Theme and Design
Another Superb Production This Time In A Snowy, Nightime Setting
Rich Wilde slots from Play n Go are consistently high quality and have been improving each time since the original Book of Dead was released over 10 years ago. Like the others, this one takes us to a far-flung Egyptian setting, this time with a snowy night time backdrop and giant stone statues framing the reel set. The artwork is superb as ever with intricate pay symbols too, and it gets better still if you unlock the free spins round where you enter a cavernous tomb lit-up by torchlight. Your soundtrack is an atmospheric flute-drum ensemble. Scene set, you’re in the mood to spin …
RTP and Variance
Like many Play n Go slots, Wandering City has FIVE RTP settings. They are 96.2%, 94.2%, 91.2%, 87.2% and 84.2%. You will find the game running at any one of these RTP settings at slot sites in the UK. Playing at 96.2% is great – that is around average – but anything less is not good value for money. Therefore I recommend that you check the RTP settings on the game info screen wherever you play before you spin for real.
Like most Rich Wilde games, this is a high variance slot so it will be volatile with an uneven win distribution. It has some great features and a good free spins round but it is hard to unlock as I found in testing.
Maximum Win
The top payout available on a single spin is 10,000x. That makes it one of the highest paying Rich Wilde slots, higher than Book of Dead (5,000x) and Amulet of Dead (2,500x), but lower than the recent Aztec Idols (22,752x).
Symbols and Paytable
Pay Symbols Are Low Value But There Are 243 Win Ways
This is very much a classic ‘Book of’ style slot. It runs on 5 reels, each displaying 3 rows of symbols. However, rather than running with the usual 10 paylines, instead this is a win ways game. That means wins are triggered by landing identical symbols on adjacent reels from left to right, regardless of the row they land on.
That means 243 win ways per spin – 3x3x3x3x3.
Pay symbols are not huge in value but you do get the help of up to 3 2x multipliers on any spin to boost the payouts.
Low payers are the cards, 9 through to Ace. These are valued at from 0.2x for 3 9s up to 1x for 5 Aces. The premiums are the dagger, statue, skull and Rich Wilde himself. These are valued at from 0.2x for 3 daggers up to 4x for 5 Rich Wildes.
The other big symbol to look out for is the Diamond which doubles down as both Wild and Scatter. As a wild it substitutes for all other pay symbols to complete win ways. Its also valued at 0.2x, 0.8x, 1.6x and 4x for 3, 4, 5 or 6 on a win way.
Features and Gameplay
As far as features go, there is nothing too ground-breaking in Wandering City, though that is something fans of this series are used to, as each slot follows a similar format.
2x Multipliers On Reels 2, 3 and 4
Play n Go have added this little extra: a 2x multiplier which randomly appears on reels 2, 3 and 4 on any spin throughout the game. The multiplier applies to any win way that passes through the reel it is on. If more than one appears, then they are added together before the payout is calculated.
NOTE: This feature was active A LOT in testing - 30% of the time in fact!
10 Free Spins With Expander Symbol
As standard for Rich Wilde slots, landing 3 or more Scatters (Diamond Wild) will trigger the free spins round. You get 10 spins as usual. And before they begin, one symbol is chosen to become an Expanding Symbol. When it drops on a reel, if by expanding it can complete win ways, then it will do so, covering its entire reel in the process.
The best part is, these expanders do not need to be adjacent to another identical symbol to create a win way. They can be separated by 1 or more reels, making it easier to score wins with them.
Finally, in keeping with tradition, landing 3 or more scatters on one spin will trigger an extra 10 spins, and this can be done no less than FIVE times! So up to 60 free spins are possible from one triggering spin.
Final Verdict
Rich Wilde and the Wandering City provides a nice balance between traditional features from games in this series and some nice additions. The reel multipliers are certainly a treat, particularly as they activate so regularly. I really enjoyed the win ways mechanic too, which feels more modern than the old 10 payline format of slots like Book of Dead. Perhaps the best part about Wandering City however was the quality production – the sound and visuals are excellent. As ever, beware of the volatility, because it can be a tight slot, but for those who enjoy the Rich Wilde this is certainly a worthy addition to the series.
Testing Notes
I played 200 spins on Rich Wilde and the Wandering City for free at Casumo Casino to test the game and this is what happened.
- Stake Size: £1
- Start balance: £25,000
- End balance: £24,899.20
- Biggest Win: 15.9x
- Free Spins Feature: 1
- Session Time: 19 minutes 10 seconds
Typically for a high variance slot, Wandering City did a lot of damage to my balance in 200 spins. The low pay table values meant that when wins did trigger they were generally small. However, I should point out for balance that the multiplier reels are no afterthought. They were active on 30% of spins by my count which was impressive, helping to boost some less-than-stake-size wins to 5x or more. The free spins round was the highlight, dropping once. It only triggered a 15.9x win where the Jack was the expander, but it’s nicely executed with a fun animation taking you through to the underground tomb.
Overall, there were no big surprises. The game plays nicely and whilst my top win was small, it’s easy to see how combining those reel multipliers with a high value expanding symbol could really make the bonus round go off.
