So, it’s exciting to be loading up another new game of theirs and find out if they can spin a new angle from the gambling-capital of Vegas. Graphically, Chip Spin is pretty straightforward stuff – it’s steeped in the atmosphere of Sin City, complete with imagery from the famous sights on the Strip, including the Luxor, the Stratosphere Tower and the Eiffel Tower from the Paris Las Vegas Hotel. If anything, this is a slightly retro-version of the city, with art deco stylings and characters on the reels that hark back to the mob-era rather than depicting the modern day one. But overall it’s glitzy and fun with a decadent underbelly!

In terms of gameplay, Relax have eschewed the standard reel format for a grid game one with a cluster pays mechanic with all the action centred around the humble casino chip which is critical to boosting wins by triggering sticky wilds and multipliers in the bonus round.

Let’s not underplay this – Chip Spin is another high-risk slot from Relax and one that scores as a 5/5 on their own volatility scale. That makes it a suitable game for those who enjoy the thrills and spills of high variance games and have a strong enough bank roll to cope with the dry spells of spins that come with the territory. Though the 10p minimum bet means that those with smaller budget can also test their luck. We expect very little payout in the base game – which in fact comes with no features at all – but the opportunity to witness some pretty epic wins in the free spins rounds where multipliers and wilds combine and a perfect combination could land the top payout of 25,102x. The RTP is set to an industry standard 96.41% and the hit frequency is advertised as 19.15% – one in five spins will produce a win of some kind on that basis.

The Cluster Pays mechanic in Chip Spin means you’re looking for clusters of 3 matching symbols from left to right landing in the same row, one row above or one below. The lowest paying symbols are the high cards, while the precious gems pay the middle rewards. The best-paying symbols are the poker players, each associated with a card suit.

You’ll find a purple guy wearing a fur coat and Stetson with a hearts symbol tucked in the ribbon; a red cigar-smoking bald guy with a tattoo of spades on his head; a mean-looking guy with the clubs suit on his sports jacket lapel; and a woman with dice symbols on her drop earrings. These are the premium symbols and can pay from 4x to 6x your bet for 5 of a kind. The cigar-smoker is the best-paying character symbol.

The fruit machine bonus symbol is the Scatter and 3 of these will launch the Free Spins round. The ‘W’ chip is the Wild symbol, though this doesn’t appear in the base game – you’ll need to trigger Free Spins to enjoy the rewards of this substituting symbol.

Chip Spin is all about the features which run as bonus games – there is no extra action in the base game beyond the standard spins and payouts. So, look out for the scatters and chip combination that are required to set up the following two feature rounds.

Free Spins

Landing 3 or more fruit machine Scatters will launch the Free Spins round. You’ll get 8 Free Spins initially with 2 more added if you find more Scatters during the round. During the Free Spins, 3 additional casino chips are added to the reels, each awarding a different feature:

Black chip – awards Sticky Wilds

Landing 5 of more casino chips of the same type in the base game will trigger the Chip Spin Bonus Game. You get 1 life to begin with and earn additional lives when chips with hearts land on the reels, while you lose a life when no casino chips land on a spin. During this Bonus Game, special casino chips are locked into position to award more features:

Black chip – these are Collectors which collect the value of all the coins, except their own

Green chip – awards a coin value

Purple chip – these are Snipers which double the value of 1-3 green chips

In addition, if an entire column of the grid is filled with green chips, then they are consolidated into one and the spaces vacated are filled with new chips.

The Final Verdict

Chip Spin is a fun trip to the Vegas of the old school, complete with mobsters, femme fatales and a classy, jazzy soundtrack. The characters are a bit cheesy to be honest, but it’s all in good fun. As we have come to expect from Relax Gaming, the features provided in Chip Spin are imaginative and we enjoyed the different chips awarding their own prizes and boosting values of those around them.

Perhaps the only disappointing thing about this slot was the base game which in reality is only a stepping-stone into the bonus rounds as it offers none of its own features. But once into those feature-events, things can get pretty exciting. Either bonus can work well – we all know how free spins, multipliers and sticky wilds can be but the Chip Spin Bonus with its unique blend of locked-in symbols and extra lives is a new experience with tons of potential.

In summary, this is an enjoyable trip to Vegas all in all with a perfect balance of cool vibes, tackiness and big winning opportunities – just try to being a decent bankroll to the reels because the high volatility isn’t forgiving, especially if you get stuck in the base game for multiple spins.
