Maybe that is the thinking behind BTG’s decision to up the madness levels a little further in this latest incarnation – in fact, compared to Diamond Fruits, the original Star Clusters looks tame in comparison.

Let’s start with the maths profile. BTG have built a reputation for creating games with super-tough variance that scare off casual players and get serious slots fans pumped. In this instance though, the volatility is closer to a Medium-High rating, so it could be an entry point for those who find other games from the supplier to be too intimidating.

The RTP of this slot is a standard 96.23%, which is around average for most games. The theme here is a kind-of retro disco one, with a very cool 3-D affect.

The symbols in Diamond Fruits Megaclusters are all fruits painted in bright neon colours. These include plums, lemons, blueberries, pears, watermelons and orange slices. You’ll also find Wild symbols which can substitute for the other symbols and create more potential wins, along with high-paying diamonds.

The fruit symbols can pay from 0.1x stake for 5 matching symbols up to 50x stake for 25 matching symbols on the gaming grid. The payout for hitting 5 matching diamonds is 0.4x stake, while 25 matching diamonds awards 50x stake.

Diamond Fruits is not a feature-packed game. In fact, it really all comes down to Reactions, Wilds, Free Spins and Multipliers. But, the randomness of the triggers, the fourway reactions, and the way wilds explode onto the scene means that there is plenty to enjoy!

Megaclusters and Cascading Reels

You need to find at least 7 symbols in a cluster to achieve a payout in Diamond Fruits, and these can appear in mega 4×4 size. The best regular payouts occur if you find the maximum 25 symbols on the 5×5 grid with up to 50x stake available in the base game.

Fourway Reactions

Whenever you hit a winning combination of symbols, the Fourways Reactions feature is triggered. This means each mega symbol is replaced by 4 smaller symbols and more potential wins. A new cascade of symbols is then triggered to move the small symbols in random directions on the grid and more symbols replace them. This continues until no new winning combinations appear.

Wild Canon Bonus

Once the Fourway Reactions feature has been triggered 3 times, the Wild Canon Bonus is activated. This adds 5 to 15 Wild symbols to the screen to significantly increase your potential winning combinations.

Bonus Spins

Once the Fourway Reactions feature has activated 7 times, the Bonus spins round begins. You’ll receive 8 Bonus Spins initially, along with unlimited Multipliers which keep increasing on each Fourway Reaction – the multiplier starts at a value of 1x.

If you land more than 7 Fourway Reactions, you’ll trigger 3 more Bonus Spins with no limit to how many times this can happen. All this kind of puts us in Bonanza territory and could bring up some seriously fun win sequences for those lucky enough to keep re-triggering.

The Final Verdict

As a special Christmas gift Diamond Fruits is a mixed bag from BTG and one that might just leave your head spinning like the aftermath of the office party!

In essence, this is a simple-looking game with retro appeal and colourful 3D graphics. The 5×5 grid and Megaclusters mechanic add extra interest, but it’s really the Bonus Spins round that you need to trigger if you want to get to the best payouts and this is by far the most exciting part of the game. Until then, you’ll just be dazzled by the interactions of win cascades and the cross-eyed effect of Fourway Reactions and Wild Explosions. After that, the best action is of course in the unlimited Multipliers which can bring you close to that 6,650x stake top payout. It’s just a shame the top reward isn’t higher than this, considering the difficulty of activating it.

In summary, if you strip out some of the crazy animation, this is in fact a simple slot by Big Time Gaming and one that will have a broader appeal than many of its more high risk counterparts. So if you enjoy simple fruity slots, retro styling and a different playing style to the usual reels and paylines, this will be right up your street!
