How We Review Slot Games

Not for the first time, Big Time Gaming are leveraging a license to build games with TV’s popular Who Wants To Be a Millionaire brand. It worked nicely before with their Megaways™ version, but never ones to leave you wanting more, BTG are taking things a step further with this Megapays™ format which means the addition of four progressive jackpots to a classic expanding reels game. Megapays™ is BTG’s own Progressive network, consisting so far of just two slots – this one and Bonanza Megapays™ – but expect it to grow considerably over the coming months and years and make itself a real challenger to big money jackpots like NetEnt’s Mega Fortune and Mega Fortune Dreams.

If you live in the UK then you will probably already know how the WWTBAM gameshow works – contestants answer multiple choice questions, climbing a cash ladder as they do with a £1,000,000 prize at the top. If they stumble along the way they can always fall back on help from the Audience, Phone a Friend, or a 50/50 option. BTG have used the branding of the game nicely in the artwork, and the ‘lifeline’ options come into play in the free spins round.

Other than that, we’re looking at a basic Megaways™ game format – 6 reels with 2 to 7 rows of icons on each, and a horizontal 1 row reel at the top. Style-wise, it looks fantastic, with a golden hotel holding the reels, lush trees, a firework display and even a red carpet. It all spells luxury and opportunity – it’s a bold look and the anticipation levels are high as you load up!

What Our Reviewer Says ...

"Sensational TV gameshow slot with all the best Big Time Gaming characteristics plus a whopping JP to play for!"

Overall Score: 8.6

RTP and Variance

Our Score 8

What is RTP?

RTP (Return to Player) refers to the amount a game will pay out in cash prizes expressed as a percentage of all the money wagered on that game. For example, a 96% RTP means a game will pay out £96 for every £100 wagered. This is an average number and will vary from one session to the next.  Read more here.

What is Variance?

Variance refers to how far a game will deviate from its RTP over time. High variance games deviate a lot and produce uneven win distributions and unexpected windfalls. Low variance games provide a more stable and even distribution of wins. Read more here.

First let’s cover off RTP and make a note that this is a Progressive game and consequently has a lower-than-average Return as some funds are reserved at all times for the jackpot pool. The RTP is set overall to 96.38%, but 9.44% is held back for the progressive pool – so if it feels like you are getting a low return that is because you are! Of course, you may scoop a massive jackpot at any time, so keep that in mind!

The volatility is high in WWTBAM Megapays and the minimum bet is 40p, so overall it is a game that is most suited to players who enjoy risk. In other words, those with smaller budget might find the ups and downs too aggressive for a fun gaming session.

The Megaways™ engine meanst that you get a variable number of win ways, starting at 324 and going up to a max of 117,649 when all six reels are fully expanded. The top payout is 72,310x your bet. The game has 4 Progressive Jackpots from the MegaPays feature, seeded at up to £300,000, which can be triggered at random, so everyone has a chance of hitting the big money.

Symbols and Paytable

Our Score 8

The symbols in Who Wants to be a Millionaire Megapays include a glittering diamond, rubies, emeralds and sapphires, along with high cards. The diamond is the highest-paying symbol awarding 50 x stake for 6 of a kind, followed by the other gemstones which pay from 2x to 7.5x stake for 6 matches. The high cards from 9 through to Ace pay the lower rewards.

Multi-coloured Wild symbols also appear on the horizontal bonus reel. These stand in for the other symbols in the game to create more potential winning combinations.

Features and Gameplay

Our Score 9

There’s lots of extra features, as you would expect from a BTG slot – Win Cascades and Multipliers are key to scoring big wins. Here’s how it all fits together.

Reactions

The Reactions in this slot work in the same way as Cascading Reels. Whenever a win occurs, the winning symbols disappear to be replaced by new symbols. Reactions keep occurring until no new winning symbols appear, giving you multiple winning chances on every spin.

Free Spins

By landing 3 or more Millionaire Scatters you will earn 8 Free Spins and start the Hot Seat Free Spins Gamble to see if you can earn more. Select A, B, C or D and hit ‘Final Answer’. Correct guesses push you up higher up the ladder, but wrong guesses drop you down a rung, losing your Free Spins. The 2nd and 7th rungs are safety steps that guarantee 10 or 20 Free Spins. You can then take a free gamble.

Lifelines

During your gamble, you get 3 lifelines just like in the TV quiz show. You can Phone a Friend to highlight the most likely answer, Ask the Audience to display the odds or take 50/50 to remove 2 incorrect answers. However, you don’t have to gamble – simply press Collect to take your Free spins as they stand.

During Free Spins, Multipliers are added to every Reaction without limit. Scatters also appear on the Bonus Reel and hitting 3 or 4 will award an extra 10 or 20 Free Spins.

Win Multiplier

In true Megaways™ style, a win multiplier is used to boost your wins. It starts at 1x at the start of the round and increases by 1x with every Reaction or Cascade. At the same time its also possible to earn extra spins with when you land more scatters – 3 or 4 scatters on one spin gets you 4 or 8 extra spins.

Megapays Progressive Jackpots

A Megapays jackpot prize can trigger randomly on any spin and transport you to a sunny new screen. One symbol is chosen as the Megapays symbol and you need to collect these during the round. Collecting 4 Megapays symbols awards one of 4 Jackpots:

4-7 Megapays symbols awards the Mini Jackpot – seeded with £100

8-11 Megapays symbols awards the Midi Jackpot – seeded with £1,500

12-14 Megapays symbols awards the Major Jackpot – seeded with £20,000

15+ Megapays symbols awards the Mega Jackpot – seeded with £300,000

The Final Verdict

Who Wants to be a Millionaire Megapays is opulent in design, while the gameplay is exciting for any slots fan keen on TV themes. It’s super volatile though and the 40p minimum bet means casual slotters are not the target audience. However, it’s still good for a few spins as it’s great to see some of the classic quiz show touches, such as Phone a Friend and Ask the Audience, being drawn into the game. The Free Spins and Multipliers add extra interest, however it’s the Megapays feature we’re all waiting for – and the fact this can be triggered at random makes this loaded with anticipation! If you love the quiz show and can handle the risk, give this volatile beast a spin at any of the latest UK slot sites.
