How We Review Slot Games

We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.

The theme of futuristic nightmares where gangs roam the barren landscapes scavenging for resources is pertinent right now as we drift into the age of climate disaster. Slots providers evidently think so. Canine Carnage by Play n Go (November 2022) joins a growing list of apocalyptic games including the Nitropolis series from Elk Studios, Dead Rider’s Trail from Relax Gaming and Mad Cars from Push Gaming.

The game’s do or die, chaotic atmosphere is not matched by extreme variance or win potential but thanks to regular payouts, and a cool soundtrack and artwork, Canine Carnage is a compelling slot to spin.

What Our Reviewer Says ...

"A super-fun mad-max style slot with roaming dog-gangs and a money train style bonus round with cash wins and collectors!"

Overall Score: 7.8

Theme & Design

Our Score 9

Play n Go do a good job of setting the scene here – the game starts with a short clip of a max-max style truck topped by a leering, mohican-sporting bull-dog driving across desert land, with dust storms behind and industrial waste scattered about. Cut to scene two and another truck screeches to a halt with a 5×3 reel set on its back. And you’re good to go!

In terms of style, this slot draws very obvious comparisons with Nitropolis from ELK Studios. Not just because of the dog-gang members, but also because of the pumping soundtrack which is non-stop throughout. The action does not quite match the chaos of Nitro-Reels, but the regularity of wins and cell splits certainly means this is a pacier slot than most.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 8

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

The RTP of Canine Carnage is 96.2%, putting it bang average for a Play n Go slot and on the same level as another recent release from this studio, Wild Falls 2. If you are looking for a Play n Go slot with a higher RTP then you could try Hooligan Hustle (96.27% RTP).

Despite it’s do its manic style, Canine Carnage does not have a particularly extreme maths model. Instead it sits in the medium variance range, offering a fairly even distribution of wins and regular payouts.

Maximum Win

Our Score 6

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

The maximum win in Canine Carnage is a disappointing 3,000x. This is low even for a medium variance slot. If you are looking for higher potential from Play n Go then we suggest you try a game like Mega Don (10,000x) or Count Jokula (8,350x) instead.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 8

The symbols on the reels in Canine Carnage reflect the dystopian narrative with a cool blend of classic slot icons, crazy cartoon dogs and petrol-flaming cans.

Symbol values are not that high but remember you have the chance to boost the paylines up to a maximum of 248,832 thanks to the Splitting Cells mechanic that is central to the gameplay.

Wins are triggered by landing three or more identical symbols across a payline from left to right. Here are the highlights of the paytable:

  • Low payers are the cards, 10 through to Ace, awarding up to 0.4x for five on a line.
  • The cartoon dogs are the premiums, each looking like an insane Mad Max style character and paying up to 3x for five on a payline.
  • Wilds, which have several functions as explained below, are also paying symbols, valued at up to 5x for five on a line.
  • Petrol Cans act as the scatters and are required to unlock the free spins round.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 8

Wilds, Multipliers and a Money Train-style bonus round with Collectors and Splitters drive the gameplay in Canine Carnage.

Here is how it all works:

Wilds and Splitter Wilds

Look out for the Flaming Skull Wild which performs two functions. Firstly, they sub in for any other symbol to create a win. Secondly, they may cause symbols to their RIGHT to split if that symbol is a Royal, a Character, a Golden Bone or another Wild.

Anyone who has played any No Limit City slots will be familiar with the splitting cell feature. That has the effect of creating more active paylines as more rows are added to the relevant reel.

NOTE: Wilds land as normal on the reels on any spin OR are dropped at random, up to 3 at a time, at the end of a spin.

Multipliers of up to 5x

There are also Multiplier symbols in this game. Like Wilds these land on any spin or are added at random.

Multipliers have a value of 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x and unlike standard Multipliers they do not have to be part of a winline to activate. Instead, ALL wins are subject to the multiplier displayed at the end of a spin.

Golden Bones Award Instant Prizes

Next up is the Golden Bone which drops at any time to display an instant cash prize, expressed as a multiple of your stake. E.g. a £1 stake with a 5x Golden Bone gets you a £5 prize. These max out at 5x as well.

Golden Bones land as normal or are added randomly – up to six at a time – at the end of a spin.

Bone Spins Bonus Round With Golden Bones and Cash Pots

The Free Spins round has the feel of a Money Train about it. It works as follows:

  • Three or more Flaming Petrol scatters are needed to unlock SIX Bone Spins.
  • Regular symbols no longer appear on the reels.
  • Golden Bones pay out instantly AND their values go into the Cash Pots displayed above the reels.
  • To unlock the Cash Pot you’ll need to land a Collector Symbol.
  • Multipliers are also accumulated and displayed above the reels. The multiplier total is applied to any win unlocked by the Collector.
  • For each spin, up to SIX extra Golden Bones may be added and up to THREE Splitters.
  • In this case, Splitters are going to double the value of any Golden Bones to their right.

More Games Like Canine Carnage

Money Train – There are some obvious similarities between Canine Carnage’s bonus round and Relax Gaming’s Money Train slot. The use of Collectors to pull together the value of other instant prize symbols that drop onto the reels is taken directly from that game. However, if you are expecting the kind of high variance mayhem you get with Relax, think again. Canine Carnage is a much more stable game model with more regular, smaller payouts. It is capped at 3,000x whereas Money Train can pay out up to 20,000x to lucky punters.

Nitropolis 2 – If you like futuristic games featuring canine creatures then we also recommend ELK Studios Nitropolis 2. Just like Canine Carnage, Nitropolis 2 features an extending reel set that can create an incredible 191,102,976 paylines. The reels are filled with gangs of dogs making their way through a Mad Max style landscape in a desperate search for fuel. It features Wilds, Re-Spins and Pays Both Ways features. The action is high variance and the top win is bigger than Canine Carnage at 10,000x.

The Final Verdict

Canine Carnage is a brilliant mix of modern slot features interwoven with an exciting apocalyptic narrative. It won’t appeal to the high variance risk takers out there but for casual slots fans this is a chance to enjoy the kind of mechanics normally reserved for most volatile slots.

To win big you’ll need to look to split as many cells as possible with the Wild Splitters to increase your paylines and hope for high value Multipliers to drop simultaneously. Into the free spins round it is all about grabbing as many Golden Bones as you can and building up the Multiplier value to optimise your payouts as much as possible.

The gameplay here will remind slots fans of many different games, not least Money Train, but the combination is an original one. And at a medium variance you can enjoy this one at a steady pace too!

Good luck!
