Testing Notes: Here’s What Happened When We Played D-Day

IMPORTANT: To give you an accurate assessment of the games we review our writers play 200 spins. Whilst this is a useful tool to help us review games and to give an example of what might happen when you play, keep in mind that 200 spins is only a very small sample and cannot be used to accurately predict what might happen over another 200 spins. The outcome of all slots play is always random.

Boom Or Bust? Our Session By The Numbers

I played 350 spins D-Day in test prior to its release. This is what happened.

  • Stake Size: £1
  • Start balance: £10,000
  • End balance: £9,989.40
  • Hit Rate: 17% (60 winning spins in 350)
  • Biggest Win: 141x
  • Free Spins Round: 2

I extended the usual 200 spin test session to 350 as it was a fun game with a lot going on.

Let’s start with the base game. The hit rate I experienced for this phase was just 17% which is less than NLC advertise on their game profile page on the fan site which states 21.73%. That’s just a reminder that this is a highly volatile slot so the numbers won’t always follow what you expect, and 350 spins is a very small test sample in the big picture. But keep in mind a run of 10 or more spins with no payout is not that uncommon, though once in 5 or 6 is the norm.

A Small Win in D Day
A small win in D Day in testing

I saw every feature at least once and they all look fantastic. Animations are great, and if you’re into your war games, you’ll love the visuals and sounds. Panzer Tanks were most common, appearing 5 times, bringing up wins of 16.8x and 3.6x. The Bombers showed up twice, once with a 19.8x win, and the Howitzers 3 times, once triggering an 11.75x win. Stukas splitting the reels are real WW2 war movie stuff, and I saw those twice, but without any wins unfortunately.

Incidentally, if you are confused about which feature is playing out, check the little notepad at the top left of the reels which lists each one. The feature is highlighted in the list when it is activated.

Overall, I thought the base game was fun, and the ‘Extreme’ volatility NLC attribute to the game is offset by regular wins and features to keep you engaged.

140.58 win in D Day
On the way to a 141x win in the free spins round

The free spins round triggered twice, which is good for 350 spins. The fan site says 1 in 206 spins on average. The first time brought up just a 6.1x win, but the second produced the best return of the session at 141x. Most of that came from one spin where the Panzas and Stukas combined. And this is where D-Day can really deliver in my opinion as combinations of features work together.

As far as RTP goes, overall I was £10.60 down for the session, but it was great entertainment with the usual mix of drama and off-beat humour we associate with NLC.

What We Liked

  • Lots of battle animations like bombs and tanks that herald the features
  • Huge 55,555x maximum win
  • Extreme volatility for fans of high variance slots
  • Atomic wild multipliers are as big as 100x

What We Didn't like

  • If you don't like war, you won't like this game!
  • Low RTP at some slot sites

What Our Reviewer Says ...

"Another incendiary slot from NLC whose dark theme and explosive gameplay will please their fans and win more too!"

Overall Score: 8.6

Theme & Design

Our Score 9

Lots of Noise, Guns, Bombs and Tanks In This Wild Wartime Slot

If you enjoyed the design style of NLC’s Das X-Boot and Pearl Harbour then you’ll love how D Day looks. It has the same dark, claustrophobic feel and the gameplay is interspersed with lots of combat events like Stuka bombers and Panza tanks randomly appearing over the reels to trigger features. The backdrop is the war table in a bunker somewhere where two officers discuss strategy whilst peering over a map, all under a blood red light. It’s what NLC do best, combining terrific atmosphere around dark themes.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 8

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

There are FOUR available RTP settings for this game – 96.12%, 94.12%, 92.12% and 87.10%. Make sure your casino is running the game at the optimum RTP setting by hitting the hamburger menu button to the bottom left of the screen then scrolling through until you see RTP. Most slot sites in the UK run NLC games at 94% or higher. I have found that MrQ from Lindar Media and Barz Casino from White Hat Gaming consistently choose the top RTP so I recommend playing there.

The volatility level here is described as EXTREME by NLC so you know what to expect. That is also reflected in the huge 55,555x max win. It will be a tough play, but crazy combinations of wild multipliers across the reels can potentially trigger some huge payouts.

Maximum Win

Our Score 9

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

The top payout in D Day slot is 55,555x which is excellent, even for a Nolimit City slot which boast some of the highest max wins found anywhere. NLC have named this Mission Accomplished. If a spin sequence triggers a win greater than this number then the payout is rounded down and the game round ends.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 8

The reel set up in Day is slightly unusual with 5 reels with a 3-4-5-4-3 christmas tree row configuration.  It is a win ways set up so you only need to land identical symbols on adjacent reels, regardless of the row, from left to right, starting at the left most reel, to score a win.

D Day Paytable
The paytable in D Day with 2x for 5 top paying Howitzers

Symbol values are small, which is not uncommon for NLC slots, but there are 750 win ways to start before we even get into splits, plus lots of features that add wilds to the grid to increase the odds of win ways.

Low payers are the solidiers – Commando, Foot Soldier, Anti-Air and Fighter Pilot. These are valued at from 0.1x for 3 Commandos up to 0.45x for 5 Fighter Pilots. The premiums are the Panzer, Bomber, Stuka and Howitzer, valued at from 0.2x for 3 Panzers up to 2x for 5 Howitzers.

There are also Wilds that substitute for all pay symbols to complete win ways but have no pay value of their own.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 9

In D Day there are five features that trigger at random in the base game and three free spins rounds available if you land enough scatters.  Here is how that all works.

Atomic Wild

These random wilds are powerful symbols that appear at any time in this game with a multiplier value of 10x, 20x, 30x, 50x or 100x. If the position chosen for the wild is already taken, then a 1x is added to the multiplier.

This one always triggers before any other feature.

Bomber

Bombers are powerful too. When their feature triggers, then between 2 and 5 bomber planes will appear, turning all the symbols on the reel they appear on into wilds. Any wilds already showing on a reel will have a 1x multiplier added to them.

But watch out for the anti-air symbol which will block the bombers from adding wilds below their position.

Stuka

Stukas will zip over the reels in a diagonal direction from left to right or right to left, splitting all pay symbols they pass over and doubling their size.

You can have up to SEVEN Stukas flying over on one spin.

Panzer

When the Panzer feature triggers then these tanks appear on between 2 and 5 rows, with one tank per row. They transform all low paying symbols, except for the foot soldiers, into Wilds.

And once again, where a wild already exists on a row, then it will have a 1x multiplier added to it.

Howitzers

Watch out for these bombs which will turn between 1 and 7 pay symbols into wilds when the feature is triggered. Commandos and wilds are not included.

NOTE: These features trigger at random but you can also trigger one by landing 2 Scatters at any point in the game. If one of those scatters lands on the 5th reel, then the Atomic Wild feature is chosen.

THREE Free Spins Rounds

NOTE: The average number of spins required to trigger the free spins round is 206.

There are no less than THREE free spins round, each with a progressively better configuration.

Neptune Free Spins – 3 scatters are required to unlock Neptune free spins. When it starts, there is a pick me game where you 2 out of the 5 features are revealed. These are GUARANTEED to trigger at least once during your spins.

NOTE: If one of your triggering scatters landed on reel 5 then it Atomic Wild is activated for the Neptune spins and you only get ONE pick.

Invasion Free Spins – 4 scatters are required to unlock Invasion free spins. This time, you get 3 picks and 3 of the 5 features are GUARANTEED to trigger at least once during the round.

NOTE: If one of your triggering scatters landed on reel 5 then it Atomic Wild is activated for the Neptune spins and you only get TWO picks.

Overlord Free Spins – 5 scatters are required to unlock Overlord free spins. In this instance, you will get 3 picks to reveal features that are GUARANTEED to trigger at least once during the round. And the Atomic Wilds is automatically added into the mix.

The Final Verdict

Fans of NLC can look forward to another thrilling game when D Day is released on 13th February 2024. Some slots by this studio can be overwhelmingly complicated but in my opinion they have found a good balance this time with enough features to make the gameplay compelling whilst still being easy to follow. The animations that accompany each feature are top class whilst the chance to land runs of multiplier wilds, symbol splits and transformations will have the potential to turn any session epic! My test session showed this to be a very volatile slot but that is exactly as we expect from NLC and with that 55,555x top win their reputation as the masters of high variance action remains.

Useful Tips When Playing D-Day

Remember, online slots are games of chance, there is NO strategy that can improve your odds of winning. However, reading our review and following these tips will help you get the most out of your time playing this slot game.

1. Check The RTP Setting Before You Play

Most UK sites will run this game at one of the top 2 RTP settings. However, some may choose the lowest rate of 87.10%. I have seen that at some Aspire Global Casinos. So, check the RTP before you spend money to be sure you are getting good value.

2. Watch Out For Those Atomic Wilds

The Atomic wilds are one of the best feature in the game. They don’t drop that often by when they do, thanks to the big multipliers, they can give your wins a big boost.

3. Play The Game In Demo Mode First

As with most NLC slots there is a lot going on here so it is worth playing the game in demo mode before you spend any money to be sure you understand all the features. Then you will enjoy the real play experience much more.

4. Only Play At Licensed Slot Sites

I recommend the sites on this page because they are licensed by the UK Gambling Commission which means that they operate under strict UK law making them fair, safe and secure. Never play at unlicensed sites.
