How We Review Slot Games

We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.

Tomb of Gold is a 4,096 win ways slot with an ancient Egyptian theme from Play n Go. The base game includes a classic Hold and Win game called Lock n Gold with 3 re-spins where only coins and blanks may land. When you run out of spins or the screen is filled with coins they all turn into multipliers of up to 100x for a final payout. The dramatic free spins round gets you up to 30 spins with a starting multiplier of up to 5x. Each wild that lands increases the multiplier by 1x and each sphinx that lands increases the free spins count by 1. The max win is 7,000x and spins start at 10p.

Testing Notes: Here’s What Happened When We Played Tomb of Gold

IMPORTANT: To give you an accurate assessment of the games we review our writers play 200 spins. Whilst this is a useful tool to help us review games and to give an example of what might happen when you play, keep in mind that 200 spins is only a very small sample and cannot be used to accurately predict what might happen over another 200 spins. The outcome of all slots play is always random.

Boom Or Bust? Our Session By The Numbers

I played 250 spins on Tomb of Gold on Play n Go’s test server prior to release to test the game. This is what happened.

  • Stake Size: £1
  • Start balance: £25,000
  • End balance: £24,932.60
  • Hit Rate: 26% (65 winning spins in 250)
  • Biggest Win: 59.4x
  • Free Spins Round: 2

Before getting into the numbers, I should say this is a great looking game. The animations are superb, particularly in the free spins round which has plenty of drama as your multiplier grows and wins trigger across the reels.

As for the gameplay, it was typical high variance stuff. The hit rate was solid at 26% so roughly 1 in 4 spins producing a win, but there was a lot of teasing too. The Lock n Gold feature requires six scatters to trigger it. Landing 4 or 5 earns a re-spin and the chance to land the extra required. This happened 9 times over 250 spins and not once did I get the extra coins!

Tomb of Gold Free Spins
Free spins with a 9x multiplier on the way to a 59.4x win

Never mind because the free spins round did trigger TWICE. And on the second occasion it produced a 59.4x win which you can see in the screenshot. This was a dramatic round starting with a 3x multiplier which increased to 9x over the course of 26 spins. I was pleasantly surprised how many wilds and sphinxes landed to extend the spin count and increase the multiplier. Of course, a 9x multiplier is no good without winning spins and I could have done with a few more of those, but a final payout of 59.4x isn’t bad and on this evidence there is plenty of potential for this game to pop every once in a while. High variance fans should love it.

What We Liked

  • Up to 30 free spins from the wheel at the start of the bonus round
  • Superb visuals with rich illustrations and animations
  • Extra chance to unlock Hold and Win game if you land 4 or 5 scatters
  • Extra prize for 4 or more sphinx scatters

What We Didn't like

  • Watch for low RTP rates at some sites
  • Features aren't particularly original

What Our Reviewer Says ...

"An awesome production with great visuals and animations, and two strong features backed by a high variance maths model that suggests it will go off in a big way at times."

Overall Score: 8.2

Theme & Design

Our Score 10

Superbly Rich and Detailed Visuals In A Classic Slot Theme

Play n Go, as the artists behind Book of Dead and the very many iterations of that popular slot, know a thing or two about games with Ancient Egyptian themes. And they bring their experience to the table here with rich and striking visuals. Of course we are in the tomb of some late Phraraoh, stone walls and pillars surrounding an impressive reel set with beautifully illustrated symbols. There are fire pits flanking the walls and golden sphinxes either side of the reel set. It looks regal and there is a suitably grand orchestral soundtrack to complete the scene. Basically, bang on what you want from this style of game!

RTP and Variance

Our Score 8

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

Tomb of Gold has the standard FIVE RTP rates for operators to pick from – 96.29%, 94.29%, 91.28%, 87.27% and 84.26%. You want to avoid any casino that runs this game at the lower settings as it diminishes your chances of coming away cash positive. The optimum rate of 96.29% is healthy enough and I recommend playing at MrQ from Lindar Media which consistently runs games at their highest RTP rates.

You can see which RTP rate the game is set to at your casino by hitting the ? button under the reels once the game has loaded. Then scroll down the page until you see Return to Player. Try to avoid sites that run any less than 94.29%.

This is another high variance game so it will be a volatile play with uneven win distribution but it has a reasonably high potential and can kick out some nice win sequences if you are patient and get lucky!

Maximum Win

Our Score 7

What Is Maximum Win?

Maximum win refers to the maximum amount a player can win from one spin. It is expressed as a multiple of the stake. For example, where the maximum win is 100,000x, from a £1 stake, the maximum win would be £100,000.

Onto the top win and it maxes out at 7,000x in Tomb of Gold. That is much lower than Play n Go’s highest potential slots like Kiss Reels of Rock (50,000x) for example. However, it’s not always all about that big headline number and there are plenty of other reasons to give Tomb of Gold a spin.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 8

This is a classic 4,096 win ways game. It plays on 6 reels with 4 rows on each with a win ways mechanic driving the payouts. That means you need to land identical symbols on adjacent reels from left to right, regardless of their row position, starting at the left most reel. The calculation for win ways is therefore 4x4x4x4x4x4 (= 4,096).

Tomb of Gold Paytable
The paytable with 5x for 6 top paying premiums

Paytable values are pretty average but with 4,096 win ways in play that doesn’t matter so much. The low payers are the cards, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace. These are valued at from 0.2x for 3 10s up to 1.4x for 6 Aces.  The premiums are the 4 Egyptian symbols – cross, scarab beetle, cat and human face. These are valued at from 0.7x for 3 crosses up to 5x for 6 human faces.

There is also a Wild, represented by the snake. This is valued at 6x when 6 land on a win way and it substitutes for all pay symbols to create win ways too.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 8

There are TWO types of scatter symbol in Tomb of Gold – coins and sphinxes. Each triggers a different feature. They work as follows:

Six Coin Scatters Triggers Lock n Gold

You need SIX of the coin scatters to set up the Lock n Gold feature. If you land just 4 or 5 then they will each lock in place whilst reels without coin scatters will re-spin to see if you can earn those extras to launch the feature.

Lock n Gold is a mini ‘Hold and Win’ game. You get 3 spins to start and now only coins and blanks will land. Coins lock in place when they land and each time this happens your spin count re-sets to 3. Lock n Hold continues until the reels are filled with coins OR you run out of spins.

When the round ends, every coin spins round to reveal a multiplier value of between 1x and 100x. They are all added up and the total is applied to your stake for the final pay out.

Free Spins With Progressive Multiplier

The free spins round is a classic progressive multiplier one. You need to land 3 or more sphinx scatters to trigger it. They can land ANYWHERE on the reels. And if you hit 4, 5 or 6 you’ll also get an instant prize before the round starts like this:

  • 4 Sphinx Scatters: 5x prize
  • 5 Sphinx Scatters: 10x prize
  • 6 Sphinx Scatters: 20x prize

The number of free spins awarded is determined by the spin of a giant wheel. It also reveals the starting multiplier value for the round. You’ll get between 10 and 30 spins and a multiplier of between 1x and 5x.

During the round each Sphinx scatter that lands will extend the round by 1 spin and every Wild that lands will increase your multiplier by 1x.

According to game rules, free spins are capped at 65, though it seems extraordinarily unlikely that you would ever see that many in one round!

The Final Verdict

At first glance Tomb of Gold might look like just another Ancient Egyptian slot with some very over-used features in hold and win and free spins with progressive multipliers. But the superb quality of the production and the configuration of that free spins round with the chance to keep extending one spin at a time and one multiplier level at a time, elevate the game to another level. In my opinion, the drama of that feature mixed with compelling visuals make Tomb of Gold a game that high volatility fans can’t afford to miss.

Useful Tips When Playing Tomb of Gold

Remember, online slots are games of chance, there is NO strategy that can improve your odds of winning. However, reading our review and following these tips will help you get the most out of your time playing this slot game.

1. Check That RTP Rate Before You Play

In my exprience in the UK there are plenty of casinos that will take the chance to run Play n Go slots at the lowest RTP rates available. In this case, 84.26%. You definitely want to avoid that, so check the game info screen before you bet to be sure you are getting good value on your wagering.

2. Look Out For Sphinx Scatters

The free spins round is a powerful one with the chance to keep building your multiplier up and up as wilds land. You’ll need just 3 sphinx scatters to trigger it and I managed that twice over 250 spins. Keep your eyes peeled and get ready to spin the wheel when they land to determine your starting spins and multiplier.

3. Choose A Sensible Stake

Use our bankroll management advice and set your stake level small relative to your overall balance to avoid burn out. This is a volatile slot and despite its c. 25% hit rate it can rinse your funds quickly.

4. Play At Our Recommended Slot Sites

We have hand-picked the sites on this page because they score well in our reviews. Each one is licensed by the UK Gambling Commission and offers fair, safe and secure slots play with responsible gambling tools to help manage your spend.
