Theme and Design
Nolimit City have produced some games with sensational themes and artwork in their time. Golden Genie is a more simple affair, with a dark blue and purple night sky covered with bright stars shining down on the game reels. There is a nice Arabian soundtrack to enjoy too, with a few dramatic orchestral flourishes thrown in. It’s not the most exciting-looking slot, but the drama is in the gameplay as we found out.

RTP and Variance
Golden Genie and the Walking Wilds has 2 RTP rates – 96.03% and 94.11%. It is down to your casino operator to decide which to run the game on. Many in the UK will now run games at 94% or lower when they can to improve house edge so watch out for that. I had a look around and found that Barz Casino (White Hat Gaming) has this one at 96.03% so that would be a good place to play. You can check RTP for yourself by browsing the game rules page from the game window wherever you play.
This is Nolimit City so its no surprise to see that the volatility of the game is high, though not as crazy as their ‘intense’ or ‘extreme’ variance games. Nevertheless, it will still be a tough nut to crack and can burn you fast, so set your stake carefully before you spin.
Golden Genie and the Walking Wilds also has a higher than average win rate - 33.91% according to the NLC fan site, and backed up by our tests. So it's an unusual mix of high variance and high win rate!
Maximum Win
Golden Genie was released in July 2020 and before NLC had really made a name for themselves with crazy max win slots like Tombstone RIP (300,000x) or San Quentin xWays (150,000x). In comparison the top payout of 9,583x looks mild but it’s still a good number to aim for.
Symbols and Paytable
The game plays on 5 reels and 3 rows with 20 paylines to win on. You trigger payouts by landing 3 or more identical symbols across a line from left to right, starting at the left most reel.
Low value symbols in the game are made up of playing cards, from 10 to Ace. These are valued at from 0.25x for 3 10s up to 6.25x for 5 Aces. The premium ones are the big cats, serpents, the lamp, the hero Aladdin and his Princess. These are valued at from 0.5x for 3 cats up to 25x for 5 Princesses.

The genie himself is the most powerful symbol.
He is both the Wild and the Scatter symbols so he can create wins by subbing in for all pay symbols AND trigger the bonus round when three or more land on one spin. He also has a value of 1x, 3.75x or 25x for 3, 4 or 5 on a line.
Features and Gameplay
The best payouts in Golden Genie come when the wilds, multipliers and free spins combine. Here is how you can unlock each feature:
Genie Lamp Stacked Wilds
In the base game it is possible to fill reels 2 and 4 each with a full stack of wilds. When this happens they lock into place and the remaining 3 reels carry on spinning. When the Stacked Wilds feature is in play then the game becomes a pays both ways slot – left to right and right to left – so the odds of hitting a winning combination are improved.
Genie Wishes
Genies in bottles grant wishes, right? That’s how it works. So, to trigger this feature you will need to drop an Aladdin to the left of a lamp icon. This gives Aladdin a chance to rub his lamp and release the Genie Wishes. This transforms all Aladdin symbols and all Lamp symbols into Wilds. On top of that, all the other symbols on the paytable will now feature a multiplier of between 2x and 10x.
Genie Parade – Free Spins and Multipliers
The main event in Golden Genie is the free spins round called Genie Parade.
To trigger the bonus round you’ll need to land three or more Genie Scatters. Then, with each free spin any Genies on the reel will move one reel to the left, continuing until they drop off the end. At the same time, ONE genie is chosen as the Golden Genie, complete with multiplier. With each spin his multiplier will increase by 1x. When he drops off the end reel his multiplier is passed backwards to any genie to his right. The process continues until no more genies appear on the reels. Then the bonus round ends.
Things get interesting here of course because the longer the round continues, the higher your multiplier will climb and the more chance you will have of reaching that top payout of over 9,000x.
Final Verdict
There are plenty of Arabian-nights themed slots and lots of Walking wilds slots too but Golden Genie does a good job or measuring up its competition. The graphics and animations are top class as you would expect from Nolimit City and the gameplay is excellent. The key is to hit the Genie Parade and watch those Genies walk .. the longer the parade continues the higher your multiplier goes! This is simpler than most NLC slots, but it's all the better for it.
Testing Notes
Test spins and results analysis by Mark Wadie on 09.07.24
Results from 100 spins with real money on Golden Genie and the Walking Wilds at Barz Casino.
- Stake Size: £0.2
- Start balance: £20.12
- End balance: £40.60
- Hit Rate: 33% (66 winning spins in 200)
- Biggest Win: 123.4x
- Free Spins Round: 1
Golden Genie played true to the numbers published on the NLC fan website. The win rate was a very pleasing 33%. That’s much higher than most high variance slots and it means you see a nice number of winning spins, though the wins on average are quite low. I would add that the distribution was streaky though – after a fast start there was a 20 or 30 spin period where very little happened.
And the main event – the Genie Parade – appeared once in 200 spins (NLC say 1 in 190). I had 4 genies to start which is what you want. As the left-most genie arrives at the end of the grid, his multiplier is passed to genie number 2, then from him to 3, and him to 4, all the time getting bigger. I ended on a 12x with a 123.4x win shown in this screenshot. Of course, I could have landed more genies and grown that further but wasn’t to be.

Elsewhere, it took 73 spins to see a stacked genie wild, then 5 showed up over the next 50 spins. Again, typically of a volatile slot. The best payout was a 27.75x shown here.

This was a good run and ended with a positive balance. The features are smart and drop regular enough to make this one of NLC’s more palatable games.
