Theme and Design
Mighty Masks may be a high variance slot but it has none of the dark, brooding atmospheres of classic Hacksaw games like Hand of Anubis or Rotten. Instead, this is an upbeat number with a relentlessly cheery savannah soundtrack that takes you directly to the sweeping plains and jungles of Africa.
This slot’s cheerleader is a native African character depicted with headdress and makeup, bouncing along to the left of the reel set. Meanwhile, the reels themselves are populated by a cast of creatures that look like they’ve jumped straight out of the latest Dreamworks picture. Fun stuff.
RTP and Variance
Mighty Masks has four available RTP settings of 96.3%, 94.2%, 92.26% or 88.38%. The top RTP of 96.3% is good and above average for an online slot. But your casino can choose which setting to run the game at. We verified the RTP setting at five popular slot sites. This is what we found:
- Casumo (independent): 94.2%
- BacanaPlay (Skill on Net): 92.26%
- PlayGrand (White Hat Gaming): 94.2%
- All British Casino (L and L Europe): 92.26%
- MrQ (independent): 96.3%
MrQ offers the best value for your wagering here where the RTP setting is the maximum available. Want to know more about RTP? Read this guide.
Mighty Masks is a medium-high variance slot. Perhaps not as tough and high risk as games like Itero or Hand of Anubis from the same developer, but still a volatile game nevertheless.
Maximum Win
The maximum win from Mighty Masks is 10,000x. This is standard for a Hacksaw slot of this nature. If you are looking for a Hacksaw game with a higher maximum payout you could try Wanted Dead or a Wild or RIP City, both of which have a top win of 12,500x.
Symbols and Paytable
Mighty Masks is a standard 5-reel slot with 4 rows per reel and 20 active paylines in play on every spin. To trigger a win, players must land 3 or more identical symbols across a payline from left to right.
There are 10 standard symbols as well as a Wild, Nudge Wild and Mystery Masks. Like most Hacksaw Gaming slots with a big multiplier feature, the paytable values are not huge, but where multipliers are triggered by the multiplier wheel, small numbers can soon turn big.
Low payers are the cards 10 through to Ace with wins from 0.2x for 3 10s up to 1x for 5 Aces. The premiums are the animals: bird, rhino, monkey, croc and lion. The latter is the highest value at 20x for 5 on a line. Wilds pay out 20x for 5 on a line too as well as substituting in for all other symbols to form wins.
Features and Gameplay
Mighty Masks kicks along at a nice pace. Wins from standard symbols will be mainly small so it’s the features events that you should be looking out for.
First is the Mystery Masks – these colourful tribal headpieces can land anywhere, revealing either a Wild or a pay symbol as they do. If more than one drops at the same time they each reveal the same symbol.
And … if three or more land at once then they will spread downwards to the last row on their reels, creating more chances of landing winning lines.
The main event is the Nudge Reels and Multiplier Wheel. The Multiplier Wheel only comes into play if the Nudge Reels symbol lands on a winning spin. Now, the Multiplier Wheel spins and reveals a multiplier value to be applied to ALL winning lines on the reels.
Things get more interesting if the Nudge Reels symbol lands with a number value on it. Now, the Multiplier Wheel will nudge the same number of times as the number displayed. With each nudge the value on the wheel will be added to an accumulated multiplier displayed above it. Then that accumulated multiplier value will be applied to ALL wins on the reels.
The numbers get exciting when you see how high the numbers on the Nudge Wild can get – 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 25 or 50. And on the Multiplier Wheel – 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x or 100x.
Finally, there is also the Free Spins feature – the Serengeti Sunset Bonus. To trigger this you need to land at least 3 Free Spins scatters. Spins are awarded as follows:
- 3 Scatters: 10 spins
- 4 Scatters: 12 spins
- 5 Scatters: 14 spins
In the Sunset Bonus, the Mystery Masks AND the Nudge Wilds are more frequent, and landing 2 scatters gets you 2 more spins, and 3 scatters gets you 4 more spins.
Final Verdict
Despite its unforgiving performance in our test session, Mighty Masks still scores well in our review. African Savannah is a new theme for Hacksaw, and typically of this studio they’ve found their own unique way to tackle it. The visuals and atmosphere, helped by that upbeat soundtrack, are memorable, and kept us engaged even during those long periods of unrewarding spins.
But what really makes this game worth playing is the opportunities for big wins provided by the Multiplier Wheel and nudge combination. With multipliers of up to 100x available, and the chance to accumulate them with as many as 50 multiple nudges, then some serious payouts can be achieved. Like us though, you’ll probably be waiting a long time to see them!
Testing Notes
I played Mighty Masks at PlayGrand, spinning at 10p per play with a £12.98 balance to start. I was bust within 17 minutes, managing just 180 spins in that time!
So it is that sometimes these games just aren’t in the mood to pay. The highest win I scored in that session was less than 10x, Nudge Wilds that activated the Multiplier Wheel appeared just four times, and the free spins round was never triggered.
The Mystery Masks were a regular occurrence however and did help out with some small wins. Two or more also landed concurrently on several occasions, spreading downwards to bring up more win lines, though the payouts were never that big.
The video below shows the Free Spins round in free play mode triggered by Bonus Buy and played on the Hacksaw Gaming website.
