A Dramatic Slot Game Invoking Warrior Honour and Glorious Death!

Ancient Roman history is not a new area of inspiration for online slot games but this being Nolimit City, it gets a different kind of treatment here. Legion X was Caesar’s most trusted legion from the Roman Imperial Army and the narrative and visuals invoke a sense of the warrior’s honour and epic battles to the death. Heavy swords are wielded across the reels and blood-stained warrior masks appear on the paytable whilst the max payout has been christened ‘No Strength, Only Honour!’

In terms of atmosphere the closest I can think of to Legion X would be Hacksaw’s Gladiator Legends, though that is a bloodier affair than this one. What is clear is that NLC have done a great job of creating a sombre mood to set you up to do battle with another toweringly tough slot. Perhaps my favourite part is the soundtrack with battle cries throughout and a cinematic score that wouldn’t look out of place in a Hollywood blockbuster.

RTP and Variance

It’s important to know that most Nolimit City slots have more than one RTP setting. It’s at your casinos discretion which setting to run the game on. In the case of Legion X there are 2 available RTPs: 96.04% or 94.04%. It is clearly preferable to play the game at the higher RTP so I checked out a few popular slot sites to find out which setting they use.

Moving onto variance, we all know that Nolimit City are specialists in super-volatile slots and Legion X is no exception. According to the game profile on their own site, this is an ‘Extreme’ variance game with a 10/10 rating for volatility. So, beware, it can burn you very quickly. But it can also produce those unexpected win sequences in the free spins round and kick out some incredible wins too.

Maximum Win

The maximum payout for Legion X is a huge 31,000x. That is some way short of NLC’s highest paying slots, but still good going. This win is called, ‘No Strength, Only Honour’. Giving it a name is something this studio does on some of their slots to add drama to the event of hitting the max!

NLC usefully publish the odds of hitting maximum wins on their site and for this game the odds of that 31,000x payout are around 1 in 36 million spins!  That might sound far-fetched but consider that this popular studio’s slots are being spun by players across the globe every day and for that reason they regularly do pay out top prizes. Symbols and Paytable

Legion X uses a slightly unusual reel and row layout – something we see from Nolimit City from time to time. There are 5 reels but the rows change like this: 2-3-2-3-2. And as this is a Win Ways slot that gives you 72 win ways per spin. But, as we will find out, this number will increase in the free spins rounds as the 2 row reels can increase to 3 high.

Win Ways means that wins are triggered by landing 3 or more identical symbols on adjacent reels from left to right regardless of their row position. Personally, I prefer this set up as its easy to follow your wins and appears to provide more chances to trigger pay outs than traditional paylines.

The paytable looks unimpressive at first glance. However, this is often the case with NLC slots that have many features as the game relies on wilds, expanders and free spins to drive the big payouts rather than basic symbol value.

So don’t be put off by these numbers

Low payers are the cards, 10 through to Ace. These are valued at between 0.1x for 3 10s up to 1.1x for 5 Aces. The premiums are the masked warriors, valued at from 0.2x for 3 with a goats head, up to 2.5x for 5 with a traditional soldier’s mask.

Legion X brings together a few classic NLC features including xNudge Wilds, Infectious Wilds and xWays. What I love about these games is that the features don’t just work on their own – they can feed off each other to become more powerful. Part of the excitement of playing is figuring out what drives the best moments and keeping your eyes peeled for those features to drop.

xNudge Wilds Bring Up Multipliers

Let’s start with the xNudge Wilds. This is a Wild Stack that nudges down or up until it is fully visible. With each nudge a multiplier value increases by 1x, which you can see in the screenshot below. You’ll find this in other NLC games like True Grit Redemption to El Paso Gunfight.

The multiplier is only valid of course when a win passes through the Wild stack. But when two or more xNudge Wilds appear together then their values are added together before being applied.

Infectious Wilds Spread Across The Reels

Infectious Wilds only land on reels 1 and 5. When they do, they convert all instances of a random symbol into a Wild symbol. That’s nice, but I prefer the second part of this feature. If you land TWO Infectious Wilds on one spin then ALL low-paying symbols are converted into Wilds on reels 2, 3 and 4.

xWays Bring Up More Win Ways

Perhaps one of NLC’s best known features is the xWays. This is a way of adding more Win Ways on a spin. These symbols land with a big X on reels 1 and 5. When they do, they transform into 2 to 4 instances of the same pay symbol, expanding the reels as they do.

And once again, there is an enhanced version of this feature. If you hit 2 xWays symbols at the same time, you’ll trigger Infectious xWays. When this feature is triggered, any symbols on reels 2, 3 and 4 that are the same as the xWays symbol will expand in size as well.

It is possible to combine these 2 features and turn all low payers on the middle three reels into Wilds whilst Infectious xWays expands symbols on those reels too.

As well as these features you also get FOUR Free Spins rounds. What I like here is that the harder a level is to unlock, the better the deal when you get there. But it’s not easy, and I should warn you, it’s very frustrating trying to unlock the higher free spins levels.

You need to land THREE bonus symbols in the middle 3 reels to trigger this round as well as 2 xWays symbols at the same time to trigger this one.

Now you get 10 spins with the 1^st and 5^th reels expanded to FOUR rows high. And you get the same win multiplier increasing with xNudge Wilds as you see in the Legion X Spins. BUT now, xWays symbols are always sticky when they land, triggering Infectious xWays on each spin.

You need to land THREE bonus symbols in the middle 3 reels to trigger this round as well as 2 Infectious Wild symbols at the same time to trigger this one.

However, this time it is the Infectious Wild that stays sticky throughout. That means every low payer on the middle reels will turn Wild on every spin once Infectious Wilds land.

Legion X Gemina Spins – 10 Spins With Sticky Infectious Wilds AND xWays

This is the holy grail but it requires you to land THREE bonus symbols on the middle reels plus one each of the Infectious Wild and xWays symbols on the outer reels at the same time.

Now, you play with 10 spins on extended 4 rows on the 1^st and 5^th reels. The win multiplier is effected by the xNudge Wild in the same way. And, both Infectious Wilds and xWays symbols remain sticky throughout the round. That converts all low payers on the middle reels to wilds whilst also expanding symbols that match the xWays that landed too.

The Final Verdict

Legion X has the qualities of a very good high variance game using a similar theme to slots like 300 Shields and Gladiator Legends. The production is of a very high quality and the game is thick with atmosphere. It also utilises some of Nolimit City’s best creations to date in the xWays and Infectious Wild features, all rounded off with a very enticing maximum win and reasonable RTP, at least at the optimum setting.

A word of warning should be sounded here however. This is an NLC game that can quickly get confusing. I found myself returning to the paytable several times to be sure that I was looking out for the right symbols, mainly because they all look very similar, but also because they rarely dropped. Overall this meant that the Legion X felt a bit dry at times, despite it dramatic atmosphere. That said, if the 200 test spins had gone my way and I’d had more luck I may have felt differently.

One thing that will attract NLC fans for sure is the four bonus rounds, each with their own distinct configurations. Clearly the Legion X Gemina Spins with sticky xWays AND Infectious Wilds is your best chance of landing the biggest wins and its that one that generates most excitement when checking through the game rules. But it will be a very tough road to glory, so be prepared for an epic battle!
