Theme and Design
Those interested in Mesoamerican history and folklore will know that Tollan is the name given to this culture’s place of origin. So, it’s easy to see why Play n Go felt inspired to create this Aztec adventure themed slot. The jaguar features prominently in the tale of Tollan, so naturally, two glowing jaguar heads guard over the temple in this game. There’s also a human/jaguar hybrid who blows smoke from his neck and is occasionally animated during wins. In terms of looks, it takes a well-loved theme in the slots world and gives it an unusual twist with the big cat humanoid grid guardian.

Extra points have to be given for the sound effects, which include a jaguar-esque voice growling to announce any features. Plus, a heady medley of trance, psychedelic, drum and bass, and panpipes for the soundtrack.
RTP and Variance
The RTP does vary on some sites, but the default RTP of 96.2% is excellent for a slot with a max win of this size. It’s worth checking which RTP you’re playing for to avoid any unwanted surprises.
Temple of Tollan also runs at RTPs of 94.2%, 91.2%, 87.2% and 84.2% at some UK slot sites. Our recommendation is to play at MrQ from Lindar Media where RTP rate is always at optimum settings in Play n Go slots.
Unsurprisingly, this slot does have high volatility, so it can burn you and you’ll need a more generous bankroll if you want to play long enough to hit those big wins!
Maximum Win
A max payout of 15,000x your bet is definitely appealing, especially with a pretty generous RTP. If you like games with high max wins then you can check out our list of Play n Go's highest paying slots.
Symbols and Paytable
Temple of Tollan is played on a 7x7 grid with a cluster pays mechanic. This means you need to land at least 4 of the same symbol, all connected horizontally or vertically to win.

There are 9 pay symbols as well as a wild symbol and five different special symbols that we’ll cover below. The low paying symbols are the purple, blue, green, red, and orange stones. These pay 0.2x the bet for 4 symbols, up to 30x the bet for 20+ symbols. The premium symbols are the bat, frog, snake, and jaguar. These pay from 1x the bet for 4 symbols up to 100x the bet for 20+ symbols.
Wilds - represented by the 'W' - can substitute for any of the pay symbols to complete clusters.
Features and Gameplay
Temple of Tollan has fairly simple gameplay, but does mix things up with some interesting special symbols. Let’s take a look at these and the rest of this slot’s features.
Cascading Wins
Every time you make a win, the symbols within the winning cluster explode and more symbols drop down to replace them. This gives you a new chance to create winning clusters, and the cascade continues until no new wins are formed.

Special Symbols
At the beginning of each new spin, five special symbols are placed on the grid. These have 1, 2 or 3 ‘lives’. If a special symbol ends up being next to a winning cluster they lose a life in the cascade. Once a special symbol loses all of its lives, it triggers a feature and disappears.
So, you're goal is to destroy the special symbols. The features they trigger are these:
- Multiplier: this increases the win multiplier at random by 1x up to 50x. If this triggers during the free spins feature, it is persistent.
- Wild: adds between 2 and 6 wilds to the grid at random.
- Destroy: sets off the cascade mechanic by destroying symbols in a winning cluster.
- Transform: changes a set of symbols to a different (higher paying) symbol.
- Cross: explodes symbols in a cross pattern from its own location on the grid.
Free Spins
If you destroy 5 special symbols then the free spins round is triggered. You begin with 4 free spins with a guaranteed win EVERY time. Any current multiplier from the base game is carried over and does not reset between free spins. Any special symbols are also carried over and are sticky for the whole round.
And ... if you destroy 5 special symbols in the free spins round you get an additional 4 free spins.
Final Verdict
Temple of Tollan takes a tried and tested theme (Gonzita’s Quest, Aztec Powernudge, and Aztec Gem’s Deluxe to name just three) and gives it a fresh spin with 5 unique special symbols. We particularly liked the wild and unpredictable soundtrack. Plus, the RTP of 96.2% is generous, particularly considering the max win of 15,000x your bet.
It’s a shame there’s not a little more on offer in terms of features, as if you don’t manage to trigger the free spins round, it can get a little ‘samey’. However, with a big max win and a solid RTP, Aztec slots fans will enjoy this offering from Play n Go.

Temple of Tollan is a bit of an assault on the senses when you first load it up. The theme is Aztec but includes a very weird monster character and an odd blend of music. The grid itself is dark too and it’s hard to follow what is happening. It all felt quite jarring, only really coming together in the rare moments when a good cascading sequence built up.

As for the gameplay, that was a bit of a grind in trying to complete the mission to destroy the 5 special symbols and enter the free spins round. For each symbol destroyed, a portion of a mirror / meter on the left is filled. But most times only 1 or 2 portions are filled before it re-sets for the next spin. And there is not much else to talk of in the base game When the free spins did finally trigger it was over quickly with just 4 spins and a 2x multiplier bringing up a 15.4x win. To be fair, the production improved at that point and there are some dramatic animations to enjoy. But overall, this game didn’t really work for me. There is not enough in the features and the production is just a bit much!
