How We Review Slot Games

We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.

The second Pragmatic Play release for February 2023 after Cowboy Coins, The Dog House Multihold is the third in the trilogy after the original and Megaways versions. This one has higher potential than the original, utilises the same sticky multiplier wilds mechanic, but adds significantly more to the bonus round as four-reel sets become available, with wilds carried over onto each new one that unlocks.

It’s an untamed beast compared to its predecessor – more Rottweiler than Pug!

What Our Reviewer Says ...

"A worthwhile follow-up that will please dog-lovers and Pragmatic fans with it's sticky wild multi-reel bonus round"

Overall Score: 7.8

Theme & Design

Our Score 9

This slot takes us on a trip to cartoon suburbia with white picket fences and bungalows where owners fawn over their prized pooches. In terms of style Multihold is not much different to Hacksaw’s brilliant Pug Life which dropped just a few months earlier. In this case, to the sounds of an upbeat keyboard interspersed with with barking canines, a cast of adoring pugs, sausage dogs and slavering rottwielers populate the reels that sit atop a wooden dog-house.

The vibe is humorous, entertaining and above all friendly. You’ll soon have a favourite mutt based on looks as much as the symbol value! It’s that kind of game.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 7

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

The Dog House Multihold has three possible RTP settings. They are 96.06%, 95.14% and 94.10%. In the UK, most casinos run with the lower setting of 94.10%. You can check this for yourself by viewing the game info screen in the slot once it is live. We checked the RTP setting at four UK slot sites we like and this is what we found:

  • Casumo (independent) – 94.10%
  • MrQ (independent) – 96.06%
  • Luckland (Aspire Global) – 94.10%
  • PlayGrand (White Hat Gaming) – 94.10%
  • BacanaPlay (Skill on Net) – 94.10%

MrQ from Lindar Media offer the best RTP for this game so if this stat is important to you then we recommend that you play there.

The volatility rating, also displayed in the game info screen is 5/5 making this one of Pragmatic’s more volatile games and up there with their February 2023 release, Cowboy Coins. We recommend you play this game if you enjoy high risk slots play and are prepared to put up with those tough spells in order to chase down the big wins.

Maximum Win

Our Score 7

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

The Dog House Multihold has a maximum payout potential of 9,000x.This is about average for a high variance Pragmatic Play game. Whilst many high risk slots now have top payouts well in excess of 10,000x, most Pragmatic games top out at somewhere around the 9,000x to 10,000x mark. There are a few that are higher – Cowboy Coins pays up to 30,000x for example.

For higher potential you should try a provider like Nolimit City or Relax Gaming.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 7

The base game for The Dog House Multi hold takes place on a 5 reel and 3 row reel set with 20 active paylines in play. Wins are triggered by landing 3 or more identical symbols across the reels from left to right. The whole game expands to four reel sets in the bonus round which unlock one by one if bonus symbols land.

The paytable doesn’t offer particularly high wins apart from at the top end of the premiums. However, you can boost their value with multipliers in the free spins round.

The Dog House Multihold
The Dog House Multihold Slot – Paytable

Low payers here are the cards 10 through to Ace. These are valued at between 0.1x for three 10s and 2.5x for five Aces. The premiums are represented by the dog bone, dog collar, and four dogs – dachshund, pug, terrier and rottweiler. There are valued at from 0.4x for three dog bones up to 25x for five rottweillers.

There is also a Dog House Wild which lands on reels 2, 3 and 4 only and substitutes in for all others symbols to complete paylines but does NOT have a value of its own. It can carry multipliers of 2x of 3x though.

Finally, you’ll need to look out for the Paw Print scatter which lands only on reels 1, 3 and 5 to trigger free spins.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 9

Multiplier Wilds Combine Up to 9x

The multiplier wilds can drop at any time in base game and bonus rounds. They can combine when more than one completes a winline. In this case they are multiplied together, not added. So, 3 3x multipliers gives you a 9x multiplier.

Free Spins Plays On 4 Reels With Sticky Wilds

Unlocking the free spins round is achieved by landing THREE paw scatters. Initially, you get a 2x payout plus 7 spins.

Now, you have the potential to play on 4 reel sets, each with 5 reels and 3 rows. But you will have to unlock the extra three one by one. To do this you need to land three bonus scatters on the last unlocked reel each time. Each time this happens you also get another 1 to 3 free spins added to your total.

You can also unlock more than one extra reel on one spin – by landing six bonus symbols.

And there is another important feature here – sticky wilds! All wild multipliers that land during the bonus round are sticky. They stick on the reel they land on PLUS they are transferred over to the next reel that opens. This is big because your win potential across four reel sets with sticky wilds in place is much greater than just one!

The Final Verdict

Follow-up slots don’t always work out. For every hit – the Money Train series – there are usually more than a few misses. In this case, Pragmatic have added enough differentiation to make the latest Dog House iteration worth playing. Don’t forget, this was a popular slot in its original form, so messing with the formula comes with risks. But by keeping key features – namely sticky wild multipliers and the overall design and style – then adding the locked reels in the bonus round, Pragmatic have found the right balance between old and new.

A 9,000x max win is not huge by today’s standards – Pragmatic never offer the kind of pay outs to match Nolimit City or Big Time Gaming – but it’s still OK. And with the cumulative power of those sticky multiplier wilds across four reels with extra spins being added, this game has the potential to produce some hefty wins.
