Rich Wilde is one of the most famous faces in online slots of course and the back catalogue of ‘Book of …’ games from Play n Go featuring both him and his intrepid sibling, are some of the most consistently good on record. This game format has been copied by everyone form Big Time Gaming in Book of Gods to Slingo Originals in Book of Slingo, but few do it better than the creators of the original Book of Dead game. Play n Go rarely stray too far from the original format of a simple base game and free spins round with random expanders. And why would you when it works this well?
So, for Rich Wilde and the Wandering City our hero is back in another exotic locations with a difficult quest ahead of him. The backdrop this time is South America in the mythical City of Caesars, more authentically called la Ciudad de los Césares, which is said to be located in Patagonia, between mountains of diamonds and gold. Both dangers and treasures can be found here.
Our man is his usual dashing self, sporting bold facial hair and a furry jacket, sitting amidst an array of symbols are all related to equipment or treasures from his adventures. The gameplay is familiar with a couple of small tweaks to keep things interesting. Overall, this slot, available now at most slot sites in the UK, will appeal to any fan of the ‘Book of …’ series as well as new comers.

RTP and Variance
Our Score 7
What is RTP?RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next. Read more here.
What is Variance?Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.
Starting with the maths and the RTP of this slot is 96.2%, which is pretty much average for ‘Book of …’ games and most slots in general. The volatility level is high, again something all ‘Book of …’ slots have in common, so you will experience a pretty uneven distribution of payouts with long lean spells but potentially high returns when things start going your way. The minimum bet is 10p which opens up the game to those with smaller budgets, though if you are risk averse we recommend trying something with a less volatile maths model as this one can burn through your bankroll very quickly.
For the luckiest explorers, a 10,000x stake top payout is achievable but keep in mind that the odds are in fact well over 1,000,000 to 1 to hit that! However, with a good mix of multipliers and a high value expander in the bonus round you could still hit wins of over 1,000x on a good day.
Symbols and Paytable
Our Score 8
Like all ‘Book of …’ games Rich Wilde and the Wandering City plays out on a 5 reel by 3 row set. The big difference is that there are 243 paylines in play at any one time, significantly more than normal. This impacts the payouts and symbols are of a lower value than other slots in the series. They include intricately designed skulls, statues and daggers, along with explorer Rich. The best symbol to watch out for is of course Rich himself, who pays 4x your bet for 5 of a kind. The other picture symbols award the next payouts on the paytable, wile high card symbols award the lower rewards. You’ll also see a diamond, which is the Wild symbol and also acts as a scatter with the power to launch the bonus feature.
Features and Gameplay
Our Score 8
The key here is to unlock that bonus round and hope for a high value expander symbol. The base game itself is very light on features as we have come to expect. Here is how it works.
During the base game, you can enjoy a random Multiplier on reels 2, 3 or 4. If you land more than one Multiplier, they will be multiplied together to produce a larger Multiplier and potentially some strong payouts.
The diamond is Wild, substituting for all other symbols in the game to create more potential winning combinations. This symbol also has the power to trigger the Free Spins bonus round.
Landing 3 or more Wild diamonds will trigger the Free Spins round, awarding 10 Free Spins along with a payout of 0.8x, 1.6x or 4x your bet, depending on how many diamonds landed. Before the Free Spins begin, one symbol is chosen to become the Expanding Symbol. After normal payouts have been awarded, the Expanding Symbol covers its entire reel and act like Scatters to award new potential payouts anywhere on the screen.
Landing 3 more diamonds during the Free Spins round will trigger another 10 Free Spins with the potential to re-trigger the round up to 5 times.
The Final Verdict
Our Score 8.0
Rich Wilde and the Wandering City is designed in the classic style of the ‘Book Of’ slot series and offers little in the way of surprises to those who know these games well. The only real change is that the regular symbol payouts are quite low in value to make up for the extra win ways and Multipliers available in the base game, but other than that its business as usual. The maths model is standard high variance whilst the top payout is reasonable, if not pushing the heights of other high risk games on the market right now.
Overall, whilst quite generic, one of the unexpected great strengths of this game is that it has a great atmosphere and artwork, and it’s always fun to see where Rich Wilde is headed to next. Those bored of watching Rich in ancient Egypt or the deepest jungles will certainly get a kick out of the epic backdrop and mythical narrative for sure.
In summary, we recommend this game to anyone who loves the Book of series or wants to try a high call high risk game this new year!
