How We Review Slot Games

We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.

Honey Rush by Play n Go is a cluster pays slot, played on a clever hexagonal grid. It offers a maximum win of 9,000x your bet and generous RTP of 96.54%. With high volatility, there’s a sting in the tail of this slot, but if you’ve got the bankroll to weather it, you could be in for big payouts. All winning symbols in the game contribute to a Rush Meter that creates super clusters and adds sticky wilds to the grid when it fills up. Look out as well for sticky jars of honey that act as wild multiplier symbols.

Testing Notes: Here’s What Happened When We Played Honey Rush

IMPORTANT: To give you an accurate assessment of the games we review our writers play 200 spins. Whilst this is a useful tool to help us review games and to give an example of what might happen when you play, keep in mind that 200 spins is only a very small sample and cannot be used to accurately predict what might happen over another 200 spins. The outcome of all slots play is always random.

Boom Or Bust? Our Session By The Numbers

Test spins and results analysis by Mark Wadie.

Results from 100 spins with real money on Honey Rush at Casumo.

  • Stake Size: £0.1
  • Start balance: £1,012.73
  • End balance: £1,016.57
  • Win Rate: 38% (38 winning spins in 100)
  • Biggest Win: 58.3x

Honey Rush defied its high variance rating by producing a short session of just 100 spins with plenty of action. The win rate is a lot higher than you find in most volatile slots. I saw 38 winning spins – most would produce 25 or less. And whilst it took a while to warm up, after a while I started seeing a few good runs where the Rush Meter filled up to trigger Drone Colonies, releasing sticky wilds onto the grid. This happened 5 times, and on one occasion I got as far as the Queen Colony.

The fun part about cluster pays slots with cascades of course is that the features snowball, and that is certainly the case here. With 3 sticky wilds, 2 with multipliers, in play, you have a good chance of continuing your winning run and building more clusters for more payouts. I maxed out at 58.3x which is a small win compared to the 9,000x the game is capable of producing, but it was a good taste of what Honey Rush can offer.

To sum up, this is a simple slot with a laid back vibe and a compelling feature in the Rush Meter. Combined with the high win rate, this was a fun one to try.

What We Liked

  • High win rate in testing - 38% of spins produced a win
  • Clever Rush Meter feature rewards long sequences of cascading wins
  • Fun, laid back production and soundtrack
  • Wins of up to 9,000x possible

What We Didn't like

  • Low RTP at some slot sites
  • Gameplay can feel a bit same-y after a while

What Our Reviewer Says ...

"A popular cluster pays game for good reason combining cascades with a fun feature meter. Those powerful sticky wild multipliers can take you a long way!"

Overall Score: 7.8

Theme & Design

Our Score 9

Play n Go thought outside the box when it came to the organisation of the reels in this game. We know bees make hexagonal shapes in their honeycomb, so it’s clever to see this hexagonal organisation. It also makes way pretty naturally for some large clusters! Elsewhere the forest background is restful and the flower symbols in keeping with the cute bee theme. There are even the shadows of bees buzzing in the background and well-designed but not intrusive animations.

Honey Rush by Play n Go

The bee theme is undoubtedly popular, 3 Buzzing Wilds and Bee Hive Bonanza are just two recent examples. However, Play n Go’s execution of a unique grid shape and crisp, clean graphics make this one really stand out.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 8

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

At its optimum rate, Honey Rush has an RTP of 96.54%. You can’t complain about that. Sure, the high volatility won’t suit everybody, but the combination of high variance and a strong RTP means you’re more likely to hit some large wins eventually. If you’ve got a big enough bankroll to weather some dry spells, Honey Rush is an excellent choice.

However, keep in mind that there are other RTP rates for this game – 96.5%, 94.5%, 91.5%, 87.5%, 84.5%. It is at your casino operator’s discretion to choose which setting to run the game at, and many UK slot sites opt for lower than optimum. You can check RTP for yourself from within the game by browsing to the game info screen via the ‘?’ link under the reels.

We recommend playing at MrQ from Lindar Media which consistently runs slots at optimum RTP rates.

Maximum Win

Our Score 7

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

The top payout of 9,000x your bet is pretty good, but not incredible. Combined with that RTP the numbers look good. But if you’re looking to chase some serious jackpots but want a similarly cute bee theme then you can’t go wrong with Beelionaires Dream Drop, which lets you try your luck at a progressive jackpot well into the millions!

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 7

Honey Rush is played on a hexagonal shaped grid of 7 rows, and from 4 to 7 reels. Instead of regular paylines, you make wins using the cluster pays mechanic. This requires you to match at least 5 symbols that connect with each other horizontally or vertically.

Honey Rush Paytable
The paytable with 200x for 35 or more diamonds in a cluster

There are 7 pay symbols in total, plus a wild symbol. The low-value symbols are the flowers, a blue one, a pink one, a red rose, and a sunflower. These each pay up to 20x the bet for a combination of 35 or more symbols. The premium symbols are the coins, one bronze, one silver, and one gold, and a diamond. The diamond is the highest paying of all, giving 2x your bet for 5, up to 400x your bet for 35 or more.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 8

Honey Rush has plenty of interesting features that help to take what could be quite a relaxing slot and turn it into something a whole lot more exciting. Let’s take a look at them each in detail.

Cascading Wins

Every time you make a win, the winning symbols in the cluster will vanish and new ones will cascade onto the grid. If they make a new win, these too vanish and more cascade down until no new wins are made or the whole grid is full of matching symbols.

Importantly, every winning symbol is also added to the Rush Meter, which can trigger the Colony feature if it fills up.

Sticky and Regular Wild Symbol

The Wild symbol is the honey jar and it substitutes for all pay symbols to make wins.

The sticky wild jar is red honey and is only added via the Rush Meter. This jar does not disappear in the cascading feature because it is sticky (like honey, get it?). Instead, it moves one position in any direction with each cascade. It will have a multiplier of 1x, 2x or 3x.

You can have up to 3 sticky wilds on the grid at any one time and their multipliers multiply together when part of a win giving you a max multiplier of 27x your win.

Rush Meter

The Rush Meter receives a star for every winning symbol in a cascade, but it resets every time you spin. The meter has four distinct stages, which award their own prizes, shown below:

  • 20 winning symbols: Drone Colony and 1 sticky wild
  • 40 winning symbols: Drone Colony and 1 sticky wild
  • 80 winning symbols: Drone Colony and 1 sticky wild
  • 160 winning symbols: Queen Colony

Colony Feature

So, what is the colony feature? It has three levels, Drone, Worker, and Queen. If you land 20, 40 or 80 winning symbols on the Rush Meter then you trigger the Drone Colony. The Queen Colony can only be activated with 160 winning symbols in the Rush Meter. And if you land a non-winning spin at any time then the Worker Colony can trigger at random.

The Colony Feature clones the center symbol (right in the middle of the grid) and creates a cluster around it of the same symbols i.e. a winning cluster. The size of this cluster depends on whether you get the Drone, Worker, or Queen Colony. The drone cluster is 7 symbols, the worker is anywhere from 7-15 symbols and the Queen cluster is 20-37.

The Final Verdict

Honey Rush is a clever slot with a truly unique design that will delight fans of other bee themed slots. The cluster pays mechanic works particularly well on the hexagonal grid and thanks to sticky wilds multipliers that 9,000x max win doesn’t feel out of reach. Jackpot chasers might prefer a slot with a slightly higher maximum payout, but for most players, this slot combines the excitement of high volatility, with a bundle of great features that will make your play session fly by – or should we say buzz by?

Useful Tips When Playing Honey Rush

Remember, online slots are games of chance, there is NO strategy that can improve your odds of winning. However, reading our review and following these tips will help you get the most out of your time playing this slot game.

1. Eyes On That Rush Meter

The Rush Meter and the Colony feature are highlights of the game. You need lots of successive cascades and big clusters to fill the meter and trigger that colony.

2. Go Low On Stake Level

We recommend playing at a low stake level to avoid burning out too quickly. This game is volatile so it can deliver some bad streaks before you land any big wins.

3. Use Sticky Wilds To Build More Clusters

In the free spins round the Sticky Wilds are helpful in building more and bigger clusters. Don’t forget, their multipliers grow with each cascade. That’s powerful!

4. Play At Our Recommended Slot Sites

We have chosen the sites on this page because they all scored high in our reviews and they are licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. That makes them fair and safe places to play slots.
