Nitropolis 2 is the second in the three-part series of Nitropolis games from ELK Studios. It was released in April 2021 and is amongst this studio’s best and most entertaining slots. The Nitropolis series has a sci-fi theme and a futuristic setting but it’s also a cartoon slot – the city of the future is inhabited by roving gangs of dogs and cats scrapping for survival.

The game takes place on a 6 reel by 4 row grid with a standard 4,006 paylines potentially expanding as high as 191,102,976 when the Nitro Reels feature is activated. Chaotic, unruly and wild at times, Nitropolis 2 can be an assault on the senses as well as a tough game to get your head around. But above all it’s great fun … as all slots should be.

Design and Artwork

Let’s roll out the cliches now … dystopian, futuristic, cinematic … Nitropolis is one of Elk’s most recognisable games and it quickly invites comparisons with films like Bladerunner or the Matrix. Though of course, it’s just not that serious, so please … we’re talking cats and dogs here! What you have is a grimy urban setting with tower blocks, electronic advertising and neon lights everywhere. Oh, and it’s perma-nightime too of course. Meanwhile, nitro is the fuel that the thug-animals on the reels are hunting down to survive and you can see pipes above the reels pumping the stuff into the game to boost your wins presumably.

The punk-ish style is not dissimilar to Nolimit City slots like San Quentin xWays too, complete with a pumping vaguely nu-metal dance soundtrack.

But however you want to describe it, Nitropolis 2 is an unforgettable audio-visual experience.

First thing to note here is that you will only need to land identical symbols on adjacent reels starting from the left to score wins. This is regardless of the position on the reel. That creates 4,096 paylines (4x4x4x4x4x4).

However, that is just the start. With Nitro Reels the number of paylines can massively increase.

That is likely the reason why the symbol values are so low. For low payers, Jack through to Ace, they are valued at a maximum of 0.4x for six on a line. Mid-range symbols are the wanted posters valued at from 0.2x for three on a line up to 0.5x for six on a line. Premiums are the 4 animals, valued at from 0.7x up to 3x for six on a line.

There are also Wilds that sub in for all other symbols to complete win lines.

The popularity of the original Nitropolis was driven partly by the quality of the narrative, sounds and graphics, but also by its feature-packed gameplay. They don’t hold back in this sequel either. Once again we are presented with a good range of wilds, boosters, expanding reels and free spins. And in the tradition of great high-risk slots, when they all come together, things go off big time!

Here is how it all works:

Nitro Reels

This is ELK’s version of Megaways™ – an expanding reels format in which the number of rows on a reel increases from the base game 4 to as many as 12. How does this happen? Nitro Reels are special reels that sit over 2 rows on any reel. Within a Nitro Reel you may have up to 12 symbols. This can create up to 191,102,976 paylines on a single spin.

This, of course, is a significant boost to the paytable.

Re-Spins

Any symbols or Nitro Reels that form part of a winline are held for a re-spin. This can lead to more wins. If so, the winning symbols and Nitro Reels are held again for another re-spin.

Nitro Booster

This is a new feature to Nitropolis and it’s a big one- it causes random modifiers to trigger on any spin in the base game and free spins round. When active, modifiers are displayed above each reel. There are 7 available.

All Wild – Now, all sticky and new Nitro Reels contain ONLY wilds

Free Spins Feature

Obtaining 3, 4, 5 or 6 Scatters anywhere opens the Free Spins Round and grants 10, 15, 20 and 25 free spins respectively. At the same time any Nitro Reel that is in play becomes Sticky which increases your chances for wins.

It is also possible to re-trigger the free spins round by landing more scatters.

The Final Verdict

Let’s be clear, when you load up Nitropolis 2 tor the first time it can feel like a very confusing game. There is seemingly a lot going on – Boosters at the top of the reels, Nitro Reels randomly showing up and a lot of noise from the soundtrack. So, it’s one you may want to try in demo mode a few times before taking the plunge with real money spins.

However, once you get familiar with the assortment of different features and you know which ones to look out for, it becomes a more exciting gaming experience. At the same time it can be very frustrating too – for a game with so many events on every spin it feels like it lets you down on too many occasions. In testing we never unlocked free spins and rarely got beyond a low value win of less than 2x. That is partly down to the low values on the paytable.

Having said that, with all its interlocking feautres this is a slot that has been designed to deliver some very dramatic wins when the time is right, we just didn’t experience them ourselves. If you are a fan of of frenetic, energetic slots gameplay then you will love Nitropolis 2.
