I played 200 spins on Chambers of Ancients on Play n Go’s test server prior to release to test the game. This is what happened.

Chambers of Ancients teased with a low hit rate at just 18%, but it really kicked off in the free spins round on one occasion, notching up a big 437x win that you can see in the screenshot below. The key to that was unlocking bonus games multiple times over because the keys are held rather than re-setting between spins. That makes it easier to collect 3 of any kind and in doing so unlocking a chamber. I was also helped by a re-trigger that meant I started with 8 spins but ended up playing 16 in total.

In short, this is a classic high variance slot. It was very frustrating for most of those 200 spins but once the free spins round got going, it was superb. The round just kept delivering, with 4 or 5 bonus chamber games playing out and it’s easy to see how it could go even futher. On the flipside of course, on a slow day, Chambers of Ancients could be a real grind.

Epic Scenes In This Superb Slot With FOUR Different Gods

Chambers of Ancients is a gods-themed game with suitably epic design. The action takes place somewhere in the mountains of the gods with huge rocky cliff faces surrounding the reels and floating islands of rocks drifting amongst the clouds above. There is an ethereal soundtrack that doubles down on the sense of wonder and the reel set itself is stacked with gods from a mixed catalogue of belief systems, including Norse, Hindu and Celtic. At the start of the game, the gods appear from a giant portal center screen, each bringing their own powers. And the narrative is carried through into the bonus games where each god has a chamber in which hold and win games are played. It’s a well-executed idea and for those who enjoy their gods-slots, a nice addition to the category.

Chambers of Ancients plays out on a 5 reel and 3 row game area with just 10 paylines to win on. Wins are triggered in the usual way by landing 3 or more identical symbols across a line from left to right, starting at the left most reel.

There are 11 symbols in the paytable. Low value ones are the cards, 10 through to Ace, valued at from 0.5x for 3 10s up to 5x for 5 Aces. The premiums are the 4 gods – Thor, Athena, Ganesha, Caishen, and Eset. These are valued at from 1x for Eset up to 30x for 5 of Thor.

There is a wild too, represented by a star emblem. This will substitute for all other pay symbols to complete paylines. It also comes with its own pay value of 4x, 8x or 40x for 3, 4 or 5 on a line. In addition, Wilds also expand to the full height of their reels if in doing so they can help to complete more paylines.

In Chambers of Ancients there is a bonus Hold and Win game associated with each god. You have to unlock the games which take place in a Chamber.

Unlocking the Bonus Chamber Games

The games are unlocked by landing keys. Each god has a key associated with them and you need to land 3 of the same type on one spin to unlock the respective chamber. Here, the wild master key, displayed with the wild symbol when it lands, can help you here because it will make up the numbers if you only land 1 or 2 of a bonus key type. But that’s not all, if you land THREE wild master keys, then you get access to ALL four bonus games, one after the other!

How The Bonus Chamber Hold and Win Games Work

So, once you have unlocked any of the bonus games, then you are taken to the god’s chamber. A 3×3 grid is displayed and a Hold and Win game plays out. During the game, cash value coins and special coins land, though some positions will show neither. As long as at least one coin lands on a spin, the counter re-sets. And if the entire grid is filled with coins, all values are collected, the grid is cleared and the spins re-set to 3 to start again.

The cash value coins take their value from the god whose chamber you are in like this:

  • Eset – 2.5x
  • Caishen – 5x
  • Ganesha – 7.5x
  • Athena – 12.5x
  • Thor – 25x

The special coins each activate the following events:

  • Collector Coins – takes the value of all cash value coins on the grid before they are removed
  • Value Booster – adds a random value to one cash value coin on the grid before disappearing
  • Multiplier Coin – doubles the value of all cash value coins on the grid before disappearing
  • Single Multiplier Coin – a 2x, 3x, 4x or 8x multiplier is applied to one coin on the grid
  • Mystery – will reveal a cash value coin or a different special coin from this list
  • Value Coins – show a prize of 0.1x to 5x depending on which bonus game you are playing

The bonus game ends when 3 successive spins return no coins.

There is also a free spins round in Chambers of Ancients. It is unlocked by landing mask scatter symbols as follows:

The Final Verdict

Chambers of Ancients has the making of a classic. The theme and features don’t break new ground but the powerful configuration of those Hold and Win rounds is set to deliver some epic wins in time. You could complain about the low hit rate here but it would be wrong because it’s a natural trade-off being made to allow for the kind of win sequences that every high variance fan craves. And when this game gets going, it really can produce the goods as the short test session showed us. I wouldn’t recommend this slot to anyone but the most dedicated high volatility players, but for that group, this is one of Play n Go’s best releases for some time.
