Mafia Gold by Play n Go takes the mafia theme and runs riot with it. Played on 5 reels and 4 rows with an additional feature reel, this slot promises chaos (in the best way). Mafia Gold certainly played like a high variance slot and I ran down the balance fairly quickly waiting for a big moment to drop and none did. It’s a fun slot though and theme is nicely woven into the gameplay. The best moments were the Drive By Wilds where an old skool gangster car drives over the front of the reels and they lob wilds onto the grid. That produced my biggest win of 20.2x. Elsewhere there was an 18x where wilds came into play. You’ll also see multipliers dropping down the right side A LOT but it’s frustrating because more often than not they don’t get used. I scored ONLY 7 wins with those multipliers in 300 spins. Still, they can be powerful when they appear adjacent to a win line, it just doesn’t happen that often.

Overall the win rate for my session was 22.6% which isn’t bad, but it was very streaky. The free spins round looks like a good one, but sadly I wasn’t able to get there on this occasion.

Play n Go often begin their games with a cinema-style intro and Mafia Gold is no different. You’re catapulted into the streets of New York amidst a gang shoot out. It’s clear from the get go that this game is going to be gritty.

Once you’re in the game itself, it doesn’t disappoint. The background is New York at nighttime with windows glowing amber against a moody midnight background. The reels are made up of menacing mafia members, complete with golden bullets. It absolutely isn’t going to suit everyone, but those with a penchant for mafia themed slots (of which there are many) will love the sleek yet seedy design.

Mafia Gold is played on 5 reels and 4 rows, with an additional feature reel, which we’ll cover in more detail later. There are 30 fixed paylines, with wins made from the leftmost reel going right. You need to match at least 3 symbols to form a win.

There are 11 pay symbols plus a wild which can substitute for any regular symbols. The low value symbols are the playing cards (9, 10, J, Q, K, A) which pay out from 2x your bet for 5 symbols, up to 4x your bet for 5 symbols. The premium symbols are the mafia members each on a different coloured background. These pay from 5x up to 10x your stake for 5x symbols, with the Gold member being the most premium of all.

There is also a wild symbol, represented by the gun, which can substitute for any regular pay symbol to complete a payline. But it has not pay value on its own.

Mafia Gold might at first appear like a pretty classic slot, but as soon as that feature reel starts delivering, you’ll quickly realise it isn’t. However, that’s not the only interesting feature in this game. Let’s take a look at them all in detail.

Mystery Wins

If you land two scatter symbols then there’s a chance you’ll receive a mystery win. These are collected automatically and can earn you between 5x and 20x your stake. 

Drive By Wilds

Ready for something chaotic? Drive by wilds can be triggered at the start of any normal spin. If it is, a mobster zooms past in a dark car and chucks a molotov cocktail onto the reels. This adds up to 11 wild symbols to the reels.

Feature Reel

The feature reel is the ‘6th’ reel that sits to the right of the screen. In the base game it delivers multiplier values between 2x and 10x the bet at random. If a Gold Mafia symbol lines up with a multiplier then the multiplier applies to every winning combination currently on the reels. It can also randomly add wilds and cash prizes to the reels.

You need to land three scatter symbols to trigger the free spins round and begin with 10 free spins. If you land 4 scatters you’ll get 15 spins and 5 scatters gets you 20. 

Tip: If you only land two scatter symbols then don’t feel like you’ve missed out! This triggers the mystery wins function for the chance to win up to 20x.

If you begin the bonus round (by landing 3-5 scatters) the feature reel’s function changes slightly. It now collects cash values of between 1x and 10x the stake. These are collected in a safe at the top of the reel and at the end of the round you’re paid out everything in the safe.

Another interesting feature are the bullet symbols that appear in the feature reel. If these line up with the Gold Mafia symbol then they can shoot gang members. The members are displayed above the reels and each one can take 10 bullets. If you successfully kill a gang member then you get an extra 5 free spins and whichever symbol you killed is upgraded to the payout of the gold gang member symbol.

Cash Hit Feature

If you eliminate all five members of the gang then you receive an additional five free spins. Then, the Cash Hit feature begins. The value that was in the safe during the free spins round is now added to the feature reel as safe symbols. These are collected any time the gold mafia symbol lines up with them.

The Final Verdict

If you’re after an all guns blazing approach to the mafia theme then Mafia Gold is a solid choice. The innovative features like the Cash Hit and Drive By Wilds feature fit in seamlessly and offer you the chance to claim some decent wins. The feature reel is also a stroke of genius, especially its dual purpose in the base game and the bonus round. 

The default RTP is pretty generous, though the lower RTPs are definitely best avoided. The high volatility might put off some players, but the max win of 6,000x your bet is good enough.
