How We Review Slot Games

We test and rate all slot games across 5 criteria, assigning a score out of 10 for each and an overall score that is an average of the 5. To build an accurate assessment of each game we gather information from the supplier and play in real play or demo mode. Find out more.

Red Tiger Gaming are one of Europe’s top slots providers, under the NetEnt umbrella for close to two years now. They built their reputation on games with rich graphics and often Oriental themes. Since their early days they have moved with the times to more high variance titles, jumping on board the Megaways™ bandwagon too when they signed up to take a license form Big Time Gaming.

In this release from June 2021 they combine a very simple game mechanic – who has ever heard of a one line, one row slot before? – and a an eye-catching bronze reel-set design with a Harlequin theme. With a slightly sinister vibe and a definitely retro feel, the glistening reels with old skool fruity symbols on them at least give this game a classy feel. Despite the lack of features, or even winlines, we were still intrigued enough to want to have a crack at unlocking this game, which is live now at most of the UK’s best slot sites.

What’s important here is the grid of game symbols above the 1 reel – you’ll notice these change in value as Harlecoins land on the reels during the game. And that is the key to getting bigger wins – you’ll be looking to boost those values as much as you can, then try to trigger that free spins round.

RTP and Variance

Our Score 7

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

The minimum stake here is 10p which makes this slot accessible to most players. However, the variance is set at 4/5 which makes it relatively high. At that risk level we advise you to approach Harlecoins with caution – its’ not a game that is going to give up its riches easily and you may experience some frustrating periods of dry spins before hitting the free spins round and decent payouts.

Meanwhile, the RTP is set at 95.71% – a little under average, but nothing to be too concerned about. What is a little disappointing for a game with these credentials is the maximum payout, which is set at only 1,076x – that is poor for a high variance slot and those used to the kind of blockbuster payouts currently being offered in No Limit City and other Big Time Gaming high risk fare might find this unacceptable.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 7

Where HarleCoin becomes interesting is in the paytable which is dynamic as the natural value of all symbols changes throughout your session. There are six icons in total, all in a classic fruit machine style – cherries, stars, lucky sevens, clovers, bells and a wild. You’ll see their base value in the grid above the reels, but watch it change on each spin as you collect HarleCoins.

The basic symbols may be valued at anything from 4x to 125x each, whilst the wild can sub in for any other to form a win as well as being the highest value icon of all.

With one reel in play and (obviously) one payline in play at all times, it’s not hard to keep track of what is going on in the game. To score a win you’ll need to land 3 identical icon on each position, dead center – if they are slightly off then they don’t count. The hit rate here is 1 in 5, which is low, but to be expected for a high variance slot. And of course, the 20% is an average, so the game can vary wildly from this as all high-risk slot fans know! You can find out more in this guide to slots variance.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 6

Harlecoins Feature

Onto the features, and they are lite to say the least. The main aim here is to land Harelcoins to boost the base value of the game icons. Harlecoins will land as an overlay on any of the symbols, including the wilds, on any spin. And they do tend to land quite a lot. Each coin overlay boosts the value of the symbol in the paytable above the reel, and on a win, the value of the symbol in the grid is the one used to calculate the overall value of the payout.

You can boost the paytable significantly in this way though each symbol has an upper limit value, allowing players to enhance the values of cherries, clovers, stars, bells, sevens, or wilds to 20x, 30x, 50x, 100x, 250x, or 500x the wager.

Bonus Round Feature

Boost or Free Spins are triggered by landing 3 bonus icons. That gives you up to 25 free spins – the actual number is arbitrarily chosen. Now, the HarleCoin feature is enhanced too – so any icon that isn’t displaying its max value in the grid will ALWAYS land with a HarleCoin booster on each spin. And, in this case, when a win is generated, the values of icons doesn’t reset – so they remain high throughout the round giving you more chance of scoring bigger wins.

And …

At the end of your bonus round, the icons remain at the value they are until the next win is triggered in the base game.

The Final Verdict

Our Score 6.8

Despite being a simple offering, HarleCoins is an intriguing game. The bronzed graphics and harlequin figures are beautifully-drawn and the basic gameplay focuses the mind on one thing – just landing coins and unlocking the bonus round. Then what becomes clear pretty quickly is that you only really ever hit any decent play in the bonus round – here the coins drop more frequently and a max of 25 free spins is a good haul. However, whilst this slot is fun to play we can’t really see around that very low max payout of just over 1,000x which may be suitable for a low variance slot but for a high risk game with such a low hit rate makes you wonder if it’s worth your time! We will leave you to decide.
