Mega Don is a high variance shark-themed slot from Play n Go. It has 5 reels and a Win Ways pay model that creates 1,024 paylines on any spin. The gameplay is simple. In the base game Snack Time feature low value symbols are upgraded to premium sharks at random to give you more chance of hitting big wins. Then in the bonus round, up to six low value symbols are upgraded throughout and up to 21 spins are awarded that can produce relentless runs of big wins.

Mega Don is very easy to play. It has a 10,000x top win and spins start at just 10p.

Mega Don has been well-produced, a little slicker than another shark-themed slot that arrived around the same time – iSoftBet’s Ocean Hunter. This game gives off a mix of cartoon fun and broody, sinister atmosphere as blood fills the water for the Snack Time feature whilst the apex premium symbol, the Mega Don, looks suitably terrifying with rows of razor-sharp smiling teeth. Looking down from above, the reel set sits against the backdrop of a turquoise ocean with animations of sharks circling at all times. And there is a real sense of the food chain about this – those smaller fish aren’t going to last long and the rule of the Mega Don slot is to eat or be eaten.

Mega Don is a 5 reel and 4 row slot and it utilises a Win Ways model in which wins are paid out for 3 or more identical symbols landing on adjacent reels from left to right, regardless of their row position.

This gives you 1,024 paylines in total (4x4x4x4x4).

The paytable doesn’t show massive value, even at the top end, but that is offset by symbol upgrades, a key part of the gameplay, which can increase your chances of completing premium win lines.

Low payers are the six small fish which pay between 0.4 and 1x the bet. Premiums are three big sharks, including Mega Don, which pay 2-4 times the bet.

There is also a jaw-patterned wild symbol which can sub in for all other symbols – except the scatter – to complete winlines.

In the base game you need to look out for the random Snack Time feature. In this, up to 3 random small fish will upgrade to premium Sharks with higher value. In the animation, they land then transform.

Also keep your eyes on the reels for Scatters – that look like Shark Warning signs. Three or more of these on one spin will set up the main event, Shark Feast. This is a mix of free spins and upgrading symbols, with bigger awards for more scatters.

  • 3 scatters – 6 free spins plus one upgrade symbol.
  • 4 scatters – 9 free spins plus two upgrade symbols.
  • 5 scatters – 12 free spins plus three upgrades.

It sounds basic, but it gives you the chance to start accumulating some nice win potential. Once again, you see them land before they transform into the upgrade.

The good part is, you can re-trigger this bonus to transform more symbols. That works like this:

  • 3 more scatters will give an extra three free spins plus one extra upgrade symbol.
  • 4 more scatters will give an extra six free spins plus two extra upgrade symbols.
  • 5 more scatters will give an extra nine free spins plus three extra upgrade symbols.

The important point here is that it is possible, on a good run, to transform ALL SIX low value symbols into premiums, giving you the maximum chance to hit that 10,000x top payout.

The Final Verdict

Mega Don is an eye catching slot thanks to its prehistoric front man, but as a game its mix of high variance maths model and limited features means it is a tough play. The game will suit those who like high risk slots and aren’t bothered about unlocking many base game features but would rather just keep spinning until the bonus round breaks and you have a chance of a run for glory. And with a 10,000x top win there is no question that big payoffs are possible.

For those who are looking for that type of experience, there will be a fun slot to play. The visuals and sounds are very good – in particular I loved the Mega Don animations and the Snack Time blood-red waters. But as with all Play n Go slots, you should be wary of the RTP and check before you spin to be sure you are playing at one of the top settings.
