About Rich Wilde and the Amulet of Dead

As all good slots players know, Play n Go’s Book of Dead is up there with the very best high variance slots of all time, introducing us to the now famous Rich Wilde and setting up a series of copycat games that never quite match the thrill of the original. So successful was the original that Play n Go have made it into something of a franchise with several equally popular Rich Wilde sequels, including this one for April 2021, The Amulet of Dead slot.

The game has a familiar feel to it with an Ancient Egyptian theme as always and a bunch of features include Wilds, Free Spins and Stacking symbols to drive up the wins. The top payout is a little lower than others in the series, but the entertainment levels are still high. Wins are delivered in the base game from a standard 3 identical symbols on paylines from left to right.

Play starts from just 10p per spin at all new slot sites.

RTP and Variance 8/10

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

In Amulet of Dead slot the RTP is set to a pretty standard 96.29% which means you get good value out of your gameplay. The variance is a little lower than in the original Book of Dead slot – set at medium to high. This still means a pretty unstable maths model though and quite a risky venture if you decide to spin the reels. You can expect plenty of no-win spins before anything good happens and remember all the best stuff happens in the bonus rounds so try to land those scatters which unlock the free spins.

The top prize is 10,000x, though it will be an extremely rare occurrence for anyone to get close to this.

Paytable 8/10

In The Amulet of Dead low-value icons are represented by the standard playing card symbols 10 through Ace, all designed in an Egyptian style, awarding 20x and 30x your bet for 5 of a kind. The premium symbols that can trigger payouts of from 150x to 1,000x the stake when combos of 5 identical ones land simultaneously are depicted with Horus, Anubis, Tutankhamen and Rich Wilde himself.

Look out as well for the Wild symbol which is a representation of Thoth, a terrifying deity which ruled the underworld and here substitutes for all symbols except for the Scatter to form wins. He performs a further critical role in the gameplay as we will soon find out.

There is also a Wild Scatter which replaces all icons except the Expanding symbol and additionally awards between 2x and 1,000x if it lands on reels 2 to 5. Finally, there is another special Scatter icon, depicted with a Pendant, which is required to activate the Free Spins Round. As well as giving you free plays, landing 3, 4 or 5 Scatters also triggers wins of 20x, 200x and 2,000x respectively.

Gameplay & Features 8/10

With a top payout of 2,500x, Amulet of Dead might seem a little bit tepid in comparison to other slots in the Rich Wilde series. But fear not, because there is still plenty of good feature-led action that can lead to some pretty impressive win sequences and edge of your seat moments. Really, as in most high-risk slots, it’s all about multipliers and the free spins round. Here is how it all works:

Thoth Multiplier

The main Thor Wild lands in stacks, and landing one of these on reels 2, 3 and 4 gets you additional multipliers applied to any wins. One stack gets a 2x multiplier, two stacks gets a 3x multiplier and three stacks gets a 5x multiplier. In addition, Thor is important because in the Free Spins round this icon can take the place of the Expanding symbol. More on that in a moment.

The Free Spins Feature

When 3 Scatters land together in any position on the reels, the Free Spins Round is activated, but before it begins, a random symbol is chosen to work as the Expanding icon.

This symbol then works to give you more wins during the round. If there is an opportunity to form a win, it will expand to complete the payline, thereby increasing the overall potential of the game.

NOTE: it is possible to re-trigger the free spins with three more scatters and technically it is possible to have unlimited free spins by continually landing three scatters!

Our Verdict 8.0/10

Rich Wilde and the Amulet of Dead is not the best slot in the Book of … series from Play n Go. Perhaps it is the slightly lower variance, or the 2,500x top payout (which falls short of what is required to get the blood pumping in today’s slot market) but this slot doesn’t quite hit the heights in the same way that others do. Nevertheless, there is still some fun to be had and the combination of wilds, symbols stacks and free spins can bring on some exciting moments. But if it doesn’t float your boat, you can always return to the original that rarely lets you down!
