 and 20 spins with a 2x to 100x multiplier.

Which of these you choose may depend on your attitude to risk but a good middle ground would be the Nobility option with 10 spins and 5x multiplier. Of course, if you are feeling really lucky you could be Brave and hope for a really high value multiplier across 20 spins! That could bring you close to that 35,000x top payout.

The free spins round promises much more eventful gameplay for two reasons. First, EVERY wild now has a multiplier of up to 100x. And second, Arthur and Mordred are now primed to do battle. When they land they always expand to full reel height, and up to 9 extra wilds are added as their swords clash.

The Final Verdict

Clash of Camelot gets a mixed score. On the one hand that 35,000x maximum win is a real crowd pleaser. However, the graphical style and much of the gameplay just feels underwhelming. If you are a big fan of historical slots or Arthurian legend, or just a Play n Go fanatic, then there is something for you here. But for our tastes it was lacking the quality to make it a game worth coming back to.
