How We Review Slot Games

We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.

Devil’s Crossroad is a thrilling new slot from Nolimit City with a tongue-in-cheek satanic theme and high variance. It plays out on a unique reel set with four sections and a Devil Wild position in the middle. Landing symbols adjacent to the Devil Wild triggers features. Wilds that land there transform other symbols into wilds. Scatters landing there cause symbols to disappear off the reels triggering tumbles and progressive multiplier upgrades. There is also a free spins round where filling reels with coins sets up Deadly Sins-themed extras.

This looks like another totally awesome slot form NLC. It’s top payout is 13,180x and the game comes out on 9th January 2024.

Testing Notes: Here’s What Happened When We Played Devil’s Crossroad

IMPORTANT: To give you an accurate assessment of the games we review our writers play 200 spins. Whilst this is a useful tool to help us review games and to give an example of what might happen when you play, keep in mind that 200 spins is only a very small sample and cannot be used to accurately predict what might happen over another 200 spins. The outcome of all slots play is always random.

Boom Or Bust? Our Session By The Numbers

I played 300 spins on Devil’s Crossroad for free at Casumo Casino to test the game and this is what happened.

  • Stake Size: £1
  • Start balance: £10,000
  • End balance: £9,912.90
  • Hit Rate: 18.6% (56 winning spins in 300)
  • Biggest Win: 17.35x
  • Free Spins Round: 0
  • Session Time: 25 minutes 44 seconds

Whilst theoretically a simple idea, in testing the Crosslink Ways mechanic was harder to follow that a simple 6-reel slot. Whilst it is straight-forward enough to see how a win is formed in each cross section, the next part, where symbols are removed from other sections and multipliers grow, is harder to pick out. So I just sat back and let the game do its thing. Over time I guess you would start to see the patterns better.

In the end I extended the session from the normal 200 spins to 300 to see if I could crack the bonus round but still no joy. On their fan page, NLC say it drops once in every 189 spins but not for me! In fact, overall this was a tough play, producing a hit rate of just 18.6%, just below the advertised 21.73%, also from the NLC fan page. Nevertheless, the unique Crosslink Ways mechanic is interesting and the theme and humour is compelling. When you score a big win an animation of the devils handing you money plays out. Watch closely as your on-screen hand ages as you take the deal!

Watch your on-screen hand shrivel as you take the money from the devil!

I’ll come back to this game because its stands out a mile from other new slots this month but I’ll tread carefully as it was a tight as any NLC game I have played .

What Our Reviewer Says ...

"Nolimit City are starting 2024 in style with this unique game that sacrifices the normally sky high max win but offsets that loss with totally unique and innovative gameplay"

Overall Score: 8.6

Theme & Design

Our Score 9

Do A Deal With The Devil And Find Out …

You instantly know that you are in an NLC game when Devil’s Crossroad loads up. As well as the comic-book artwork style, the relentless twang of the soundtrack, not unlike True Grit Redemption, will please fans of this studio. Now, whilst the theme is Satantic, don’t expect a horror-fest. The tone is humorous and modern with a besuited devil surrounded by a curiously random selection of individuals – gamers, wannabe pop stars, businessmen and influencer – all seeking to do a deal and get rich quick no-doubt.

Devil’s Crossroad – made a deal with the devil at your peril

In the base game the game area is set within a gaping chasm in the asphalt of a highway, it’s edges surrounded by huge teeth. If you are lucky enough to be invited into the bonus round you’ll be taken into ‘My Lucy’’s lair where a weird, 4-eyed cat oversees a new game board.

In short, the theme and design are fun and maintain NLC’s interest in the darker side of human nature.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 8

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

Devil’s Crossroad has four possible RTP settings – 96.06%, 94.03%, 92.07% and 87.05%. Your casino will choose which to run the game at when they put it live. You do NOT want to be playing at less than 96.06% if possible. I verified the RTP at several slot sites when writing this review and only found it running at 96.06% at MrQ from Lindar Media. I recommend playing there for the best return on your wagering.

Elsewhere, you can check the RTP on the Game Rules section under the game information screen once you load up the slot.

NLC have labelled this as a high volatility slot. No surprises there! However, it isn’t ‘extreme’ or ‘intense’ volatility – two other terms they regularly use. So, perhaps it is a little less volatile than other games on their roster. Whatever, expect an uneven win distribution and the potential to drop the odd huge payout too.

Maximum Win

Our Score 8

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

The maximum payout in Devil’s Crossroad is 13,180x. By this studio’s standards that isn’t that big, but it is still an enticing number to aim for. Like many NLC slots, the top payout has a name assigned to it. It’s called, Debt To Be Paid – any win over this amount is downgraded to the maximum of 13,180x.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 9

Perhaps the most interesting part of this game is the reel configuration that is totally unlike a standard slot set up. It has been seen before in the bonus round of another NLC slot, Gluttony, but not as part of the main base game.

The game area is divided into four sections, each with four symbols, and each of which meets the others in the middle where a Devil Wild symbol permanently sits. The system of winning ways is called Crosslink Ways. Wins are triggered when 3 or more identical symbols land on adjacent positions in any of the four sections of the game area, with the Devil Wild in the centre available to help this process.

Devil's Crossroad Paytable
The paytable with 10x for 5 top premiums

The paytable offers good value with 10 pay symbols available. There are 5 low values ones – 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. These are valued at from 0.1x for 3 10s up to 1.2x for 5 Aces. The premiums are the characters – influencer, gamer, muscle man, pop star and businessman. These are valued at from 0.5x for 3 influencers up to 10x for 5 of the businessman.

The Devil Wild is a permanent fixture in the middle position, substituting for any pay symbol to complete a win way. Others wilds may randomly appear at any time as we will find out in the next section.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 9

The gameplay is actually quite simple, though it will take a while to get used to the reel configuration.

There are the features to look out for.

Avalanche Wins

The game has an avalanche wins mechanic where winning symbols are removed from the reels, causing remaining ones to fall towards the Devil Wild in the middle whilst new symbols fill the spaces they leave behind.

Cross Wilds Transform At Random

Where a symbol is adjacent to the Devil Wild in the middle position it can randomly become a Wild. This can happen at any time so watch out for it.

Cross Multipliers Are Progressive

With the reels divided into four, when a win triggers on one section, matching symbols on another section are removed if they aren’t forming part of a win themselves. This creates another tumble and the chance to score more wins. At the same time, for each symbol removed from a section, a progressive multiplier applied to wins in that section increases by 1x.

Each section of the cross has it’s own multiplier

Scatters Cause Further Tumbles

Another fascinating feature of the gameplay is triggered by the scatter. These symbols only land on the middle row or reel of each section of the reel set. If they land on the position adjacent to our Devil Wild then the symbols in their section are deactivated AND the same symbols in other sections of the reel set are removed and can’t drop in the following tumbles.

As symbols are removed in this way, so the progressive multiplier for the section they are removed from increases by 1x.

Redemption Spins With Deadly Sins Features

The highlight of the show is the Redemption Spins feature, a free spins round with a difference … of course!

You need 4 scatters to land at once to trigger the round. Now, only coins or blanks are going to land on the reels, each with a multiplier value. You get 3 spins, and provided a coin lands, the spins total will re-set to 3. If only blanks land, then you lose a spin.

The key is to try to fill each reel with coins. Once you’ve done this, a new phase starts where a feature is applied to the full column for all remaining spins. Each feature is themed on a Deadly Sin.

  • Gluttony – a new value is added to all coins on the reel.
  • Wrath – multiplies all coin values on the reel by one randomly chosen coin value.
  • Lust – progresses one step towards upgrading the round.
  • Greed – one coin is chosen from the reel and all other coin values on the reel are added to it.
  • Envy – one coin is chosen to take the value of the highest value coin currently on the reels.
  • Pride – one coin is chosen and its value is added to all other coins on its reel.

The Final Verdict

Devil’s Crossroad represents an intriguing start to 2024 for Nolimit City. The Crosslink Ways mechanic shows that there is plenty of room for innovation in the online slots world and whilst tricky to follow at first, I’m sure that it can become hugely popular as well as opening the door for many more game formats like it. Whilst NLC fans may be a little disappointed at the relatively (by their standards) low max win potential, the unique gameplay and distinctive theme and humour will make this another hugely popular slot from a studio who continue to lead the pack.

Useful Tips When Playing Devil’s Crossroad

Remember, online slots are games of chance, there is NO strategy that can improve your odds of winning. However, reading our review and following these tips will help you get the most out of your time playing this slot game.

1. Play In Demo Mode First

I recommend playing this slot in demo mode before spending any of your own money on it It can take a while to get used to the Crosslink Ways system and it will feel confusing at first.

2. Choose A Low Stake

This is a volatile slot that proved very tight in testing with no sight of the bonus round in 300 spins. Now, that may have been unlucky but it shows how things can play out. Therefore I recommend a low starting stake to stretch your balance as you seek out those free spins.

3. Watch Out For The Progressive Multipliers

In testing the best win came when an 8x and two 5x multipliers were in play at the same time from one spin. You can drive up these multipliers through the Avalanches so keep an eye on them growing when a nice win sequence is playing out.

4. Only Play At Licensed UK Slot Sites

We carefully select the slot sites on our review pages because they are licensed by the UK Gambling Commission and adhere to strict regulations on fairness, security and safety. Never play at unlicensed sites.
