How We Review Slot GamesWe test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.
True Grit Redemption is another dark, Western slot from Nolimit City with 3 interacting reel sets, and 240 Win Ways that grow to many more when Splits, xWays and unlocking positions come into play. The game is absolutely stacked with NLC’s best features including xNudge Wild Multipliers, Infectious xWays and Transformers as well. Landing 2, 3 or 4 scatters opens up extra spaces on the reels and eventually 2 free spins rounds with the entire reel set open and a Sticky Wild Multiplier in play in the bottom right corner on each spin.
True Grit Redemption is a superb experience with a top win of 22,220x. Spins start from 20p.

Testing Notes: Here’s What Happened When We Played True Grit Redemption
IMPORTANT: To give you an accurate assessment of the games we review our writers play 200 spins. Whilst this is a useful tool to help us review games and to give an example of what might happen when you play, keep in mind that 200 spins is only a very small sample and cannot be used to accurately predict what might happen over another 200 spins. The outcome of all slots play is always random.
Boom Or Bust? Our Session By The Numbers
I played 200 spins on True Grit Redemption for free at Casumo Casino to test the game and this is what happened.
- Stake Size: £1
- Start balance: £10,000
- End balance: £9,995.25
- Biggest Win: 42.75x
- Free Spins: 1
- Session Time: 15 minute 17 seconds
Playing True Grit Redemption is always a memorable experience because despite its tough variance there always seems to be something going on, even if those things are only very small wins.
Close to the end of my 200 spins I was fortunate to unlock the Torture Spins and whilst this is not the holy grail of Dead Spins, it still delivered some good moments and kicked out a 42.75x win at the end (you can see that win in the screenshot). That was thanks to plenty of wilds forming from symbol matches and the odd splitting symbol. An xNudge Wild dropped once but failed to bring up any wins and there were NO xWays or Infectious xWays to be seen at all. This is not an uncommon experience when playing True Grit and it has been said that you can spin for hours and never see some of those features.

Theme & Design
Our Score 10
A Superb Cinematic Production With Tons of Atmosphere
I love the feel of this game. To my mind, True Grit Redemption is Nolimit City’s most cinematic slot to date. Because of it’s dimly lit wintry backdrop, moustachioed main man and hints at narratives of revenge, it has echoes of There Will Be Blood, Tarantino’s Hateful Eight, and even The Revenant in its production.
But whatever the inspiration, what is for sure is that this is a Western slot like no other. I certainly don’t recall one that is set in a snowy, hillside town at night, gas lanterns flickering and a ‘Point Of No Return’ signpost leaning up against the reels. Or one with such an off-kilter reel set for that matter. But I will come onto that shortly.
For first timers, once you’ve loaded up and browsed the lengthy rules page (advised!) True Grit reveals itself to be a surprisingly smooth-flowing slot in which the beguiling soundtrack is interspersed with the rattle and thud of reels and occasional pistol shots when Scatters land. It’s really atmospheric, absorbing and fully deserving of a 10/10 here!
RTP and Variance
Our Score 8
What is RTP?RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next. Read more here.
What is Variance?Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.
Many Nolimit City slots have more than one RTP. That is the case with True Grit Redemption as well which has 2 – 96.11% or 94.04%. Which you play at will be at the discretion of your casino. Whilst there is not much difference between these 2 settings, it is always preferable to play at the higher level. I checked out 5 popular online slot sites to see which they were using. This is what I found:
- All British Casino (L and L Europe) – 96.11% RTP
- MrQ (Independent) – 96.11% RTP
- Casumo (independent) – 94.04% RTP
- Barz Casino (White Hat Gaming) – 94.04% RTP
- Dream Vegas (White Hat Gaming) – 94.04% RTP
It’s not uncommon for operators to choose the lower settings as a few have here. If RTP is a big concern for you over other factors when choosing your slot site then I recommend MrQ or All British Casino from our list.
And of course, True Grit Redemption is super-high variance game. We expect nothing else from Nolimit City. On their own website they rate the game as a 10/10, or Extreme Volatility. So be ready for a rough ride with the holy grail of those exraordinary win sequences only there for the lucky few.
Our Score 9
What Is Maximum Win?Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.
The top payout in this game is 20,220x which is high, but well short of the NLC games with the highest max wins. Nevertheless, it’s not an amount to turn down!
One of the reasons I love this studio is that they are transparent on odds and you can see on their game profile page that the chances of hitting that number are 1 in 6 million spins on average. Tough ask? Consider that many 100s, or even 1,000s of players are spinning NLC games daily so those big payouts do come round every once in a while.

Symbols and Paytable
Our Score 9
NLC Find Lots Of Exciting New Ways To Open Up Reel Space and Win Ways
Let’s start with the basics. This is a Win Ways game. That means you only need to land identical symbols on adjacent reels from left to right to score a win. The row position doesn’t matter, only that the reels are adjacent. That creates 240 win ways per spin, but as I will explain, that number increases dramatically when you start opening up previously-locked positions and splitting rows.
Like many NLC games, True Grit has an unusual reel configuration and its no exaggeration to say that it is confusing as hell to begin with. The best way to get to grips with it is to play in demo mode a few times and watch what happens.
Here is how it works.
There are 6 main reels, each 3 rows high. Then, there is an extra 1×3 reel set sitting on top of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th reels, which spins horizontally. This reel holds only character and wild symbols and will affect the spaces underneath it.
On the right-hand side of the main reel set is an area of locked off positions in a diagonal shape. It stays locked for much of the game but can be opened by landing 1, 2, 3 or 4 scatters. This opens up 4, 3, 2 then the last locked position. You can see those in this screenshot.
There are 4 locked positions on the bottom row which contain their own 1×4 reel that spins horizontally. The first 3 positions will show you character and special symbols, whilst the one in the far right will always show a Sticky Wild with a Multiplier.
That is the reel configuration. It takes some getting used to. But quickly starts to make sense when you have played a few spins.
As for the paytable, you won’t be writing home about the symbol values, because they are very low. But once again, the point here isn’t scoring big standard payline wins. It’s about building big payouts from the numerous features on offer.
The low value symbols are the cards, 10 through to Ace. These are valued at from 0.05x for 3 10s up to 0.75x for 6 Aces. Premiums are represented by the Wild West characters: a man with a big moustache, a woman holding a smoking pistol, a man wearing a cowboy hat holding two pistols, a grinning man cradling a shotgun, and a bald man with an eye-patch.
These are valued at from 0.3x for the eye-patch man up to 1.75x for the man with the big moustache.
But the apex of the paytable, and the one to look out for, is the Grit Girl who is worth 25x for 3 and 500x for 4.
You will also come across wilds in the game which substitute for all other symbols to create winning lines.

A Slot That Is Stacked With Powerful Features To Enhance Your Wins
If you are still with me, then well done. And be prepared because there is much more to come! NLC packed out True Grit Redemption with versions of most of their trademark features. Understanding how they come together is critical to enjoying the experience of this game.
Cascades Follow Every Win
True Grit is a Cascading Wins game. So, after every win the winning symbols are removed and replaced with new ones. Another win? The process repeats. And so on, until no more wins occur.
Match Symbols On The Top and Bottom Reel Sets For Wilds
That top reel set I talked about is going to help you add wilds to the reels. When a character on a top reel matches one on the reels anywhere beneath, that character turns into a Wild on both reel sets. That helps you to complete win ways.
xNudge Wilds Build Multipliers
The classic NLC xNudge Wilds are stacked wilds that land then nudge up until they are in full view. Each nudge increases their multiplier by 1x, and a further 1x each time they nudge over a wild or split wild.
You’ve seen this before but this time around NLC have added a nice little exra: if the wild is not used in a win then it folds back to its original position then nudges back up in the subsequent cascade, increases its multiplier further.
If you are lucky enough to have more than one xNudge Wild on a line, they will add together before being applied to the win.
Increase The Win Ways With xWays and Infectious xWays
xWays and Split Symbols are NLC’s way of creating reel expansion and additional paylines in a dynamic fashion just like Megaways™. These are a little more complicated however (surprised?!).
Here is how they work.
xWays can land anywhere except on the top reel, while Infectious xWays land on the bottom reel. xWays turn into 2 or 3 instances of a symbol, which increases the win ways. Infectious xWays impact elsewhere on the reels – they reveal 2 symbols, which cause all other symbols of this type to expand.
Split Entire Reels With Split Symbols
Another interesting way to add Win Ways is using the Split Symbol which appears only on the bottom reel. It splits, so doubles, all symbols on the main reel directly above it. A reel can split twice on one spin. Only the the Grit Girl does not split. Instead, her Multiplier value doubles.
Transform Entire Groups of Symbols
If that wasn’t making your head spin, how about this. There is a ‘Transform’ symbol that will transform all low value symbols into the same low value symbol, or all premium symbols into the same premium symbol. For example, 10, J, Q, K and Ace all become Aces!
What About The Grit Girl?
Ok, so we introduced the high-paying Grit Girl earlier. She appears only on reels 1 to 4 on the main reel set and pays as soon as she is visible on 3 or more reels at 25x for 3 and 500x for 4.
Now, remember that Sticky Wild that sits in the bottom right corner? Locked except when 4 scatters land? Well, whether locked or not, that sticky wild’s multiplier is going to be applied to the win from the Grit Girl.
Free Spins Opens Up The Grid
Onto the two free spins rounds, and you will need to land either 3 or 4 scatters on the main reel set to unlock these.
3 Scatters gets you 8 Torture Spins and any split scatters earn you an extra spin on top. Now, all locked positions on the main reel set are opened up immediately and stay open for the full round. Only the bottom right position and the Sticky Wild Multiplier are locked, though they still apply to the Grit Girl.
And, if you land another scatter during Free Spins then you will be upgraded to Dead Spins where you get 2 more spins, and another extra one for every split scatter that triggered the bonus.
Dead Spins is the same as Torture Spins. However, now ALL positions including the bottom right Sticky Wild Multiplier are opened up for the duration.
The Final Verdict
Firstly, I should say that writing (or reading) about True Grit Redemption is a lot trickier than actually playing the game. Whilst, to learn more about it I will always recommend to players new to this slot that they demo it for at least 100 spins, probably 200, before turning to real play, it is easier to follow than you might think. This is because whilst there are a lot of features, they don’t all land at once, so it’s easy to follow what is happening spin by spin.
Most of the time you will be looking out for scatters to unlock the extra positions on the reels or hopefully bring up the free spins round. The latter is only going to happen after 214 spins on average, but 1 or 2 scatters occur more regularly to keep things interesting. In my experience the wilds from matching symbols on top and middle reel sets is more frequent still, dropping every 4 to 5 spins. All other features seem more unpredictable and sporadic, but that just makes it more exciting when they do drop. xWays and Infectious xWays, as well as Splits, are the pick of the bunch, but really any combination of 2 or 3 can deliver some magical moments.
To sum up, I found that True Grit is a game that reveals more of itself the more you play. It is one that requires patience and time to really get to know it and enjoy the experience. That is why I suggest a low stake to stretch your balance and give yourself the best shot at hitting the Dead Spins feature round before you burn up. That’s where the biggest hits are going to drop, and getting close to that 22,220x becomes a possibility.

Useful Tips When Playing True Grit Redemption
Remember, online slots are games of chance, there is NO strategy that can improve your odds of winning. However, reading our review and following these tips will help you get the most out of your time playing this slot game.
1. Play In Demo Mode First
This is one of NLCs more complex slots due to the reel configuration and number of features. A short time playing in demo mode – 100 spins, say – can help you to get to grips with it before you part with your cash.
2. Don’t Expect To See All The Features
You can play True Grit until the cows come home and you may still not see an xWays or an xNudge. Don’t worry if you don’t, they arrive eventually! Make the most of the wilds that regularly appear instead.
3. Set A Low Stake
It’s always advisable with a high risk slot like this to set a lower stake than you might do normally to stretch your balance over more spins. The minimum is 20p which is right for many players.
4. Play At One Of Our Recommended Slot Sites
I always recommend players to use the sites on this page because they are licensed in the UK so they are fair, safe and secure. They also offer the full range of responsible gambling tools to manage your spend.
