Temple of Torment
By Hacksaw Gaming
Temple of Torment is a medium variance slot from Hacksaw Gaming from May 2023 with 5 reels, 14 paylines and a sizable maximum payout of 10,000x. It depicts an epic clash between the Ancient Egyptian Gods, Ra and Anubis. Watch out for Scarab Wild symbols that expand upwards or downwards if they would complete win lines in doing so. They also trigger multipliers of up to 200x if they expand through other wilds. There are also two free spins rounds where wilds are sticky and a global progressive multiplier comes into play.
This dramatic slot with superb production can be played from just 10p per spin.

Theme and Design
Superb Visuals and Soundtrack Creating a Tense, Compelling Slot
Typically for Hacksaw, the visuals and sounds in Temple of Torment are of a very high quality. There is a real sense of power and drama in this game that draws you in.
The action takes place against the backdrop of a stone temple in the skies. Ra, god of sun, hovers to the top left of the reels. Anubis, from the underworld and in the same terrifying form as we found in Hand of Anubis, appears bottom right. A halo or flying rocks circles above them, symbols drop on the reels with a satisfying thud, and lightning strikes and Anubis gives out a roar when expanding wilds land.

The soundtrack in Temple of Torment is sparse which is not uncommon for Hacksaw either, but it only adds to the tension.
In short, though we've been here before with Ancient Egyptian slots and the gods, the quality of the production means Temple of Torment more than holds its own against others from the genre.
RTP and Variance
Temple of Torment has four available RTP settings: 96.22%, 94.13%, 92.21% or 88.22%. The optimum is good, and a little above average for a UK slot. However, which setting you play at will depend on your casino operator. We verified the RTP of Temple of Torment at five UK slot sites to find out what setting they were running the game at. This is what we found:
- Casumo (independent): 94.09%
- BacanaPlay (Skill on Net): 92.19%
- Barz (White Hat Gaming): 94.09%
- Pub Casino (L and L Europe): 94.09%
- MrQ (independent): 96.2%
In our research, MrQ was the only slot site to run Temple of Torment at the optimum RTP. MrQ regularly performs well in these checks and we recommend that you play there if RTP is a priority for you.
Temple of Torment is also a medium variance slot like Born Wild or Break Bones by the same game provider. It won’t be as tough to break down as a game like Hand of Anubis or Gladiator Legends, making it an easier entry point if you are trying out Hacksaw for the first time.
Maximum Win
It’s interesting to note that Temple of Torment has a 10,000x top win which is the highest of any medium variance slot by Hacksaw. Most come in around 5,000x to 7,500x, and 10,000x gives this one the same potential as high variance games like Alpha Eagle and Undead Fortune.

Symbols and Paytable
Great Value In The Paytable At The Premium End
The reel configuration in Temple of Torment matches that of another recent Hacksaw Gaming slot – Beast Below – with 5 reels, 4 rows and 14 paylines. As ever, wins are triggered by landing 3 or more identical symbols across a payline from left to right, starting at the left most reel.

Symbol values are better than you find at other Hacksaw slots. Low payers are the cards, 10 through to Ace with payouts of 0.2x for 3 10s right up to 5x for 5 Aces. Premiums are the Egyptian symbols, Anubis and Ra characters, valued at 1x for 3 right up to a superb 30x for 5 Ra symbols.
There is also a Wild in the mix which substitutes for all other symbols to form wins AND pays out a chunky 40x for 5 on a line.
Overall, an impressive paytable.
Features and Gameplay
Expanding Wilds In The Base Game And Progressive Multipliers In The Bonus Round
We are not on unfamiliar ground with the features in Temple of Torment which are all variations on recent additions to the Hacksaw armoury, including expanding wilds and two bonus rounds with additional wild multipliers.
Expanding Wild Golden Scarabs
Like the Expanding Siren Wilds in Beast Below, when a Wild Golden Scarab symbol lands, if by expanding it can help create a win line, then it does. The difference here is that these ones can expand up OR down, though when more than one appears on the reels they must all expand in the same direction.
Wild Golden Scarabs themselves do not have multipliers attached. However, if by expanding they pass through an ordinary wild, that symbol acquires a multiplier of its own of 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x or 200x.
When more than one wild multiplier is included in a win, then they are first added before being applied to the winline.

Free Spins Rounds
There are two of these, as standard for Hacksaw. In this case there are also two types of FS Scatters – one for Anubis and one for Ra.
Anguish of Anubis Bonus Round
You will need 3 or more Anubis FS Scatters to trigger this round – 3, 4 or 5 scatters gets you 10, 12 or 14 spins.
The gameplay is enhanced here with a better chance of landing either Wilds or Wild Golden Scarabs, both of which stick for the remainder of the round.
It is also possible to extend the round f you land 2 or 3 more FS Scatters to earn another 2 or 4 spins respectively.

Reign of Ra Bonus Round
You will need 3 or more Ra FS Scatters to trigger Ra’s round – again 3, 4 or 5 scatters gets you 10, 12 or 14 spins.
Once again, multipliers are key. All wild multipliers are collected and added to a global multiplier displayed at the top of the reels. When a wild multiplier is added, the global one becomes active for that spin.
And again, landing 2 or 3 more FS scatters here gets you 2 or 4 more spins.
Final Verdict
There are several recent Hacksaw Gaming slots that utilise the expanding symbols, wilds and multipliers format – Beast Below, Cursed Seas and Stormforged are the most obvious examples. But whilst Temple of Torment does similar things, there are critical differences that makes this game more playable.
Firstly, expanders can expand up OR down, which means they trigger more frequently. And secondly, the overall configuration of this game – including higher symbol values, a higher top win potential, and a medium variance – all contribute to a game that appears more willing to drop a win at any time. This makes Temple of Torment a great entry point for new players who want to enjoy Hacksaw slots for the first time, and for regular fans, a great opportunity to enjoy the quality of this studio’s slots without the pain often inflicted by their more volatile offerings!
Testing Notes
I spun 200 times on Temple of Torment at Pub Casino to test the gameplay. Here is my session by the numbers:
- Spins: 200
- Stake Size: 10p
- Start balance: £1.38
- End balance: £31.80
- Biggest Win (excluding bonus rounds): 42x
- Biggest Win (including bonus rounds): 110x
- Free Spins rounds: 2
- Session Time: 20 minutes
Temple of Torment showed me some love here, with regular wins reflecting the medium variance engine. Twice over 200 spins the free spins round triggered. First, the Anubis round, with a 23x win, then the Ra round which produced a 110x win thanks to some good multipliers. Even in the base game with some nice wild multiplier combinations the game produced a 42x win at one point. Overall, from this relatively short test session I got a good feel from Temple of Torment - the expander wilds landed around once in every 10 spins and to get 2 free spins rounds in 200 isn't bad at all.
You can see the highlights of the Reign of Ra bonus round in the video below.
