How We Review Slot Games

We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.

No Limit City continue to provide the most out-there entertainment from a slot provider. As our recent news article shows there is no sign that they will be letting up in 2022. Legion X arrived in our inbox in November last year and has proved to be another smash hit as we will show in this review. Like Das xBoot before it, it choose military history as its inspiration this time reaching much further back to the period of Roman empirical dominance in Europe. The Legion X was famous it it’s time for being the Emperor Caesar’s most trusted, playing a big part in campaigns fought in the first century BC. It makes for another grim offering from this notoriously eccentric developer who took us through a hellish insane asylum and into the most notorious prison in the US in the space of just a few months in 2021. What ever next?

The action here plays out on 5 reels with a layout unseen before -they come in a 2,3,2,3,2 formation with symbols represented by a roll call of Roman icons including barbarians and legionaries wearing battle dress, including a Stacked Wild legionary who fills the whole reel, bearing a shield and sword. The reels expand as we have come to expect from NLC games from 72 up to a whopping 72,000 in play at any one time and with so many features landing on every spin it’s a wild ride of a slot with a unique blend of theme, narrative and playing style.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 8

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

We’ve come to expect nothing less than high risk slots action at its most bewildering from NLC and that’s just what you get here. The RTP is set at 96.04% which is about average but the variance is set to 10/10 (extreme) and with a 20p minimum bet you can be expecting a tough time of it if you take on the challenge. Don’t expect frequent payouts, this is an ‘all or nothing’ affair with long dry spells but big potential rewards. The top payout of 31,000x stake isn’t as huge as some of the developer’s other slots, but it’s still a sum worth battling for.

Let’s just add though that the odds here of hitting that target are 1 in 36 million! To get even close you will need to land a good run of features including Sticky Infectious Wilds and High Value Multipliers.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 8

Stunning artwork provides the backdrop to this game with beautifully drawn characters and a truly ominous look. On the reels you’ll find 5 high cards designed in stone engravings for the lower payouts, while 5 characters make up the premium symbols. The high cards can pay from 1x to 1.1x stake for 5 of a kind, while the characters can award 1.2x to 2.5x stake for 5 matches.

To trigger a win as usual you need to land three or more matching symbols on adjacent reels running from left to right.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 9

It is becoming a feature of NLC slots that they are bumper-packed with features – overflowing you might say – which makes them quite hard to figure out initially. Legion X is the same – there are lots of moving parts to get to grips with and a few turns on demo mode might help to get your head around things before spending your own money. The good news is most of what follows you’ve probably seen before in other slots by this developer so you might be familiar with it. Here is how it all works …

xNudge Wilds

The legionary xNudge Wild always appears stacked and nudges into full view – these are everywhere in NLC slots from True Grit Redemption to El Paso Gunfight. Every nudge increases the Multiplier by 1x. When multiple xNudge Wilds appear together, their values can be added together.

Infectious Wilds

Another genius NLC invention used in games like Infectious xWays – the Infectious Wilds land on reels 1 and 5, converting all instances of a random symbol into a Wild symbol. If you land 2 Infectious Wilds, all low-paying symbols are converted into Wilds on reels 2,3 and 4.

Want expanding reels? You got it!

xWays symbols appear on reels 1 and 5. These special symbols transform into 2 to 4 instances of the same symbol type, expanding the gaming area and increasing the number of paylines. If you hit 2 xWays symbols at the same time, you’ll trigger Infectious xWays. When this feature is triggered, any symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4 that are the same as the xWays symbol will expand in size.

Combination of xWays and Infectious Wilds

It is possible to combine these two features and turn the middle THREE reels into Infectious xWays with Wilds.

Free Spins Rounds

Onto the all-important free spins rounds and there are four of these.

Legion X Spins

In the first free spins round landing 3 Bonus symbols on reels 2,3 and 4 together gets you 8 Free Spins. Here, reels 1 and 5 are awarded an extra row of symbols each and any Multiplier created by xNudge Wilds is applied. Landing an xWays or Infectious wild symbol at the same time now awards an extra Free Spin. Hitting 2 special symbols on the first and last reel upgrades the feature to an Enhanced Bonus mode.

Legion X Equestris Spins

Landing 3 Bonus symbols at the same time as 2 xWays symbols triggers 10 Free Spins. The first and last reel expand to 4 symbols high, creating a super-cool X shape on the reels. xWays symbols are all sticky for the duration of the round, giving Infectious xWays on EVERY spin.

Legion X Fretensis Spins

Landing 3 Bonus symbols at the same time as 2 Infectious Wilds triggers Fretensis Spins. These work in the same way as Equestris Spins except you also get sticky Infectious Wilds and all low-paying symbols are converted into Wilds for every spin.

Legion X Gemina Spins

Landing 3 Bonus symbols at the same time as 1 Infectious Wild and 1 xWays symbol triggers 10 Free Spins on an expanded gaming screen. You also receive a general Multiplier from xNudge Wilds. The 2 symbols on reels 1 and 5 are sticky, giving more Wilds and Infectious xWays on each spin.

The Final Verdict

Our Score 8.2

All that adds up to another mind-boggling slot game from a unique game developer. At first site it can seem a bit overwhelming, but whilst Legion X is definitely a complex slot, as most NLC games are, you’ll be pleased to hear this isn’t as daunting or sinister as Mental, San Quentin or Tombstone RIP. What it does share is the same high level production values that have led to a striking-looking slot with epic visuals and a soundtrack that wouldn’t be out of place in a Hollywood movie.

The game has some interesting stats attached – whilst the 1 in 36 million top prize win is far-fetched, triggering features can be done more frequently – xNudge Wilds have a 25% chance of landing whilst the expanding reels xWays comes in at close to a 10% hit rate. So even in the base game you will experience fairly regular wilds and reel expansions to keep you engaged.

Then, of the free spins rounds the best we found to be the Gemina version – its where you get all features at their most enhanced levels – progressive multipliers, potentially maxed out win ways and wilds filling the middle reels. It will be a rare treat to get all this happening at once due to the trademark extreme volatility gameplay that can eat away at your bankroll but if you’re up for the challenge, Legion X is another strong offering from the bad boy developer of the online slot world.

Fancy going into battle? We thought you would!
