Spin the 5×3 reels of this 2021 release from as little as £0.10 per play, up to a maximum of £50. As you do, you’ll notice some of the 15 symbols on the grid randomly splitting in two. This creates extra paylines, which can really ramp up the wins during the free spins bonus.

Two well-known characters, Arthur and Mordred, are the protagonists. They serve as wilds, but if one of each should land on the same row, the free spins round will begin. At this point, you can choose from one of four gameplay options: 5 free spins with a 10x multiplier, 10 spins with 5x, 25 spins with 2x or a completely random option.

Whatever your choice, you’ll be happy to see both Arthur and Mordred appearing on the reels again. Why? Because when they do, they expand to cover the entire reel and start a sword fight. This can result in as many as nine multiplier wilds hitting the reels, offering a shot at that potential 35,000x maximum win.

Coils of Cash By The Numbers

The first of many Play’n GO titles offering a top payout of 30,000x, Coils of Cash is another highly volatile slot. It features a 6×3 grid sitting below a horizontal reel known as the Power Coil, which contains four additional symbols. These will cascade onto the reels below as winning symbols disappear, potentially creating further combinations. 

What’s more, every time a symbol from the Power Coil falls through to the main grid, the corresponding multiplier increases. This can reach a possible 5x, and any wins involving a symbol above the multiplier value increase accordingly. If more than one applies, they’ll be multiplied together, up to a maximum of 625x!

Further, the game’s wild symbol can only be found on the Power Coil. If one was to cascade onto the reels with a sizable multiplier in play, you could be looking at some chunky rewards. Therein lies the trick to hitting that 30,000x reward.

Prism of Gems  By The Numbers

Ranked 9/10 by the developer, Prism of Gems is much more volatile than the earlier Frozen Gems and Perfect Gems. It uses the same horizontal reel idea as Coils of Cash, but the main grid is 5×3 with three symbols above. You can play from just £0.20 per spin, with a cap of £100.

The graphics are nothing spectacular, resembling many other gem-based slots. However, each symbol can split, transforming the basic 3-4-4-4-3 configuration into a potential 3-7-7-7-3 layout. The same multiplier system as Prism of Gems exists, with cascading symbols boosting each figure to a possible 7x each. That makes for a maximum multiplier of 343x.

If you find at least three scatter symbols, your reward is 10, 15 or 20 free spins. Further scatters add an extra two spins for every symbol. Importantly though, existing multipliers carry over into the bonus feature, which is the best way to try and secure the maximum win.

Raging Rex 2 By The Numbers

Free spins are the key to banking the big win, which has increased massively from the first game’s 5,000x top prize. Drop a minimum of three dinosaur egg scatters onto the reels to trigger the bonus. The exact number of free spins awarded depends upon which bonus game you opt to play. 

Regardless of your choice, the final win is multiplied in line with the number of scatters triggering the feature: 5x, 10x, 25, or 100x. One of several Arthurian slots found in Play’n GO’s catalogue, Merlin’s Grimoire was released a few months before Clash of Camelot. Rather than focusing on the king, this time the mystical wizard Merlin is at the centre of the action. Join him on his quest to locate the Grimoire, a powerful spellbook.

The dramatic soundtrack and colourful graphics add a lot, but it’s hard to take the voiceover too seriously. Imagine Sean Bean playing literally any fantasy character, such as Ned Stark in Game Of Thrones, and that’s the voice of Merlin. The slot’s mechanics are great though, mixing the developer’s trademark Book Of Dead-style features with splitting symbols and 7,776 ways to win.

The titular Grimoire is the secret to landing the most magical of rewards in this game. This symbol acts as both a wild and a scatter, awarding 10 free spins and a variable multiplier when three or more appear.

Ronin’s Honour By The Numbers

A ronin is a nomadic samurai with no master or clan. And in this April 2023 release, Play’n GO tells the tale of a female ronin on a quest to defeat Hannya, her sworn enemy. As you’d expect, the game is packed with Japanese martial arts references, including shuriken and katana blades.

The slot’s Mystery Masks are potentially valuable, as they can fill the entire reel with other random symbols, including Ninja Wilds. An elaborately decorated kabuto helmet serves as the scatter. Hitting three of these launches the Battle free spins feature. Here, the two characters fight, losing lives when either wilds or split wilds appear.

This slot will appeal to the more casual player, with its minimum bet of just £0.05 and £25 upper limit. It is volatile, with a score of 8/10 on the variance scale, but that’s to be expected with such a potentially rewarding game.

Launched in August 2021, this 5×4 stars Hugo the Troll and his wife Hugolina in a gold mining expedition. Set in a cartoonish underground mine, the pair are tasked with gathering as many nuggets as possible, while avoiding the evil Scylla.

The pot of gold symbol is the game’s wild. But as well as substituting for other icons, it also pays 10x for five on any of the 1,024 paylines. However, your best shot at dropping the 25,000x maximum win lies with the three main characters. Each offers a unique modifier that could appear on their own designated reel. 

Hugo can randomly provide wilds on reel 3, helping you to secure winning combinations. Meanwhile, Hugolina can add multipliers of up to 10x to reel 2, with Scylla throwing up to nine possible mystery symbols on reel 4. These modifiers can really add up to produce some epic payouts.

Colt Lightning By The Numbers

Enough horsing around. Let’s discuss this 2023 release, with its 3-4-4-4-3 layout and variable RTP that ranges from 84.27% to 96.24%. Scoring 7/10 on Play’n GO’s volatility chart, you can expect a fair amount of variance from Colt Lightning. But the promise of a potential 25,000x win makes it seem worthwhile.

In the base game, the colt is the highest-value symbol. At any time, the Colt Strike feature could randomly trigger, adding more of this potentially rewarding symbol to the reels. However, trigger the Super Colt Spins bonus by collecting horseshoe scatters and all colt symbols will be removed from the reels. Instead, you’ll be able to find Super Colts, worth twice the value.

What’s more, additional scatters will expand the grid, up to a possible 6-7-7-7-6 setup with 12,348 ways to win. Naturally, this maximum layout gives players as good a chance as any of hitting the max win.

So, how can we be sure that Play n Go’s slots can actually pay out as much as they say they can? Well, all slots are tested in-house by the developer AND as well as being certified by approved software testing labs before they are released.

This is a requirement laid down by the Gambling Commission, the UK regulator. Billions of spins are simulated on every slot and the results of these tests are used to corroborate the game’s Return to Player and volatility level as well as calculate the maximum possible payout. The figure may in fact be higher but developers round it down to the nearest 1,000 in most cases because it makes it easier to sell.

And what are your chances of hitting that top win? The higher a potential top payout, the more volatile a game tends to be. So while these big rewards are genuinely attainable, the probability is extraordinarily low. It requires millions, sometimes even billions of spins, before we ever see it happen in a real money casino. The odds of hitting the max win in Raging Rex, for example, are roughly one in a billion.

At 50,000x in Kiss Reels of Rock, the highest payout in a Play n Go slot is certainly not to be sniffed at, but it is still some way behind the top prizes offered by other developers I have looked at.

Nolimit City, for instance, famously produces games with some of the biggest potential wins in the industry.
