How We Review Slot Games
We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more. For release in March 2023, Pragmatic Play, no strangers to the Wild West slot, have produced their own version of the popular lock and win games like Relax’s Money Train. We are used to Pragmatic slots with disappointing top wins in the 5,000x to 10,000x range, but this time round the top level is bumped right up to 30,000x and a mix of special symbols and money symbols can make the re-spins round go off in some style if your luck is in.

What Our Reviewer Says ...
"A solid lock n win western with potential to really kick-out big wins in the bonus round when Special symbols go 'Super'!"
Overall Score: 8.0
Theme & Design
Our Score 7
Cowboy Coins is very much a classic style western – the backdrop is a dusty town with the usual array of saloon bars and Sheriff’s offices like something out of a 70s movie. The characters themselves are straight out of the box cowboys and cowgirls, replete with gun and holster, playing cards and Stetsons. In the background a twanging electric guitar leads a pacey soundtrack.
There is nothing here to compare with the electric steampunk atmosphere of Money Train 3 or the dark and gloomy setting of Tombstone RIP, but Cowboy Coins will appeal to fans of retro stylings who just want to crack on with spinning the reels to land money bags and sliver coins.
RTP and Variance
Our Score 8
What is RTP?
RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next. Read more here. What is Variance?
Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.Cowboy Coins has three possible RTP settings:Â 96.08%, 95.06% or 94.12%. Which you play at is at the discretion of your casino. We checked the RTP at five of our favourite slot sites to see which setting was being used. Here is what we found:
- Mr Q (independent) – 96.08%
- Casumo (independent) – 94.12%
- PlayGrand (White Hat Gaming) – 94.12%
- Luckland (Aspire Global) – 94.12%
- BacanaPlay (Skill on Net) – 94.12%
The only site where BacanaPlay was running at its optimum RTP setting was MrQ. We therefore recommend you play there for the best return on your wagering.
This is alo a highly volatile slot from Pragmatic with a 5/5 rating which puts it up there with other games like Release the Kraken 2 and Cash Elevator. Wins will therefore be sporadic but a high maximum win value suggests Cowboy Coins could pump out some pretty good win sequences in time.
Maximum Win
Our Score 9
What Is Maximum Win?
Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.Cowboy Coins has a significantly higher top payout than most Pragmatic Play games at 30,000x. There are a few games with a higher max win including (180,000x), Buffalo King (93,750x) or Extra Juicy (60,000x), but 30,000x compares well with most modern high risk slots.

Symbols and Paytable
Our Score 8
The reel set for Cowboy Coins is a little different with six reels in a 3, 4, 4, 4, 4, 3 row formation. Wins are triggered by landing identical symbols across the reels from left to right along one of 2,304 payllines.
The paytable consists of some pretty standard Wild Western symbols without any extraordinary value. The low payers are the cards, 10 through to Ace, valued at up to 2x for six Aces on a line. Premiums are the cards in a Royal Flush, Gun and Holster, and 2 grissled cowboys and one cowgirl. Their values are up to 10x for six on a line.
This game does NOT have any Wild symbols. However, it does use special Money, Payer and Collector symbols to drive the action in both base game and bonus rounds. In the base game, Money symbols are valued at between 1x and 10x. In the bonus game they are valued at between 1x and 50x.

Converting Money Symbols To Payouts
The name of the game here is landing Money Symbols on reels 2 to 5 and converting them into payouts. This is done by landing Payers on reel 1 or Collectors on reel 6. When they hit at the same time as Money symbols, then the collective value of Payers or Collectors plus Moneys is paid out in one hit.
Re-Spins With Coins, Collectors, Payers and BoostersÂ
Cowboy Coins has a re-spins bonus round not completely unlike Money Train from Relax Gaming. To start, three re-spins are awarded for landing 3 or more crossed pistol scatter symbols anywhere on the reels.
Now the action moves to a night-time setting with flaming torches either side of the reel set. The new reel set has six reels. The outer two are initially 3 rows high but can grow to 4 rows high if you fill each with special symbols. The middle 4 reels are 4 rows high. Above and below the middle 4 rows are two more extra reels, with 3 symbols appearing on each.
The game is simple: Money symbols land on the middle 4 reels and special symbols triggering payouts land on the outer reels. The important point here is that special symbols LOCK into place for the full duration of the round once they land as well as re-setting the spins to three. Of course, they don’t always land, so you can have a spin with NO special symbols.
Special symbols and their actions are as follows:
- Payers – like the base game, these land on reel 1 and their value, plus that of all visible Money symbols, is added together for a payout.
- Super Payers – again, these land on reel 1. Not only do they collect their value and that of all moneys to add to the payout, they also increase the value of money symbols by their own value on every subsequent spin.
- Multi-Collectors – these land on the top reel. They trigger a payout with their value plus that of one randomly chosen money symbol on the reels with a 2x to 30x multiplier.
- Super Multi-Collectors – these are the same as Multi Collectors but they peform their function on each subsequent spin too.
- Collectors – as in the base game, these appear on reel 6 only and collect their value and that of all money symbols for a pay out.
- Super Collectors – perform as the Collectors but do so on subsequent re-spins as well.
- Double Booster- these appear only on the bottom reel. They pick between 2 and 5 money symbols at random and double their value before paying the difference between that value and the original.
- Super Double Booster – these perform as the Double Booster but do so on every subsequent spin as well.
To help you get started, the scatters that triggered the round are all converted into money symbols before your first re-spin.
Re-spins keeps going until either you run out of spins OR you fill the grid entirely with symbols.
More Games Like Cowboy Coins SlotÂ
Money Train by Relax Gaming – The most obvious comparison here is the original Money Train with its re-spins round and special symbols. The top payout here is lower at 20,000x but Relax’s slot has better atmosphere and higher UK RTP of 96.2%.
Fire in the Hole by Nolimit City – NLC’s manic western slot is, predictably, a more ferocious beast with a way-higher top win of 60,000x and innovative Collapsing Reels and xBomb wilds. Lucky Wagon spins is their explosive free spins round.

The Final Verdict
Cowboy Coins is a good Western slot with a re-spins round that very obviously draws inspiration from the Money Train series. But whilst this game is a significant upgrade from what we normally expect from Pragmatic – most of their slots peak at 5,000x or 10,000x top wins – it doesn’t really compete with the awesome high volatility action we see from Relax Gaming. The third Money Train slot with its Sniper, Collector Payer, Necromancer and Tommy Gun Snipers and 60,000x top win is on another level entirely.
But putting comparisons aside for a moment, Cowboy Coins can still be a good play in its own right. It looks great, as you would expect from a studio who specialises in Western slots. It runs with a bumper 2,304 paylines, significantly higher than the Money Train games. And the bonus round has the potential to be quite spectacular, particular if you land a few of the ‘Super’ Specials which persists for the remaining spins. They will be rare, but look out for the Super Double Boosters as they will provide the best opportunity to hit some really big wins.
