Golden Castle took a while to get going but produced some good moments over 200 spins. The best part was a free spins round which led to an 88.8x win thanks to an 8x multiplier and 3 Wild Haunt features. Free Spins is where Golden Castle really gets going – the action moves much quicker, and music picks up and the King’s spooky voice commentates on what is happening on the grid. It’s fun and nothing like any other slot I’ve played in a long time.

A Fun Fantasy Theme With Ghostly Undertones

Golden Castle Titanways exudes a weird vibe. It follows the fantasy theme of other Fantasma games, with a kind of medieval cartoon-castle dominating the screen, but adds in a haunted-house element. The castle appears to be ruled over by a King whose face is displayed at the top of the reel set which sits center stage. There is something ghoulish going on too, with Ghost King symbols appearing on the grid to trigger Wild features, and a Phantom Free Spins round triggered by an evil-looking ghost face with burning red eyes.

It’s hard to pin down exactly where the inspiration for this slot came from as it mixes a few styles, including social games like Candy Crush with its gem symbols, but it seems to work, adding some nice drama through the orchestral score which builds in the free spins round as the game climaxes with big progressive multipliers.

Golden Castle has an interesting. The action takes place on a 6×6 grid with symbols coming in five different sizes – 1×1, 1×2, 1×3, 2×2 or 3×3. But despite the differences, all symbols sizes are of equal value – i.e. a 1×3 of one symbol type is the same value as a 1×1 or 3×3 of that same symbol type.

This is not really a Cluster Pays slot. Instead, wins are simply triggered by landing 3 or more identical symbol types on adjacent reels from left to right. That means, no paylines, just Win Ways.

The symbol types are all gemstones and crystals. And they come in 3 groups – low, medium and high value.

The low value ones are the Grey, Blue and Purple Stones, worth from 0.1x for 3 up to 1.25x for 6 on a line. Mid value ones are Mint, Purple and Pink, worth from 0.2x for 3 up to 2x for 6. The high value ones are the crystals in Green, Blue, Red, and White, valued at from 0.5x for 3 greens up to 10x for 6 White.

At the heart of Golden Castle Titanways is the Avalanche Wins feature found in many grid and Cluster Pays slots. Every time a winning combination lands the winning symbols are removed from the grid after the payout so that others can fall down in their place and hopefully create new wins. If a hole appears when the icons are removed then any Mega-sized 2×2 and 3×3 symbols will crush the ones underneath them.

The avalanche sequence continues until no more wins are created.

Wild Haunt Feature Adds Wilds To The Grid

Fantasma have round an interesting way of bringing Wilds into play in this game. This is called the Wild Haunt feature and it occurs when one of two Ghost King symbols drop onto the grid. They are versions of the King who sits atop the reel set.

The Ghost King symbol selects one Mega Symbol (anything larger than 1×1) at random from those visible on the grid. You’ll see a line from the Ghost King symbol to the selected Mega Symbol. That symbol is then removed and replaced by 1×1 versions of it. Then, the Ghost King selects one or more of those new 1x1s to be Wild. This is a powerful trick as I discovered in testing, creating lots of symbols of the same type AND wilds to help join them into Win Ways.

After that, all Ghost King symbols visible on the reels turn into Wilds too, and any wins that have been created are paid out. 

Phantom Free Spins Feature

The Phantom Free Spins round is triggered by landing 3 or more of the Scatters, a kind of grey ghost face with red eyes. This is the most rewarding phase of the game, with the chance of re-triggers and a progressive multiplier.

When the scatter lands, he blows an orb out of his mouth and it highlights one of three spaces around the King at the top of the reels so you know how many more are needed from the current sequence of spins / Avalanches to trigger the free spins.

The round begins with 10 spins and a 1x multiplier. After each Avalanche Win, your multiplier goes up by a further 1x. It doesn’t re-set between spins. There is no limit to how high it can go. And if you land 3 more Scatters, another 10 spins are awarded, with no limit to re-triggers either.

The Final Verdict

If you enjoy the creative and off-beat style of Fantasma slots then chance are you’ll love this game. Initially I thought the gameplay looked very generic – progressive multipliers and free spins are hardly new – but it’s lifted to another level thanks to the clever creative execution and the weird but fun theme. The animations as Ghost Kings pick off mega symbols to break down and turn into wilds, and the frenetic pace of the free spins are particular highlights. The volatility can be harsh at times but I never felt like the game was too tight in testing as every 3 or 4 spins produced something. And with a 20,000x max win, this quirky slot can more than compete with bigger names out there.
