About This Slot

Following on from Frozen Gems and Perfect Gems, Play n Go’s third Gems slot is Prism of Gems, a slot which adopts the very modern trend for dynamic reel sets, keeping you on your toes with a different row setting on every spin to boost the number of paylines. Prism of Gems offers more that the first two in this series in terms of payout potential and has a splitting cells feature and a much higher variance which makes it the kind of game that will tweak the interest of high risk slots specialists out there.

The backdrop to the dynamic reel set on which Prism … plays out is something like a Victorian Museum or the old Crystal Palace in London. Whilst the reels themselves have an ornate feel with green, gilded iron on them. The reels themselves in the first instance are in a 3,4,4,4,3 set up giving the whole game a pyramid-look which adds to its grandiosity. It’s an attractive set up and eye-catching enough the first time you load up the game.

RTP, Variance and Top Payout

Play n Go’s own volatility rating puts this game at a 9/10 which is very high, so you can expect some pretty testing times when you spin the reels, much frustration and uneven win distributions until the action kicks off. Like most high variance games the free spins round packs much more of a punch than the base game, particularly as the multipliers can stack up quickly as we will explain in a moment. The top payout is a very respectable 30,000x and the RTP is set at a 96.24%, a little over average for Play n Go.

Symbols and Graphics

Prism of Gems has an interesting layout to it – the reels are set on a pyramid-shaped set with 3 rows on the outermost reels and 4 on the 3 middle reels. In fact, on reels 2, 3 and 4 the number of rows can increase to 7 on a single spin. With payouts made for matching symbols on adjacent reels from left to right, regardless of position on the reel, that makes for up to 3,087 paylines active when each of the middle reels is fully expanded.

The low value icons here are the cards, 9 though to Ace. The high value ones are the four colored gemstones themselves – perhaps a nod to the brilliant Bonanza expanding reels game from Big Time Gaming – that pay out between 1.4 and 3x for 5 on a line.

These may seem like small valuations for each icon, but they wins can quickly accumulate when the symbol multiplier displayed above the reel set come into play.

Finally, look out for the wild icon which substiutes for all others to form wins and also triggers cells to split as explained below.

Gameplay and Features

Prism of Gems is not feature-packed, however it does combine cascading wins, free spins and multipliers in an interesting way to give the chance to land some big wins. There is also the use of splitting cells – a feature made successful by No Limit City recently – to help enhance your odds.

Cascading Wins

Once a niche feature made famous by NetEnt’s Gonzo’s Quest slot, Cascading Wins is now ubiquitous in expanding reels games like Big Time Gaming’s Megaways™ series. Play n Go uses it to good affect here too. With each win, winning icons disappear from the reels and are replaced with new ones. This process repeats until no more wins are scored.

 Multiplier Reel feature

The Multiplier Reel is another powerful feature of this game. It sits above the middle 3 reels, displaying a symbol for each reel and a multiplier value as well. Whenever any of those reels is involved in a cascade, then the multiplier value attached increases by 1x up to a maximum of 7x. If a win includes the symbol from the top row, then the relevant multiplier is used. These can accumulate up to 343x (7x7x7).

Split Symbols feature

If a symbol landing on reels 2, 3 or 4 matches the one in the multiplier reel then it automatically splits into 2, which it can do on up to 7 rows. Alternatively, if a wild lands then all icons that land below it on a reel split into two.

Free Spins feature

The Free Spins round in Prims of Gems is triggered by landing 3, 4, or 5 scatters anywhere on the reels on one spin. This gives you 10, 15, or 20 free spins, respectively.

At this point, any multipliers active on the horizontal reel are carried into the bonus round. Importantly, during the spins the multipliers do not re-set between spins – they are cumulative. Furthermore, any additional scatters that land will collect you a further 2 free spins without limit!

Our Verdict

Prism of Gems is a surprisingly good slot. Where often game developers will simply build a clone of previous games when cashing in on a series with a theme, in this instance Play n go have done enough to make Prism stand out from the Frozen and Perfect Gems games. Prism is definitely more volatile and with its progressive use of multipliers and free spins will appeal to the Bonanza generation who enjoy the cumulative effects of landing win cascades with increasing multipliers that can cause some pretty volatile sessions.

And of course, what really makes this one stand-out from its predecessors is the sensational 30,000x top payout.  When you put this together with the typical high risk slots features, Prism of Gems has the potential to produce some epic moments this year and might just show itself to be one of this producers more popular releases.
