What Our Reviewer Says …
A fun game with a clever feature to create splitting symbols and a nice balanced payout model, but a little light on features.
What We Like
- Slicer splits symbols to create 1,000s of extra win ways
- Every scatter in free spins earns you an extra spin
- 10,000x max win is good for a medium variance slot
- Balanced maths model with regular wins
What We Didn't Like
- Low RTP at some slot sites
- Not many features so gets a bit boring
Theme and Design
Bright, Cheerful and Colorful Like A Sweet-Themed Slot
Jelly Slice is set in the jelly factory. Like sweet-themed slots, its all about the bright colors. The grid sits beneath 5 pipes that release jellies with cute faces onto the reels beneath whilst a happy tune plays in the background. Overseeing the whole scene is an anime-style girl with clipboard - a kind of factory floor manager with wavy pink hair (of course). It’s a far cry from Hacksaw’s dark material like Rotten or Cursed Seas, and it’ll suit those who enjoy sacharrine games like Sweetopia Royale or Sugar Rush 1,000.
RTP and Variance
Like most Hacksaw Gaming slots, Jelly Slice has more than one RTP rate – four in fact. It is down to your slot site operator to decide which one to run the game at. They are, 96.24%, 94.32%, 92.3% or 88.28%. There is quite some difference between the four and you don’t want to be playing at 88.28%. Or 92.3% for that matter.
In my experience MrQ from Lindar Media is your best bet for good RTP rates. They consistently run games at the maximum RTP. But wherever you choose to play you can check the RTP by hitting the hamburger icon at the bottom under the reels then the info button. Then scroll down until you see ‘theoretical return’.
Hacksaw rate this as a medium variance slot, so on the same level as games like Frank’s Farm or Vending Machine, kicking out more regular wins than their notoriously tough games like Hand of Anubis or Itero.
Maximum Win
Despite its medium variance Jelly Slice still comes in with a max win of 10,000x which is pretty decent. Payouts like that are usually reserved for higher volatility games.
Symbols and Paytable
The game plays out on a 5-reel grid with 4 rows per reel. It is a win ways slot so wins are triggered by landing 3 or more identical symbols on adjacent reels from left to right, regardless of their position. That gets you 1,024 win ways per spin (4x4x4x4x4).
But that’s not all because Jelly Slice also uses a ‘Slicer’ feature where symbols can be sliced and diced – a bit like NLC’s splitting cells – in order to create more win ways. In fact, at full stretch this game produces 1,048,576 win ways on single spin. We’ll explain how in the next section.
Including the Wild there are eleven symbols in the game. Pay values are not huge, but of course with so many win ways you can produce many wins on each spin, so it’s so much of a problem.
Low value symbols are the cards – 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. These are all valued at 0.2x for 3 up to 1x for 5. The premiums are the 5 jellies in red, orange, purple, blue and green. These are valued at from 0.5x for 3 greens up to 10x for 5 reds.
The Wild is a multi-coloured star which will substitute for all other pay symbols to complete a win. And it also has a value of 20x for 5 on a win way.
Features and Gameplay
Jelly Slice is a simple game. It’s all about slicing up those jellies to create more win ways and unlocking a free spins round. Here is how it works.
Tumble Wins
Before we start slicing, a reminder that this is a tumble wins game. That means, for every win, winning symbols are removed from the grid, existing ones drop down into spaces and new ones drop in to fill the gaps left behind. This can create more wins, and further tumbles.
Slicer
Jellies are going to drop down a pipe above each reel and onto the grid. Before each spin, a slicer with a number on it MAY appear above any position on the grid. Jellies that pass through the slicer are split into the same number of pieces as displayed on the slicer before they settle on the positions beneath.
So, each symbol that drops onto the grid can split into as many as FOUR different pieces. Each sliced symbol counts as one in a win way. And, new symbols dropping in as the result of tumbles will be sliced too, so you can start to build many, many more win ways as the sequence progresses.
Razor Sharp Bonus Free Spins Round
The free spins round is triggered by landing 5 or more scatters. Each scatter, represented by an FS, is equivalent to one spin. So, if you land 8, you’ll get 8 spins.
During this feature, slicers are more likely to appear! And you can extend the round on every spin by landing more FS scatters as follows (remember, they can be sliced too).
- 1 FS symbol – 1 more free spin
- 2 FS symbol – 2 more free spin
- 3 FS symbol – 3 more free spin
- 4 FS symbol – 4 more free spin
Final Verdict
Hacksaw Gaming is a studio that swings from one extreme to the others. They have a dark and a light side and this one is on the light side. The production is cute and fun and will appeal to anyone who likes classic sweet-themed games, whilst the nice medium variance means you can expect a fairly easy ride and a good few cracks at the free spins round as our testing showed. The gameplay is OK, but the novelty of those slicers can wear off quite quickly. Not one of Hacksaw’s best then, but still a charming little slot
Testing Notes
I played 200 spins on Jelly Slice on Hacksaw Gaming’s test server prior to release to test the game. This is what happened.
- Stake Size: 1
- Start balance: 5,000.0
- End balance: 5,087.4
- Win Rate: 20.5% (41 winning spins in 200)
- Biggest Win: 67.1x
- Free Spins Round: 3
First thing I should say is, despite its medium variance this game produced a couple of long losing streaks of 10 or more spin with no payout. However, over the session overall the win rate was OK at 20.5% and the most impressive part was 3 free spins rounds in just 200 spins. That’s unusually high, and could have just been a lucky day, but still feels like an indicator that Jelly Slice is a more generous game than Hacksaw’s more volatile ones.
The slicer feature, which is what this game is all about, appeared on about 10% of spins, so don’t expect to see it all the time. And it was most useful in the free spins round when I triggered a 67.1x payout where a 4 and a 2 were in play on the grid at the same time for the first spin and tumble follow-ups.
I finished with a net positive balance so not a bad session, but overall the game felt a bit too same-y with not enough features to want to come back to again.
